Introduction Anxiety is a normal, natural emotion experienced by most human beings. However, a youngster with an Anxiety Disorder experiences anxiety more strongly and more readily than others, and has excessive worry to a degree that interferes with the rest of his or her life. The anxiety can be about separation, something catastrophic happening, being judged, or it can be experienced in social situations. Children and adolescents can also have symptoms typical of adult panic attacks. Anxiety Disorders are most likely caused by a combination of biological and situational factors. Parents and children can be optimistic since Anxiety Disorders are among the most readily and effectively treated mental disorders with cognitive behavioral therapy and/or medication. Back to top.

Anxiety Disorders Panic Disorder
Panic Disorder is characterized by sudden, intense episodes of fear and anxiety that occur often and without warning. During a panic attack, physical symptoms such as shortness of breath, racing heart, dizziness, or feeling flushed typically occur. Feelings of unreality, and fear of fainting, losing control, or dying are also common during panic episodes. People who suffer from Panic Disorder may become fearful of having panic attacks, and may begin to avoid public situations, such as parties, classrooms or social gatherings. College students are in a high risk age group for Panic Disorder, as it most frequently is diagnosed during young adulthood.

Introduction
Anxiety disorders are serious medical illnesses that affect approximately 19 million American adults. These disorders fill people's lives with overwhelming anxiety and fear. Unlike the relatively mild, brief anxiety caused by a stressful event such as a business presentation or a first date, anxiety disorders are chronic, relentless, and can grow progressively worse if not treated. Effective treatments for anxiety disorders are available, and research is yielding new, improved therapies that can help most people with anxiety disorders lead productive, fulfilling lives. If you think you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek information and treatment. This brochure will
