What is sleep apnea?
People with sleep apnea stop breathing for 10 to 30 seconds at a time while they are sleeping. These short stops in breathing can happen up to 400 times every night! If you have sleep apnea, the periods of not breathing may make you wake up from deep sleep. If you are waking up all night long, you aren't getting enough rest from your sleep. There are two kinds of sleep apnea: obstructive apnea and central apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type. Nine out of 10 people with sleep apnea have this type of apnea. If you have obstructive apnea, something is blocking the passage or windpipe (called the trachea) that brings air into your body. You keep trying to breathe, but you can't get enough air because of the blockage. Your windpipe might be blocked by your tongue, tonsils or uvula (the little piece of flesh that hangs down in the back of your throat). It might also be blocked by a large amount of fatty tissue in the throat or even by relaxed throat muscles. Central sleep apnea is rare. This type is called central apnea because it is related to the function of the central nervous system. If you have this type of apnea, the muscles you use to breathe don't get the "go-ahead" signal from your brain. Either the brain doesn't send the signal, or the signal gets interrupted.

What is sleep apnea?
In some people, the windpipe that brings air into the body is blocked during sleep. This keeps the lungs from getting enough air. This is called obstructive sleep apnea. People who have sleep apnea stop breathing for 10 to 30 seconds at a time while they are sleeping. These stops can happen up to 400 times every night. The consequences of these disturbances can be serious and sometimes life-threatening. Return to top
What is a CPAP device?
One way to treat people who have sleep apnea is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device. A CPAP device has a mask, tubes and a fan. It uses air pressure to push your tongue forward and open your throat. This allows air to pass through your throat. It reduces snoring and prevents apnea disturbances. You should put your CPAP device on whenever you sleep, even for naps. A CPAP device does not cure sleep apnea. But, when you use the device correctly, your sleep problems should get much better.

  • Who the heck are you?
My name is Doug Linder. I'm just some guy with apnoea. It's easier to tell you what I am not:
    • Most importantly, I am NOT a doctor. I do not keep lists of doctors, specialists, equipment companys, or anything like that. I can't recommend doctors or brands of CPAP machines. Sorry. I don't have a folderful of secret "cures" for apnoea that I keep away from everyone else just out of spite. The minute I hear of a new potential treatment, I put it up here. I'm not highly connected to the field of sleep medicine. Yes, I have met a few nice folks in the industry, and some of them are indeed doctors. But they don't give free, anonymous, undiagnosed medical advice over the internet, either.

    Overview of Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Approximately 30 million Americans are victims of a sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea . Many millions more are predisposed and have a high risk of developing the illness. If you are an adult male, the odds are about 50/50 that your breathing is not normal when you are sleeping. It is imperative that anyone who might have this problem or is predisposed, or knows someone they care about who has the problem, should have the clearest possible understanding about it.
We have dedicated this section of the web site to a crystal clear and detailed description of all aspects of obstructive sleep apnea. The section begins with an overview which will introduce the reader to this important sleep disorder. During the next several weeks we will be providing you with a more in-depth understanding of obstructive sleep apnea. Please check back to this section to view upcoming segments.

The most common kind of sleep apnea is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome. Sleep apnea means "cessation of breath." It is characterized by repetitive episodes of upper airway obstruction that occur during sleep, usually associated with a reduction in blood oxygen saturation. In other words, the airway becomes obstructed at several possible sites. The upper airway can be obstructed by excess tissue in the airway, large tonsils, a large tongue and usually includes the airway muscles relaxing and collapsing when asleep. Another site of obstruction can be the nasal passages. Sometimes the structure of the jaw and airway can be a factor in sleep apnea. What are the symptoms?
    • excessive daytime sleepiness
    • frequent episodes of obstructed breathing during sleep. (The patient may be unaware of this symptom usually the bed partner is extremely aware of this).
    Associated features may include:
    • loud snoring
    • morning headaches
    • unrefreshing sleep
    • a dry mouth upon awakening

See also sleep disorders Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top In normal conditions, the muscles of the upper part of the throat keep this passage open to allow air to flow into the lungs. These muscles usually relax during sleep, but the passage remains open enough to permit the flow of air. Some individuals have a narrower passage, and during sleep, relaxation of these muscles causes the passage to close, and air cannot get into the lungs. Loud snoring and labored breathing occur. When complete blockage of the airway occurs, air cannot reach the lungs. For reasons that are still unclear, in deep sleep, breathing can stop for a period of time (often more than 10 seconds). These periods of lack of breathing, or apneas, are followed by sudden attempts to breathe. These attempts are accompanied by a change to a lighter stage of sleep. The result is fragmented sleep that is not restful, leading to excessive daytime

I personally do NOT recommend the use of any home video course. Regular consultation with a qualified practitioner is vital for your successful recovery because the breathing exercises are tailored to each individual. I have recently incorporated the discipline of Pilates with my studies of Buteyko and have developed a unique stretch/breathing program. I call this new method, Buteykolates.
