Generalized Ants
This is some supplementary material to the paper Further Travels with My Ant by David Gale, Jim Propp Scott Sutherland , and Serge Troubetzkoy , which appears in the Summer 1995 issue of the Mathematical Intelligencer . In this paper, the some behavior of a cellular automaton called an "ant" is discussed. The ant moves about, and in each "cell", the ant turns right or left, depending on the the state of the cell, and then changes the state of the cell according to certain prescribed rule strings.
Briefly, an "ant" moves around on an infinite checkerboard, each square of which we refer to as a "cell". Each cell in the plane is labeled as either an L -cell or an R -cell (usually, one fills the plane with L -cells to start). The ant starts out on the boundary between two cells, and as it passes through each cell, it makes a 90 degree turn, turning to the left in L -cells and to the right in R -cells, and it changes the state of the cell it just left, switching L -cells to R -cells, and vice versa. Following this simple set of rules gives rise to some rather complicated behavior; the pattern of the ant's track alternates between apparent chaos and symmetry, and eventually it starts to build a "highway" moving off in a single direction. The above described ant (and some variations) was originally studied by Chris Langton (then at the Santa Fe Institute , more recently a co-founder of the Swarm Corporation ). Later, Jim Propp generalized the ant by considering each cell to be in one of

Introduction
This web resource provides species-level information on the ants of Costa Rica. The basic information unit is a species web page. The page for a particular species contains images, identification tips, geography, natural history, and recommendations on how to collect the species. Linked to these species pages are various synthetic documents, such as keys and species lists. There is a genus list, which contains all the ant genera known to occur in Costa Rica, and there is a picture guide to these genera. The picture guide is not a key; for technical keys to the ant genera of the world refer to Bolton (1994) or Holldobler and Wilson (1990).

Ants rank number one in inquiries at our Ohio State University Extension Entomology office over all other household/structural pests. It is very important to have an accurate ant identification in order to determine the best method of control if needed. When in doubt, collect several specimens in a watertight vial, add isopropyl or 70 percent alcohol (not water), and enclose in a crush proof box. Take to your county Extension office of Ohio State University Extension or mail to the C. NEW General information about Brussels and Accomodations in Brussels is available here The behavior of social insects in general, and of ants living in colonies in particular, has since long time fascinated researchers in ethology and animal behavior, who have proposed many models to explain their capabilities.
Recently, ant algorithms have been proposed as a novel computational approach that replaces the traditional emphasis on control, preprogramming, and centralization with designs featuring autonomy, emergence, and distributed functioning. These designs are proving flexible and robust, able to adapt quickly to changing environments and to continue functioning even when individual elements fail.
A particularly successful research direction in ant algorithms, known as " Ant Colony Optimization is dedicated to their application to discrete optimization problems. Ant Colony Optimization has been applied successfully to a large number of difficult combinatorial problems like the quadratic assignment and the traveling salesman problems, to routing in telecommunications networks, scheduling, and other problems.
ANTS'2000 is the second edition of the only event entirely devoted to ant algorithms and to Ant Colony Optimization . Of great interest to the workshop are also models of real ant colonies organization and functioning which could stimulate new algorithmic approaches.

When 20 or more large winged and/or wingless ants are found indoors, in the daytime near one location, it is possible that the colony is well established in the home and the nest may have been extended into sound wood, sometimes causing structural damage. They do not eat wood, but often remove quantities of it to expand their nest size. However, if only one to two large wingless ants are erratically crawling, they may simply be foraging for food with the nest located outside. Outdoors, they are frequently seen running over plants and tree trunks or living in moist, partly rotten wood stumps. Nevertheless, carpenter ant inquiries rank first over all other household/structural pests in Ohio.

Life Cycle and Habits
Queen Worker In later generations, workers of various sizes are produced (polymorphism) into major and minor workers, that are all sterile females. Males formed are winged swarmers. Larger "major" workers guard the nest, battle intruders, explore and forage for food while smaller "minor" workers expand the nest and care for the young. workers, when disturbed, carry off the larvae and pupa, which must be fed and tended or they die. In a mature colony, there is usually one queen with 200 to 400 winged individuals produced as swarmers. Workers have strong jaws and readily bite (sharp pinch) when contacted.

Ants are among the most prevalent pests in households. They are also found in restaurants, hospitals, offices, warehouses, and other buildings where they can find food and water. On outdoor (and sometimes indoor) plants, ants protect and care for honeydew-producing insects such as aphids, soft scales, whiteflies, and mealybugs, increasing damage from these pests. Ants also perform many useful functions in the environment, such as feeding on other pests (e.g., fleas, caterpillars, termites), dead insects, and decomposing tissue from dead animals. There are over 12,000 species of ants throughout the world. In California, there are about 200 species but fewer than a dozen are important pests (

Beware Of The Argentine Invasion
T he most common ant in southern California is the Argentine ant ( Iridomyrmex humilis
). It is a small, dark-colored ant about 3 mm (1/8 inch) long that invades homes in search of food and water. They are especially fond of sweets, but will feed on practically any food. They love the yolks of hard boiled eggs and carry minute yellow clumps of yolk back to their nest in endless ant columns. These ants are extremely well adapted to urbanized areas of the United States with mild climates and well-watered gardens. They pose a serious threat to native wildlife by upsetting delicate food webs. They are especially formidable due to their aggressive behavior and the enormous size of their colonies which can literally "team up" with other colonies. I T M ost ant colonies are very territorial, and will fight different colonies of the same species. Since Argentine ants in the United States originated from the original colonizers in Louisiana, they are all closely related with very similar DNA. They apparently will accept ants from different colonies as members of their gigantic family. In fact, Argentine ants from different colonies will actually "team up" and attack together in vast swarms. They simply outnumber and overpower their enemy.

Carpenter Ants
Published In this Guideline: Several species of carpenter ants, Camponotus spp., are capable of damaging wood in buildings and other structures. Carpenter ants cause problems mainly in mountainous areas and in forested rural areas along the central and northern coastlines of California; they may also invade buildings in urban locations.
IDENTIFICATION Key to identifying common household ants
Most carpenter ants can be easily distinguished from other species of ants by their large size, up to 1/2 inch long. Common species are dark, often black. Carpenter ants cannot sting but if handled can inflict a painful bite with their powerful jaws. They emit a noxious excretion of formic acid when disturbed. Winged ants, which leave the nest to mate and establish new colonies, are sometimes confused with termites
LIFE CYCLE
Carpenter ants feed on both dead and living insects, aphid and scale honeydew, and juices of ripe fruit. Carpenter ants enter buildings in search of food and may construct nests containing several thousand individuals somewhere within the building. Nests constructed indoors may be satellite colonies of a larger nest located outside near the building, usually in trees. As many as twenty satellite colonies can be associated with a single main colony that contains the queen(s).

Ants are common social insects . They always live in colonies (a colony is a group of related ants); some colonies have millions of ants in them. Each ant colony consists of the following:
  • Queen - The queen begins her life with wings, which she uses while mating. After mating with a male ant (or many males), she flies to her nesting area. She then loses her wings and spends her life laying eggs.
  • Workers - Workers are the many sterile (non-reproducing), wingless female worker ants who are the daughters of the queen. These workers collect food and feed members of the colony, defend the colony, and enlarge the nest. Most of the ants in a colony are workers.
  • Soldiers - Soldiers are large workers (sterile females) who defend the colony and often raid other colonies, capturing slaves.

An Introduction to Ants (Formicidae)
of the Tallgrass Prairie
By: James C. Trager
Originally published in:
Missouri Prairie Journal
(Fall, 1998)
Introduction
Ants are a little-noticed but important part of the tallgrass prairie fauna. There are perhaps 100 species of ants that may be found in prairie tracts over the whole region, of which about 60 are typically found in prairies (Table 1) . In a good-sized prairie remnant, 25-35 of these occur together, somewhat fewer than the number of, say, butterfly species, but individual ants are so numerous that they collectively outweigh many other prairie insect groups. In one Oklahoma prairie, ants were among the top three prairie insect groups, their biomass exceeding that of grasshoppers (Kucera 1991). This paper briefly reviews the ecological roles of ants in prairies, their biogeographic and taxonomic characteristics, and their relationships to prairie restoration and management activities. This resource is based on the following source: Trager, James C. 1998. An introduction to ants (Formicidae) of the tallgrass prairie. Missouri Prairie Journal. Vol. 18:4-8.

Imported Fire Ants (IFA) HISTORY OF IMPORTED FIRE ANTS: Imported Fire Ants (IFA) were accidentally introduced into the United States from South America, beginning in about 1918. Solenopsis richteri or the black IFA was the first of two species of fire ants to be introduced via shipping into Mobile, Alabama. Another species of fire ant ( Solenopsis invicta or the red IFA) also became established in the Mobile area by the early 1940’s. The most common of the two species is the red IFA, which is now established in all or part of 13 states and Puerto Rico. The black IFA is found in a relatively small area comprising a part of northeastern Mississippi, northwestern Alabama, and southern Tennessee, with a hybrid of the red and black IFA being found near this region. The first confirmed sighting of IFA in Tennessee was an isolated infestation in Shelby County in 1948, which was quickly eradicated. Natural migration of IFA was first documented in Tennessee in Hardin County in 1987. Now, much of southern Tennessee is infested with IFA. Tennessee IFA Quarantine Map.
