Photography by Brent Humphreys This is perfect soil for this kind of work,” says Walter Tschinkel, as sweat runs down his face. “You can dig a six-foot hole in an hour here.” His voice is muffled because that’s just what he has done—and then some. He’s crouched in the bottom of an eight-foot-deep hole in the ground, in a hot, dry, open field between the Tallahassee, Florida, airport and a sewage-treatment plant. Clay-infused sand comes flying out of the hole as he shovels. Tschinkel, 62, rests a moment, then picks up a trowel and pokes sand away from one wall of the pit. He glances up. “I think we can start taking it out,” he says. As he prods with the trowel tip, a fantastic sculpture begins to emerge from the earth. He scrapes away more sand, revealing tubes and elliptical lobes that a moment ago were completely buried. The thing is so delicate that, as Tschinkel and his graduate students remove it from the ground, it breaks into dozens of pieces. An ant nest, perfectly cast in three dimensions, it will be reassembled later in the laboratory. Tschinkel has spent this fine April morning mixing dental plaster to the consistency of eggnog, adding glass fibers, propping a cupped leaf against the nest’s entrance as a funnel, pouring the plaster, and letting it set. That’s when he dug the pit beside the nest and liberated the cast.

Ant Control System
The AntPro Ant Control System, kills and destroys entire ant colonies, not just individual foraging ants. Its patented round-the-clock, feed-on-demand, liquid bait delivery capability is proven effective against carpenter ants, imported fire ants, Argentine ants, white footed ants, crazy ants, as well as, numerous other ant and insect species. The most important fact to keep in mind is that AntPro accomplishes its task without broadcasting pesticides that sacrifice your health and our environment.
AntPro Ant Bait Dispenser
AntPro
is a high-volume, weather-tolerant, liquid ant bait dispenser designed to deliver low-toxic ant bait solutions which are a combination of insect attractant and slow acting toxicant.
The AntPro Strategy: The AntPro ant control strategy is essentially the warfare strategy described by the 4th century B.C. Chinese general Sun Tzu, in his well known text "The Art of War" . The strategy works well with social insects such as ants, because it fully exploits their behavior and biology.

Of Ants and Earth
E. O. Wilson's view of life takes in all things small and great.
by John S. Rosenberg
Formal retirement E. O. Wilson with his new Pheldole monograph and a specimen tray from the Museum of Comparative Zoology collection. Portrait by Jim Harrison Last year, he published The Future of Life , the most accessible and impassioned of his appeals to humans to take heed of the millions of other species that make the planet habitable. This March, Harvard University Press delivers Pheidole in the New World , Wilson's enormous monograph on the "hyperdiverse" ant genus he has scrutinized for decades. The latter work is, first, a labor of love: Wilson took 16 years to complete it as an after-hours "hobby" at home, drawing all 5,000-plus illustrations himself. In scholarly terms, it bridges the established science of biological systematics and its emerging future: a CD accompanies the printed book, and work underway at the Museum of Comparative Zoology and elsewhere assures that such painstaking research will henceforth be refined and accelerated using digital imaging and genomics techniques, and then promptly disseminated to users worldwide by the Internet. Further, the finished book makes a compelling case in Wilson's larger argument about the dazzling, barely understood, complexity of life: of the 624 known Pheidole species in the Western Hemisphere described here, he says, 337 are new to science.

Army ant colonies, like most ant colonies, have a single queen ant who lays all the eggs and female workers that tend the young and collect food for the colony. One of the things that make army ants even more interesting is how much food they require and how they get it. Army ants belong to one of the subfamilies of ants called the Dorylinae, after the Greek word meaning ‘spear’. There are approximately 150 species of army ant found mostly in the tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America. There are also 100 other species in the ‘Old World’ (Africa, Australia and the Orient) sometimes called ‘ Army Ants ’ but more usually known as ‘ Driver Ants

    Buffon's Needling Ants
The classic probability experiment known as Buffon's needle produces a statistical estimate of the value of pi, the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. The experiment consists of randomly dropping a needle over and over again onto a wooden floor made up of parallel planks. If the needle's length is no greater than the width of the boards, the probability of the needle meeting or crossing a seam between boards is twice the needle's length, l, divided by the plank width, d, times pi: 2l/d p The idea of estimating pi by randomly casting a needle onto an infinite plane ruled with parallel lines was first proposed by the naturalist and mathematician Georges Louis Leclerc Comte de Buffon (1707-1788). He himself apparently tried to measure pi by throwing sticklike loaves of French bread over his shoulder onto a tiled floor and counting the number of times the loaves fell across the lines between the tiles. In 1901, the Italian mathematician Mario Lazzarini claimed to have tossed a needle 3,408 times and obtained a value of pi equal to 355/113, or 3.1415929, which differs from the exact value by less than 0.0000003. How he managed to ensure truly random needle casting and got his remarkably accurate pi estimate isn't clear, though mathematicians have recently argued that cheating must have been involved.

A fierce species of Amazonian ant has been seen building elaborate traps on which hapless prey are stretched like medieval torture victims, before being slowly hacked to pieces.
With cunning and patience, Allomerus decemarticulatus worker-ants cut hairs from the stem of the plant they inhabit, and use the tiny fibres to build a spongy snare, Nature magazine reports. This ingenious feat of engineering has only ever been observed in one other species of related ant, French researchers say. The ants cut hairs to clear a path under the plant stem, while leaving some hairs standing to form "pillars" on top of which the lethal platform will sit. Using the plant hairs they have harvested, the ants weave the platform itself, which is bound together and strengthened using a special fungus. When the ants have completed the chamber they puncture holes all along its surface, each just big enough to poke their heads through.
