HISTORY:
Map: APHIS Quarantine map showing fire ant distribution in U.S . Four species of fire ants are currently found within the contiguous southeastern United States. The tropical fire ant, Solenopsis geminata Fabricius, and the southern fire ant, S. xyloni McCook, are considered species "native" to the area. The two imported species of fire ants were introduced into the United States from South America at the port of Mobile, Alabama. The black imported fire ant, Solenopsis richteri Forel, arrived sometime around 1918 and the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, in the late 1930's. The presence of imported fire ants in the United States was first reported in 1929 by Loding. Both species probably came to the port in soil used as ballast in cargo ships. In the years preceding the arrival of the red imported fire ant, the black imported fire ant slowly spread into adjacent counties in Alabama and Florida. Since its introduction, the red imported fire ant, a much more aggressive species than the black imported fire ant, has spread quickly. By the time of the first official survey carried out by the USDA in 1953, imported fire ants had invaded 102 counties in 10 states (Culpepper 1953). Today, the red imported fire ant has spread throughout the southeastern United States and Puerto Rico (Fig. 1)

All books will be added to your Amazon.com shopping cart and saved there until you are ready to complete your order. The Ants Came Marching ... We started our insect study at the beginning of March. Our first project was setting up our own ant farm in a large glass jar. We collected red fire ants from the playground and carefully moved them to their new home (filled with about 4 inches of sand we collected while scooping them into a large cup). Our ants seem very happy and are busy building hills and tunnels, and they don't seem to mind all the curious eyes that are watching them. We're busy reading all of our wonderful ant books, many of which are listed below. Enjoy!

Don't panic. Carpenter ants differ from termites, which use wood as a food source and will eat sound wood. Carpenter ants do not eat wood; they nest in wet or water-damaged wood. Sometimes they find a void to serve as a nesting area. Most carpenter ant damage occurs during the summer months. Large numbers of ants can be destructive, yet most times they are more of a nuisance than a serious threat to the structure. In most circumstances, they can coexist with humans until managed with IPM methods.
Inspect your home for the ants, as shown inside. Remember that a few ants does not always mean that an infestation is present. Early in the spring, before their regular food is present, workers often wander inside homes looking for sweets. They will scavenge for fats and other foods.
How to Inspect for Carpenter Ants
Live Ants
Outside the house at night, use a flashlight (preferably with a red cellophane filter) to find live ants. Examine the foundation, stairs, deck, porch, landscaping timbers, utility wires, and branches of trees and shrubs touching the house. Carpenter ants are nocturnal and will move in and out of your house at night to feed.

The Ants
Ants are among the most amazing and fascinating creatures in the world. They are all social and live in large groups of mostly sterile sisters who work to raise the sexual offspring of their mother the Queen, there are a lot of books written on ants and I hope that what you read here will wet your appetite to learn more about these delightful and complex creatures.
There are 8,800 known species of ant in the world and they have a wide variety of lifestyles. For instance the giant Australian Bull Ants which can be over 2.5 cms long, live very simple lives and the Queens and Workers look very similar. In contrast the Leaf cutting ants of Central and South America have a much more complicated social structure in their nests. There can be 3 or 4 different sizes of workers as well as large soldiers, males and Giant Queens and Gynes (a gyne is an unmated female sexual, she is called a Queen after she has mated). The oldest known ant in the world was found preserved in amber and lived 100 million years ago in the Mid-Cretaceous period. It is called Sphecomyrma freyi
Though some ant species live in extremely large nests and colonies can contain amazing numbers of ants such as the single supercolony of Formica yessensis on the Coast of Japan which is reported to have had an incredible 1 080 000 queens and 306 000 000 workers in 45 interconnected nests, others can be very small. INTRODUCTION It is perhaps less widely appreciated that invasions also offer unique opportunities for assessing the role of competition and other biotic interactions in the structure of communities (Diamond and Case 1986). For example, invasions allow the potential magnitude and form of interspecific competition to be gauged and characterized before species are lost through competitive exclusion or before the importance of competition is reduced over evolutionary time through niche partitioning and character displacement (Petren and Case 1996). Studies of invasions may thus serve to clarify the mechanistic bases of competitive asymmetries.

Outlines the steps of a typical ant colony, from the creation of the colony to the death of its queen.
http://research.amnh.org/entomology/social_insects/ants/ant_colony_cycle.html
The Ant Colony Cycle
(a) An ant colony starts in general with a queen (alate reproductive female) that has just landed from the nuptial flight in which she has been inseminated by one or more males, has lost her wings and has found a protected place or has excavated a chamber. (b) In this protected place (the nest, that does not necessarily have to be constructed, but can be a natural chamber under a rock, for instance) the queen starts to lay eggs, from which after a certain period, emerge the larvae. The queen may search for food outside the nest or regurgitate her liquefied wing musculature (she will never fly again). In this initial period the queen is respondible for all colony tasks, not only feeding the larvae and herself, but also for the maintenance of the nest and for colony defense. The larval phase is when the ants grow up, so they have to be constantly fed. The queen may search for food outside the nest or regurgitate her liquefied musculature related to the wings, as she will never fly again. In this initial period the queen is responsible for all colony tasks, not only feeding the larvae and herself, but also the maintenance of the nest and colony defense. The larval phase is when the ants grow, so they have to be constantly fed. (c) After the eclosion of the first workers the queen does not perform most behaviors necessary to nest maintenance and colony development anylonger, and restricts herself only to egg laying and autogrooming, while the workers do all other tasks, including the feeding of the queen. The colony passes through a growing phase, not only in population but also in nest size and the area over which the workers forage for food.

Ants Ants can be, literally and metaphorically, irritating, but they are not a major pest. They have some beneficial characteristics; they eat small insect pests and have a part to play in the recycling of plant and animal wastes in the ground and in compost heaps.
Typical symptoms
Ants make nests which can undermine both garden and greenhouse plants, causing them to wilt or die. Some species build mounds on lawns, and this can make mowing difficult and spoil the lawn's appearance. Ants may remove seeds from pots and trays and take them back to feed the colony.
Description of pest
Life cycle
A new ant village starts in summer. The swarms of flying ants which are common on sultry August days are the pioneers. All the nests in the area release potential new queens and their mates at once. The workers who have nurtured them, choose ideal conditions for the one and only mating flight. The males gather in swarms which attract the females. After mating, the males die and the females rub or bite off their wings and begin to look for a suitable home. They have been given enough sperm by the male to last their lifetime. If they survive the predators, which include swallows and ants from rival colonies, new queens begin to lay eggs straight away. These hatch out into sterile workers which will immediately start to work for the expansion of their colony.

Cory, US Dear friend,
If you have been using insecticides for some time, or are thinking or using them to get rid of ants, cockroaches or mosquitoes, you better THINK AGAIN! Insecticides are merely contact based solution, i.e. they only kill pests on the treated surface. So unless you are prepared to use insecticides generously all over your house, it is not possible for you to kill all the ants, cockroaches or mosquitoes in your home. And unless you are willing to put up with the unpleasant odor of insecticides, ants, cockroaches and mosquitoes are GUARANTEED TO RETURN!

Horticultural advice
Advice
Ants (mostly Myrmica Formica and Lasius species)
Ants can cause concern but they are a nuisance rather than destructive pests. They feed mainly on insects, including other ants. They also look for the sweet liquid known as honeydew which is excreted by aphids and some other sap-feeding insects.
Damage
Ants can protect aphids from attack by ladybirds and other predators in order to secure their supply of honeydew. Increased numbers of aphids may result in more damage to plants. However, ants do little damage to plants themselves, except by disturbing soil around plant roots and depositing it on the surface during their nest building activities. Some ants (mostly Myrmica species - commonly known as red ants) can sting, but for most people this is no more than a minor irritation.
Control
Unless their nests are particularly troublesome, ants are best left alone. If a colony is destroyed it is likely that its place will be taken by incoming queen ants, which take over the territory and establish new nests. Disperse ant heaps on lawns by brushing the excavated soil on a dry day before the lawn is mown, otherwise the soil will get smeared on the lawn surface by the mower. If the lawn has an uneven surface due to years of ant activity, peel back the turf in the raised areas, remove excess soil and relay the turf. This is easier to do in the autumn or spring when ants are less active.
