According to the most recent data, the lifetime prevalence for anxiety disorders as a whole in adults is about 25%; the frequency in children is unknown, but felt to be significantly underreported and under-diagnosed. More specifically Social Anxiety Disorder has a lifetime risk of 17%, while Panic Disorder occurs in approximately 1-3% of the adult population. Symptoms of Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety is a subjective sense of worry, apprehension, fear and distress. Often it is normal to have these sensations on occasion, and so it is important to distinguish between normal levels of anxiety and unhealthy or pathologic levels of anxiety. The subjective experience of anxiety typically has two components: physical sensations (e.g., headache, nausea, sweating) and the emotions of nervousness and fear. Anxiety disorders, when severe, can affect a child's thinking, decision-making ability, perceptions of the environment, learning and concentration. It raises blood pressure and heart rate, and can cause a multitude of bodily complaints, such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, ulcers, diarrhea, tingling, weakness, and shortness of breath, among other things.

A nxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder and social phobia, are the most prevalent psychiatric disorders in the United States, and patients with these disorders are more likely to seek treatment from a primary care physician than from a psychiatrist. Patients with anxiety disorders are more likely than other patients to make frequent medical appointments, to undergo extensive diagnostic testing, to report their health as poor and to smoke cigarettes and abuse other substances. Anxiety disorders, particularly panic disorder, occur more frequently in patients with chronic medical illnesses (e.g., hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes) than in the general population.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder By: Michael Appleman, M.S. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is when persistent worry and anxiety about your health, work, money or family last for at least six months, even when there are no signs of trouble in your life. Doctors have found that constant and uncontrollable worry and anxiety may be due to a GAD. GAD is a long-term illness that can last for many years before it is even diagnosed and treated. This is why many people with GAD believe their anxiousness is purely a part of their personality. All of us must realize that GAD is an illness that can and will interfere with our every day life and is connected with physical symptoms. Major Symptoms of GAD The major symptoms of GAD contain worry, anxiety and tension. If you think you might have GAD, ask yourself the following questions: 1. Do I worry excessively about minor issues? 2. Am I nervous most of the time? 3. Am I stressed most days? If you answered yes to all three questions, may mean that you are suffering from GAD. You should consult your doctor for the proper diagnosis. Other Symptoms of GAD *Restlessness *Exhausting Easily *Struggle Concentrating *Muscle Tension *Uneasy Sleep Due to these symptoms being physical in nature, the emotional aspects of GAD can go unnoticed by your doctor. As a result, many people visit their doctor several times because of these physical symptoms before GAD is diagnosed and treated. In order to help the doctor become more aware of your problem and make the correct diagnosis, talk to him/her about all your symptoms including any constant worries that you may have.

That situation is beginning to change, however, because recent research has shown that the disorder is highly prevalent, chronic in its untreated course, often associated with comorbid mental and substance-related problems, and capable of disabling those who have it. We now know more about recognizing social phobia and the types of interventions to which it is responsive. Everybody knows what it's like to feel anxiousthe butterflies in your stomach before a first date, the tension you feel when your boss is angry, the way your heart pounds if you're in danger. Anxiety rouses you to action. It gears you up to face a threatening situation. It makes you study harder for that exam, and keeps you on your toes when you're making a speech. In general, it helps you cope. But if you have an anxiety disorder, this normally helpful emotion can do just the oppositeit can keep you from coping and can disrupt your daily life. Anxiety disorders aren't just a case of "nerves." They are illnesses, often related to the biological makeup and life experiences of the individual, and they frequently run in families. There are several types of anxiety disorders, each with its own distinct features. An anxiety disorder may make you feel anxious most of the time, without any apparent reason. Or the anxious feelings may be so uncomfortable that to avoid them you may stop some everyday activities. Or you may have occasional bouts of anxiety so intense they terrify and immobilize you.

Broadband brings the world right to your laptop or your handheld. With it comes information, and along with it comes desire to stay connected, and on top of everything. Welcome to Internet Anxiety Disorder, a malaise that is more problematic than that blog fatigue. A decade later, voice having been replaced by more instantaneous forms of communications , broadband enabled of course, I find myself suffering from a new more intense form of anxiety which I call the Internet anxiety disorder. Let me elaborate. By the time I get to office, I feel I am in data smog. As the day progresses, the emails pile-up, many unanswered for days because the feeling of being overwhelmed. The damn posts keep rising and rising, hitting 2000. Phone calls with sources, only add to the content flowing into the brain. I find myself falling behind on answering emails, reading stuff and even just contemplating. Phone calls, are shorter, terse and often remiss of any politeness. Welcome to the age of info-clutter!

      Anxiety Disorders
The anxiety disorders are the most common, or frequently occurring, mental disorders. They encompass a group of conditions that share extreme or pathological anxiety as the principal disturbance of mood or emotional tone. Anxiety, which may be understood as the pathological counterpart of normal fear, is manifest by disturbances of mood, as well as of thinking, behavior, and physiological activity.
      Types of Anxiety Disorders
The anxiety disorders include panic disorder (with and without a history of agoraphobia), agoraphobia (with and without a history of panic disorder), generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, acute stress disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (DSM-IV). In addition, there are adjustment disorders with anxious features, anxiety disorders due to general medical conditions, substance-induced anxiety disorders, and the residual category of anxiety disorder not otherwise specified (DSM-IV). Panic attacks also are not limited to panic disorder. They commonly occur in the course of social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, and major depressive disorder (DSM-IV).

    Anxiety Conditions
Millions of Canadians will develop an overwhelming anxiety condition in their lifetime. Over 12% of Canadians will be affected, causing mild to severe impairment. Anxiety conditions include: generalized anxiety condition (disorder); persistent panic (panic disorder); agoraphobia with panic; post traumatic stress (disorder); obsessive compulsive disorder; specific phobias; social anxiety; and childhood anxieties such as separation anxiety. If you live with an anxiety condition you are not alone. Anxiety conditions are prevalent and are experienced by people of all ages and all social, economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.  These people may be members of your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, or people you pass by on the street. All research points to the fact that anxiety conditions can be managed, and that people with anxiety conditions can live healthy, happy lives. It starts with you!  Your awareness and acceptance of anyone living with an anxiety condition will help remove the barriers that cause people to feel ashamed of their anxiety and not want to openly discuss their experiences or seek help. The more we talk about anxiety conditions and open ourselves to new information the more likely people will seek appropriate treatment, know how to talk about their anxiety with health professionals, and realize that it is O.K. to live with an anxiety condition. Let your friends and neighbors know that you are open to discussing these concerns. Speak out to make sure that the proper diagnosis and treatment of serious anxiety related issues are seen as important in your community. We’re here to help.
