Sea-going trade
RBC Royal Bank of Canada's history in the Caribbean goes back a long way. In fact, the bank established branches in the Caribbean before some of Canada's western provinces. Strong maritime roots influenced its representation throughout the region. Its commercial relations began with a group of merchants from Halifax, Nova Scotia, who formed the Merchant's Bank in 1864, and were engaged in the thriving sea-going trade between Halifax and the West Indies. In those days Canadian southbound ships carried mainly flour, codfish and timber, returning north with their cargoes of sugar, rum, cotton and spices. Through branches established in all major trade centres in the Caribbean, RBC offered valuable facilities for promoting trade. Early days
The bank's first venture south was Bermuda in 1882 followed by Cuba in 1899. By 1914, the bank's international network included Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Trinidad, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Barbados, British Honduras (now Belize) and Grenada. In that same year, RBC purchased the British Guiana Bank that had opened in 1836. By 1984 the bank had opened a total of 15 branches in Guyana (formerly British Guiana) but in November 1984 RBC ceased to operate there. The
Bio-diversity Centre in Georgetown, created to study Guyana's largely intact rain forest, was built with funds from RBC's operations in Guyana, since foreign exchange restrictions made it impossible to take them out of the country.

Escape to Antigua and Barbuda's dreamy beaches
A Likely Pair Antigua, the largest of the Leeward Caribbean Islands, is often called the “Heart of the Caribbean.” Antigua and its sister islands of Barbuda and the uninhabited Redonda make up the nation of Antigua and Barbuda. While the country is an independent nation, it maintains a strong connection with the U.K. Although Antigua and Barbuda lack the inland scenery of major resort islands like Puerto Rico and Aruba, the rustic landscape and gorgeous beaches, in addition to an escapist atmosphere, are enough to draw many visitors. In fact, this once poverty-stricken region is bouncing back from a period of economic despair and developing a healthy economy based on a young, but growing, tourism industry. For official information, see the Antigua and Barbuda Department of Tourism website, or the CIA World Factbook for Antigua and Barbuda
Antigua and Barbuda: Facts at a Glance Currency The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$). The US dollar is widely accepted, and only the small local businesses use the EC$. The exchange rate is permanently fixed at about EC$2.70 to each $1(USD). Electricity The islands use the 220-volt (60 cycles) system, so North American visitors will need converters.

IN BASSETERRE, ST KITTS Mr Chairman, Your Excellency the Governor-General of St Kitts-Nevis, Colleague Heads of Government, Ministers, Your Lordship The Chief Justice, Distinguished Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Ladies and Gentlemen. We have taken 21 years to return to where we began.
When we started we were anxious but ever fearless. However cautious we were of success, we never once doubted our quest: the importance and permanence of the OECS. When future generations of the Caribbean look back across the passage of our regional development, I have no doubt that they will recognise the beginning of the OECS project as a truly significant and defining moment in our history. It is true that 21 years ago today on June 18th, 1981, representatives of seven of our countries signed the Treaty of Basseterre bringing into being this Organisation that has, over the years, served the interests of our sub-region so well.

    EDUCATIONAL REFORM
STRATEGY FOR THE OECS Chapter 2 The OECS: A Brief Synopsis The Formation of the OECS The Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, OECS, came into existence on 18th June 1981 when seven Eastern Caribbean countries - Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines - signed the Treaty of Basseterre. In signing the Treaty, to which the British Virgin Islands subsequently acceded, the Governments of these Islands declared that they were "inspired by a common desire to strengthen the links between themselves by uniting their efforts and resources and establishing and strengthening common institutions which could serve to increase their bargaining power as regards third countries or groups of third countries." Since 1981 the member states of the OECS have increased functional cooperation among themselves by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Barbados in 1982 relating to mutual assistance In matters such as threats to national security, national emergencies, prevention of smuggling, search and rescue, fisheries protection, and customs and excise control. Further initiatives have included the establishing of a Sports Desk at the OECS Secretariat to organize sports events in the sub-region and to provide technical assistance and equipment to national associations; the establishment of the Eastern Caribbean Drugs Service to reduce the cost of essential pharmaceuticals through bulk purchasing; and the creation of the Eastern Caribbean Investment Service which is designed to seek and promote investment In the countries of the OECS as a whole.

By Janette Hull A Nation that encourages sports and gives encouragement to its athletes is enriched in many ways. We make friends through sports. More nations are brought together by sports like cricket, football, athletics, softball, netball and many more. Netball is one of the many games played in Nevis, but not many Nevisians know the role this game has played over the years, nor even how it started. Did you know that netball has put Nevis on the world map? If not, please read on. Netball originated in the United States of America, and was introduced to the Caribbean by Physical education officers from England who came to the Islands on teaching assignments. Althought the game is played in the USA , it is not popular, whereas it is popular in the United Kingdom. Netball in Nevis is without a doubt the outstanding women’s sport. Prior to 1950 Netball was introduced and played by the Excelsior School on the grounds of St Pauls Rectory. An annual competition was held between the Excelsior School of Nevis and the Girls High School from St Kitts. 1939 - 1940 saw a change. Schools no longer exchanged visits, but ex-pupils from the Excelsior School and the Girls High School played matches in both islands with Nevis always winning. 1945 - 1955 teams from the Charlestown Girls School and ex -pupils from the Charlestown Secondary School practiced at Liburd’s Yard (the ground on which the Administration Building now stands).

    Antigua-Barbuda
The country of Antigua-Barbuda actually consists of three islands: Antigua, Barbuda, and Redonda. The capital city of Antigua is St. Johns. Antigua is roughly 108 sq miles. Barbuda is 62 sq miles and Redonda is uninhabited. The 1991 census posted the population at 63,400 with most of the population of African descent. However, one feels the presence of other ethnic groups within Antigua as well. A significant percentage of the population is East Indian and Hispanic. Antigua is located geographically at the southern end of the Leeward chain of islands in the eastern Caribbean. It is situated 250 miles to the southeast of Puerto Rico. The primary language spoken is English. Other languages spoken on Antigua are Spanish and Patois (a Creole of French, Spanish, and African languages). The climate in Antigua is very mild, with clear blue skies and warm sunshine. It is mostly hot in the day with temperatures ranging from 85 - 92 degrees on a daily basis. The rainy season is not as easy to pinpoint. However, rain falls regularly during the months of October - March/April.
Antigua-Barbuda is an independent member of the Commonwealth. It attained independence in 1981. The government follows a parliamentary system with two legislative chambers and Governor General. The currency for Antigua-Barbuda is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar EC$2.70=US$1.00 (Dec. 2002). The national flower is the hibiscus. The national bird is the Frigate Bird.

    Vere Cornwall Bird (1909-1999)
Lomarsh Roopnarine Vere Cornwall Bird was to Antigua what George Washington was to the United States or what Cheddi Jagan was to Guyana. But because Antigua is so small and situated among so many other small islands in the Caribbean chain, Bird is virtually unknown outside the Caribbean. He is, however, known in the English-speaking Caribbean and in Guyana, for having been, in 1965, one of the three leaders responsible for the launching of the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA), which later became the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) in 1973. Bird was also a founding member of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), which he later chaired.
