Apache Tribe
by Todd Underwood The word "apache" comes from the Yuma word for "fighting-men" and from the Zuni word meaning "enemy." The Apache tribe consists of six subtribes: the Western Apache, Chiricahua, Mescalero, Jicarilla, Lipan and Kiowa. Each subtribe is from a different geographial region. It is possible, due to their nomadic nature, that several names were used to identify the same tribe. The Apaches are commonly known for their incredible endurance and warfare skills. First arriving in the Southwest sometime between A.D.1000 and 1400, the Apaches carved out a home on the south side of the Rocky mountains. As early as 1540, the Apaches confronted Coronado in eastern New Mexico and were called "vaqueros." By the 1600's, they were also living in Arizona. Between 1656 and 1675, the Apaches continuously raided Spanish Settlers and Pueblo Indians in what is now known as New Mexico. In 1680, their population was approximately 5000. In 1692, the Spaniards reconquered New Mexico and the Apaches were starting to make enemies. In 1723 the Comanche defeated the

Native North Americans, whose language is thought to form a branch of the Aztec-Tanoan linguistic stock. The Kiowa, a nomadic people of the Plains area, had several distinctive traits, including a pictographic calendar and the worship of a stone image, the taimay. Kiowa Apache, a small group of North American Native Americans traditionally associated with the Kiowa from the earliest times, now live with them on their reservation. The Kiowa Apache retain their own language. See R. H. Lowie, Societies of the Kiowa (1916); A. L. Marriott, Kiowa Years (1968); M. P. Mayhall, The Kiowas (rev. ed. 1972). • Mohawk (Iroquois)
The Iroquois League, or Five Nations of the Iroquois, was the most powerful Indian military alliance in the eastern part of North America and probably the most successful alliance of any kind between so many important tribes. There were three principal clans - deer, turtle and wolf - existing within the five nations, and this was probably an important unifying factor in the league. The league was formed in the late sixteenth century at which time the five nations had a combined population of 7000.
    • Mohican (Mohegan) and/or Mahican
What a confusion of facts. After reading through several texts and visiting many sites on the web, it has become clear as mud that everyone has a differing opinion about the relationships between these three tribes. We will therefore include them all on one page and maybe through your wanderings, you will discover the truth. If you do, please let us in on it.
    • Creek
The Creek were originally one of the dominant tribes in the mid-south and later became known as one of the Five Civilized Tribes. They were known in their own language as Muskoke or Muskoge, by the Shawnee as Humaskogi, by the Delaware as Masquachki and by the British as the Ochese Creek Indians, hence the present name. Their name has been adapted for that of their linguistic group and for Muskogee, Oklahoma, which was a major city of the Creek Nation in Indian territory.

Indianapolis, Indiana: The NARSI ) offers the best youth recreation and sport directors and coaches training programs in America. The emphasis is on training adults to work with children ages 5 - 14 and the overall well-being of these youths. The emotional, physical, spiritual, and cultural development of the children is of prime concern. The classes are recommended for personnel of recreation, youth, drug elimination, housing, health, wellness, and health departments. Tribal Council Members who oversee these departments are encouraged to participate.
The origin of NARSI is rooted in the recreation directors education conference programs planned and produced by Judith G. Shepherd in Indianapolis in 1994 and 1995. The ongoing development is due to the popularity and growth of those conferences.
Native American Youth Recreation and Sport Administration NAYRSA ) is appropriate for recreation administrators and directors, assistant directors, and financial officers of recreation departments. The session of Level I is a full eight hours of training. The fee includes an inclusive guide, textbooks, and meals. This is a program which gives details on the "how-tos" and the "whys" of each step necessary in the development and advancement of an excellent recreation department. To be able to direct a recreation program, the administrator needs to know the details of the youth coach program of study, therefore

Listing of Federally Recognized Tribes Tribal Entities List as of Dec. 30, 1998 Indian Tribe Names and Their Meanings Tribal Profiles ... Geographical Index to the Tribes of the United States and Canada WARNING !!: Internet fraud. Beware that there is a tremendous amount of fraud and misrepresentation which exists on the East Coast (and on the Net) for "Indian" events and products. This fraud represents millions of dollars in revenue being deprived of our legitimate tribal Indian populations. There also exists, on the Internet and in reality, groups that give the appearance of being actual tribes, nations or having affiliation with actual tribes and nations. In most cases their purposes are not honestly represented and their existence creates enmity with the tribes and nations which they claim to represent or from which they claim to be descended. I have no way of knowing which is acceptable or legitimate from the state point of the NA Indian. Use caution when buying goods that claim they are "authentic".

United States v. White Mountain Apache Tribe , No. 01-1067; United States v. Navajo Nation , No. 01-1375
Another legal doubleheader took place December 2, 2002, when the Court heard back-to-back arguments in two important Native American Indian rights cases that ask the Court to clarify the "trust relationship" between Native American tribes and the federal government. In one case, the United States v. White Mountain Apache Tribe , No. 01-1067, the tribe seeks damages for the U.S. failure to protect and preserve Fort Apache. In the other, United States v. Navajo Nation , No. 01-1375, the Navajo Nation seeks damages for the government's mismanagement of a tribal mineral lease. To say that the federal government has a "trust" responsibility to Native American tribes means that it has a legal obligation to act in the tribes' best interests with respect to tribal funds and resources. While this relationship between the federal government and Native American tribes has been recognized in treaties and statutes, the precise remedy available in the event the government breaches this duty has been much less clear.

He spoke for almost an hour on his future plans for increasing every Native American's present standard of living. He referred to his career as Governor of Texas, how he had signed "YES" 1,237 times - for every Indian issue that came to his desk for approval.
