Effective Treatment 2005
Nothing for Sale! Welcome and Enjoy!

September 2005
Welcome to my website! My name is Chad Miller. Shy kid and Social Anxiety Disorder (formerly called Social Phobia) since teens, my Social Anxiety became pretty severe by late high school. At 26 I finally found out the name "Social Phobia" and that it was medically treatable. Substantial improvement in the quality of life is within the reach of most all with untreated Social Anxiety Disorder. Current research is being done to promote earlier diagnosis and treatment (onset in the childhood or teenage years is common).
A Recent Abstract on Social Anxiety Disorder:
Journal of Clinical Psychiatry 2001;62 Suppl 12:24-9
Comorbidity, Neurobiology, and Pharmacotherapy of Social Anxiety Disorder.
Pollack MH, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston 02114
(End of abstract)
Symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder: Social Anxiety Disorder is a persistent fear of one or more situations in which the person is exposed to possible scrutiny by others and fears that he or she may do something or act in a way that will be humiliating or embarrassing. It exceeds normal "shyness" when it leads to excessive social avoidance and substantial social or occupational impairment. Feared activities may include most any type of social interaction, especially small groups, dating, parties, talking to strangers, restaurants, etc. Physical symptoms include "mind going blank", fast heartbeat, blushing, stomach ache. Cognitive distortions are a hallmark, and learned about in CBT. Thoughts are often self-defeating and inaccurate.

127. Separation Anxiety Disorder
Visit this awardwinning site for a clear definition of separation anxiety inchildren in adolescents, it s symptoms, and the most effective treatments.
http://www.childanxiety.net/Separation_Anxiety.htm
Separation Anxiety Disorder:
Separation anxiety disorder refers typically to younger children who are extremely unwilling to separate from major attachment figures (e.g., parents grandparents, older siblings) or from home (DSM-IV 1994). The threat of having to separate from a caregiver often results in anxiety as well, such as when parents plan to go out for the evening and leave the child with a sitter. Primary Symptoms:
Excessive worry about potential harm toward oneself (e.g., getting sick at school) or one’s primary caregivers (e.g., being in a car accident). The child may also avoid activities that may result in separation from parents. Nightmares and somatic complaints are common, inducing trembling, headaches, stomachaches, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and sweating. Treatment:

HOME FAQ's DIRECTIONS THE ANXIETY DISORDERS CLINIC Founded in 1982, the Anxiety Disorders Clinic was the first in the nation devoted to research and treatment of anxiety problems. Although the idea that anxiety could take the form of specific disorders had been increasingly recognized, little systematic information about these disorders was available at the time. The clinic has been a driving force behind the recent advances in the recognition, understanding, and/or treatment of anxiety disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and others. Our counterpart Hispanic Clinic offers research treatment in Spanish and is a valuable asset in the community. Integrating Medication and Psychotherapy Treatments While the Anxiety Disorders Clinic has been very much a part of the biological revolution that has transformed psychiatry, it has also taken a leading role in comparing and combining medication with cognitive behavioral treatments that have recently been shown to benefit anxiety disorders. Through collaborations with developers of innovative behavioral approaches in a Philadelphia research clinic, the Anxiety Disorders Clinic has developed new methods for the comparison of medication and behavioral therapy treatments for social phobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder. After rigorous scrutiny at academic centers of differing "ideological" bents, these collaborations have enhanced the acceptance of the new and effective treatments and have become a model for the profession.

Next Social Phobia: The Largest Anxiety Disorder Social Phobia (social anxiety disorder) is defined as the fear (anxiety) of being judged, criticized, and evaluated by other people. This fear is recognized as irrational by the individual; nevertheless, the fear of judgment in social situations persists. People who have social phobia usually find it difficult to be introduced to other people ("I wonder what they're thinking about me; I'll bet they don't like me"), attracting attention to the self or being the center of attention, being watched while doing something ("They don't like what I'm doing; I must be making a fool of myself"), and feeling insecure and self-conscious in most public settings. Life is difficult for the person with social phobia because they feel they do not fit in with every one else. Something is wrong with them.

AN OVERVIEW OF ANXIETY DISORDERS
Jack D. Maser, Ph.D.
National Institute of Mental Health
Fear and anxiety are a normal part of life, even adaptive in many conditions. Who among us has not studied for a test without some anxiety and scored better for it? Who has not walked down a dark street in a high crime district without mounting fear? Normal anxiety keeps us alert: it makes us question whether we really have to walk down that street after all. Mental health professionals are not concerned with normal anxiety. Rather, they attend to fear and anxiety that has somehow gone awry; that inexplicably reaches overwhelming levels; that dramatically reduces or eliminates productivity and significantly intrudes on an individual's quality of life; and for which friends, family and even the patient can find no obvious cause. Clinicians recognize about 12 relatively distinct subtypes of anxiety disorder: Panic Disorder, with and without Agoraphobia; Agoraphobia Without a History of Panic Disorder; Specific Phobia; Social Phobia; Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder; Post-traumatic Stress Disorder; Acute Stress Disorder; Generalized Anxiety Disorder; Anxiety Disorder Due to a General Medical Condition; Substance-Induced Anxiety Disorder; and Anxiety Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.
