SOCIAL SCIENCES UNIT In this unit, we will explore the differences between gender as it is culturally formed and the biological sex of an individual. As products of a particular culture, we often find it difficult to distinguish between those traits that are biologically inherent and those that are a result of socialized gender roles. We will examine this problem from a variety of critical and theoretical perspectives and draw upon recent work in socio-linguistics, psychology, and sociology. In the homework and feeder assignments, students will have the opportunity to examine a wide variety of writing in the social sciences. The final project will allow each student to produce his or her own piece of social sciences writing. For (date)
Please read the two excerpts on gender issues from Men Women, and Change: A Sociology of Marriage and Family (by Scanzoni and Scanzoni) and Relationships in Marriage and the Family (Stinnet, Waiters, and Kaye). Both of these articles discuss the difference between biological sex and socialized gender. Then, make a list of characteristics that you think are associated with socialized gender roles versus those traits that are inherent and biological. List as many characteristics as you can, because this list will help you think about gender issues for your final project. Also, read the introduction to the Psychology unit and the sample papers from Psychology Assignment # 1 (pages 205-221). Although you do not have to prepare a written response to these essays, we will be discussing them as a class, so please take notes and be prepared to discuss.

Appreciating our strengths, our diversity and our accomplishments in 2004
By now you have received a letter from me welcoming you to the 2004-05 academic year. It is an SCC tradition to begin each year with a letter to the campus community, and this year is no exception. In spite of budget constraints, we were able to balance our budget without cuts in full-time staff and equipment. We had planned a budget based on income from five percent excess enrollment. We were not able to meet this aggressive target, and yet we were able to exceed the state required target and our overall target. We were successful at completing the 2900 Building remodel and are grateful to UWB, SCC@LFP and the employees who work in the PUB for the sacrifices made throughout the process. Please note that my work will continue to take me to Washington, D.C. and Olympia, where I will join fellow community college presidents who will be advocating for more state dollars and promoting community colleges at large. Additionally, I will advocate for higher salaries and better compensation packages for all College employees as well as more professional development funding. I will also join SCC administrators in promoting partnerships and faculty and staff study-abroad and teach-abroad opportunities. It's important to note, however, that I realize that my travels have had impact on the timeliness of response to your needs. For that reason, I have designated Beverly Brandt and Carol Henderson as Executive Vice Presidents to work with you and the Board during my absences in the future.

Acid Rain: Science Projects contains problems and activities designed to emphasize the basic ideas of science and to relate procedures and activities to the real world. Birds, Bats, and Butterflies is a series of leaflets on nature education in outdoor settings describing personal experiences of children in nature, scientific information on nature, and nature activities. The four issues in this series cover the following topics: (1) noticing and understanding changes in nature during spring, (2) finding bird's nests, (3) understanding decomposers in the ecosystem, and (4) watching bugs in the winter. Common Descent Described Graphically
Family Trees, Cladograms, Phylogenies, Charts of Ancestry Graphic by Mark A. Klinger, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh I have loved Mark Klinger's painting of the primate family tree ever since I stumbled across it while making a series of pages covering the world of primates. It shows representative species of Lemurs, Prosimians, New and Old World Monkeys and the Great Apes, including humankind. There is no timeline illustrated and the branching is not intended to convey a precise picture of lines of descent. It is fine art where form and color balance is as important as any scientific details. Adding a Gibbon swinging from branch-to-branch is unnecessary. This illustration was created to help publicize the opening of the new primate facility at the zoo in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I think of it is an artistic rendering where the branches flowing to the right and left are kept in balance. The candelabra-like design correctly shows the branching of chimps and humans from a common ancestor after the branching of our clade from the ancestor shared with gorillas.

Parents are more likely considered by school personnel to be willing or unwilling consumers than to be important stakeholders. Ortiz and Yates (1989) state that "school personnel commonly complain that parents of minority children do not care about their children and fail to take an interest in them...are not involved, supportive or helpful to the school or education professional" (p. 187). When tension exists between school and community, these assumptions can effectively prevent sincere outreach and listening by the school personnel. More systematic school reform typically includes the methodology of "stakeholder survey" interviews and questionnaires for the purpose of needs assessment. Also common are examples of obtaining information separately from representatives of different ethnic groups. We were unable to find, however, procedures which (a) target respondents from specific ethnic groups, (b) yield quantifiable data, and (c) are designed to be constructively reactive, i.e. to lead to self-criticism, reduce tension, and are solution-oriented.

In 1965-66, the department had 10 geology majors and one graduating senior. That number peaked in the early 1980's with 173 majors and graduating classes of 30 (and still only 3 full-time staff members). With the great oil crash beginning in 1981, the department dwindled rapidly and by 1987 we were down to 29 majors, the lowest since 1966 (see page 6). Required sophomore classes such as Mineralogy, which had 50-60 during the boom, dropped down to 3 students by 1987. Can you imagine? Fred Menzer , eat your heart out, Allen Stork thinks its great!

There is a three letter common denominator underlying: the West Nile Virus (WNV) outbreak in New England, the controversial spraying of malathione-a known human chemical carcinogen related to agent orange-over American cities, the growing threat of anthrax or other biological weapons attacks, vaccination policies that are risky and questionable, if not downright deadly, the mysterious "chemtrails" overcasting previously blue skies across North America, and an avalanch of sophisticated counterintelligence propaganda concerning vaccinations and bioterrorist threats eminating from our nation s primary news sources. The C.I.A. (Central Intelligence Agency) is implicated in every regard. As a principle perpetrator of all these threats, and a primary purveyor of propaganda in these domains, America
