SUBFAMILY ECITONINAE
The New World Ecitoninae, together with the Old World Dorylinae, are the legionary ants, par excellence . Their colonies may reach enormous size (up to 2.2xl0 for Old World Dorylus and up to 10 for Eciton ; Brian, 1965). Colonies are nomadic. The bizarre queens lay enormous numbers of eggs at regular intervals and when the brood reach a certain level of development, the entire colony relocates to a new site. There is never a true nest, as such, but only a temporary bivouac. The available information on army ant life has been summarized by Gotwald (1982).
The Ecitoninae were, until recently included within the Dorylinae, a group now considered to be restricted to the Old World tropics and subtropics (Snelling, 1981b; Gotwald, 1982). Wheeler and Wheeler (1985) have argued in favor of lumping all the legionary ants back into the single subfamily Dorylinae partly because that "... at least is well supported by larval evidence," even though they had earlier stated that larval characters (or their lack) should not take precedence over adult characters. As additional evidence they cited Kistner's (1972) conclusion that

Fire Ants - What are they
Fire Ants, Solenopsis invicta , are serious pests which have been detected in Queensland, Australia. They inflict a painful sting and if not eradicated will seriously affect our lifestyle. They are the greatest ecological threat to Australia since the introduction of the rabbit and are potentially worse than the cane toad. See maps of restricted areas in the Restricted Area Search Engine (RASE)
What do they look like?
Fire ants look very much like ordinary house or garden ants. Fire ants:
  • Are small
  • Are coppery-brown in colour on the head and body, with a darker abdomen
  • Come in a variety of sizes within one nest, ranging from 2mm to 6 mm. This is a distinguishing feature of fire ants
  • Have nests with no obvious entry or exit holes on top of them
  • Can be distinguished by their aggressive behaviour, particularly near the nest
Their nests can appear as dome-shaped mounds, up to 40cm high, or can be found next to, or underneath other objects found on the ground, such as timber, logs, rocks, pavers, bricks etc.

ANTS IV General Information
The 4th Algorithmic Number Theory Symposium (ANTS IV) will take place in Leiden in the Netherlands the summer of the year 2000. Arrival day: Sunday July 2. The end of the conference is on Friday July 7 at 3 PM. ANTS IV will be hosted by the Mathematical Institute and the Lorentz Center of the Universiteit Leiden The ANTS conferences, which are held every two years, are devoted to algorithmic aspects of number theory, including elementary number theory, algebraic number theory, analytic number theory, geometry of numbers, algebraic geometry, finite fields, cryptography and computational complexity. ANTS III was held in 1998 at Reed College, Portland, Oregon.
Local transportation
Leiden is located 25 kilometers south west of Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol). The airport is on top of a railway station having train connections to Leiden that are frequent (4 to 6 times an hour) and fast (20 minutes travel time). The Leiden railway station is walking distance from downtown Leiden, which is only a small area. You can also get a taxi at the railway station. The campus is a 20 minute walk in the other direction from the railway station and there is a bus every 30 minutes. The easiest way to get around between campus, downtown and the hotels is what all the locals do: ride a bicycle. You can rent bikes at the train station. Walking or using public transportion are also good options. There is no need to rent a car.

86. Simulation Of Ant's Emergent Behavior Using Starlogo
A virtual ant colony was created to investigate the emergent behaviors demonstrated by ants. It uses the StarLogo simulation tool.
http://www.thepangburns.com/jesse/projects/ant_simulation.htm
Home Simulation of Ant's Emergent Behavior Using StarLogo This page is about a short personal project of mine to investigate emergent behavior. To this end, I created a virtual ant colony using a piece of software called StarLogo made by some people at MIT. The idea is that each ant alone is next to useless for gathering food efficiently, but a bunch of ants each acting on its own simple set of rules together are able to gather food much more efficiently. This phenomenon where the group ability is greater than the sum of each individual acting alone, can be a form of emergent behavior. An excellent book on emergent behavior is "EMERGENCE The connected lives of ants, brains, cities, and software" by Steven Johnson. This book was recommended by a friend and inspired me to do this project. I'll quote his definition of emergence here, from the inside flap of the book cover: Emergence is what happens when an interconnected system of relatively simple elements self-organizes to form more intelligent, more adaptive higher-level behavior. It's a bottom-up model; rather than being engineered by a general or a master planner, emergence begins at the ground level. Systems that at first glance seem vastly differentant colonies, human brains, cities, immune systemsall turn out to follow the rules of emergence. In each of these systems, agents residing on one scale start producing behavior that lies a scale above them: ants create colonies, urbanites create neighborhoods.

Ants are social animals and live in colonies, sometimes these colonies may contain only 50 or so individuals but one supercolony of Formica yessensis on the coast of Japan is reported to have had 1,080,000 queens and 306,000,000 workers in 45,000 interconnected nests. Some Scientist think that 30% of the animal biomass of the Amazon Basin is made up of ants, and that 10% of the animal biomass of the world is ants. and that a further 10% is Termites.
This means that 'social insects' could make up an incredible 20% of the total animal biomass of this planet.

When first collected and identified in the Homestead, Florida area in 1986, the white footed ant was considered only of minor importance for the pest control industry. This tiny ant has now become quite a nuisance in at least 8 Florida counties, 3 of which are waiting for official confirmation. Originating in certain areas of Japan (Okinawa, Iriomote, southern Kyushu and Nansei Islands,) they were first accidentally imported into Florida. White-footed ants have been confirmed in the following Florida counties:
Dade, Broward, Collier, Palm Beach, Orange and Sarasota These ants have been reported (but not officially confirmed) in:
Martin and St. Lucie Counties, Florida. Biology
Top of Page White-footed ants do not bite or sting, nor have they been reported to cause any type of structural damage. They are, however, attracted to sweet foods. Thus, it is common to find them foraging indoors and outside on hedges infested with honey-dew producing insects such as aphids and scales.
Several biological aspects of the white footed ant make a difficult pest to control , almost impossible to totally eliminate from an infested home:
    • Huge size (in population) of ant colonies.

THE LEAFCUTTER ANTS OF COSTA RICA
Page One Fifty million years before Man planted his first crop, they began supporting vast populations with sophisticated farming systems. The methods used were ecologically sensitive and are the prototype of sustainable agriculture. Their habitats utilize sophisticated waste management systems and their social structure is intricate with every need of the society provided by specialized members of that society. There is no unemployment in their society, all members are provided for and all members work daily for the common good and defense of that society. Who are the beings of this enlightened society? Benevolent aliens? Inhabitants of a parallel universe? Democrats? Nope, they are the Leafcutter Ants! During our recent travels through Costa Rica , one of my favorite activities was observing and photographing these amazing little critters in action. I wanted to put some of these images and observations on the CritterImages site and when I sat down to write a piece on the leafcutters, I ran across a magnificent web site called “The Lurker's Guide to Leafcutter Ants” by Alan San Juan. After exploring all the wonderful material on the site, I realized that I could add nothing more than my images and a few descriptive notes. Fantastic job, Alan! So, I hope you enjoy these images and then head right for
