It consists of the island of Antigua (108 sq mi/280 sq km) and two smaller islands, Barbuda and Redonda. Saint John's is the capital. Antigua is a hilly island with a heavily indented coast, while Barbuda is a flat coral island dominated by a large lagoon on its western side. Most residents are of African ancestry. Periodic hurricanes can cause heavy damage to the islands. The country has a parliamentary-style government with a bicameral legislature. The British monarch is the titular head of state, but primary executive power lies with the prime minister.

The nation of Antigua (pronounced An-tee'ga) and Barbuda is located in the middle of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. Its craggy coastline hides its beautiful, sandy bays and calm, pristine beaches, while its clear water is home to dazzling coral reefs. Hills gently dot the island's landscape but, generally, Antigua is made up of fields and plains. Climate The climate is mainly tropical marine, with a little seasonal variation. Temperatures range from the mid-seventies in the winter to the mid-eighties in the summer. The best time to visit Antigua and Barbuda is during the cool and dry winter months (mid-December to mid-April). The weather gets hotter in the summer (June to August) and less dry in the autumn (September to November).
