Contact The strategy of marketing the illness before selling the drug has become a trend in the post-Prozac era, says Dr. Leon Mosher , former chief of the Center for Studies of Schizophrenia at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Few people had heard of social anxiety disorder before the spring of 2001. According to a survey in 1989, fewer than 1.2 percent of the population had been diagnosed with it. But by the spring of 2001, the media were filled with news items urging people to watch for symptoms of irritability, fatigue, sweating and muscle tension. Subsequent medical reports described generalized anxiety disorder, or GAD, as leaving its victims paralyzed with irrational fears. The timing of the media frenzy was no accident. On April 16, 2001, the FDA approved the antidepressant Paxil for the treatment of GAD.

ANXIETY DISORDERS
Prevalence:
In the U.S. , anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problem for women and are the second most common mental health problem for men. In any given year, about 10 percent of the U.S. population suffers from an anxiety disorders. Dr. Edmond Bourne in The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook (1995) states that anxiety disorders result from cumulative stress over time. He points out that persons living in the U.S. are presently experiencing more stress than they ever have before. The high levels of stress he attributes to the unprecedented rapid pace of change in our society and because our society lacks consistent, universal values and norms. The recent increased threat of terrorist attack is another contributing factor to the high rate of anxiety disorders in the U.S. He believes that anxiety disorders are the result of our inability to cope with all the stress we experience. What is anxiety, and what are Anxiety Disorders? Anxiety is usually a reaction to a vague, distant or even undetermined danger. Anxiety is an inevitable aspect of everyday life and can serve as a motivator. According to Dr. Bourne, anxiety disorders differ from anxiety in the following respects: (a) they are more intense, (b) they last longer, and (c) they usually produce phobias which interfere with your life.

Anxiety Disorders in Children and Adolescents
What are anxiety disorders? Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in America; they affect as many as one in 10 young people. Unfortunately, these disorders are often difficult to recognize, and many who suffer from them are either too ashamed to seek help or they fail to realize that these disorders can be treated effectively. What are the most common anxiety disorders?
  • Panic Disorder Characterized by panic attacks, panic disorder results in sudden feelings of terror that strike repeatedly and without warning. Physical symptoms include chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, feelings of unreality, and fear of dying. Children and adolescents with this disorder may experience unrealistic worry, self- consciousness, and tension. Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD) Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Persistent symptoms of this disorder occur after experiencing a trauma such as abuse, natural disasters, or extreme violence. Symptoms include nightmares; flashbacks; the numbing of emotions; depression; feeling angry, irritable, and distracted; and being easily startled. Phobias Generalized Anxiety Disorder Chronic, exaggerated worry about everyday, routine life events and activities that lasts at least six months is indicative of generalized anxiety disorder. Children and adolescents with this disorder usually anticipate the worst and often complain of fatigue, tension, headaches, and nausea.

What is
Generalized Anxiety Disorder? "I just dread being alone at night. I don’t know why, but I do......" "My thoughts won’t shut off. They’re constantly running, making me worry, worry, worry......" "Will I ever be my old self again?" "I can’t remember ever feeling relaxed and calm....What would that be like?" "I’m always on edge....." "I hate having to go to work anymore. I haven’t always been this way....." Generalized anxiety disorder is a relatively common anxiety problem, affecting 3-4% of the population, that turns daily life into a state of worry, anxiety, and fear. Excessive thinking and dwelling on the "what ifs" characterizes this anxiety disorder. As a result, the person feels there’s no way out of the vicious cycle of anxiety and worry, and then becomes depressed about life and the state of anxiety they find themselves in. Generalized anxiety usually does not cause people to avoid situations, and there isn’t an element of a "panic attack" involved in the prognosis, either. It’s the

      Anxiety Disorders
Phobias E veryone feels anxious or uneasy from time to time. Your first day on a new job, planning for a long trip, going to the dentist....your palms sweat, you feel shaky, your heart pounds. Some anxiety helps to keep you focused on the job at hand. However, when your anxiety is so serious that it interferes with your work, leads you to avoid certain situations or keeps you from enjoying life, you may be suffering from a form of the most common type of mental disorder, an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are not just a case of "nerves." You can’t overcome an anxiety disorder just through willpower, nor can the symptoms be ignored or wished away. These disorders cause you to feel anxious most of the time, making some everyday situations so uncomfortable that you may avoid them entirely. Or, you may experience occasional instances of anxiety that are so terrifying and intense that you may be immobilized with fear. Although these conditions can be very frightening and disabling, they are also very treatable. It is important to recognize the symptoms and seek help.

Anxiety disorders, however, are illnesses that cause people to feel frightened, distressed and uneasy for no apparent reason. Left untreated, these disorders can dramatically reduce productivity and significantly diminish an individual's quality of life. How Common Are Anxiety Disorders? Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in America; more than 19 million are affected by these debilitating illnesses each year. Anxiety disorders cost the U.S. $46.6 billion in 1990 in direct and indirect costs, nearly one-third of the nation's total mental health bill of $148 billion. What Are the Different Kinds of Anxiety Disorders? Panic Disorder -Characterized by panic attacks, sudden feelings of terror that strike repeatedly and without warning. Physical symptoms include chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, feelings of unreality, and fear of dying.
