Anorexia and Bulemia
Q:
The late singer Karen Carpenter died at age 32 reportedly of a heart attack related to her problem with anorexia and possibly bulemia. Since this matter was fatal to a woman who was young, beautiful, talented, rich and well educated, I suspect that it might be reckless to say that my family or other families are guaranteed to be safe from this problem. Perhaps you can tell us something about these disorders. A: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is mostly a finding in adolescent, well-educated, middle to upper class women. They suffer from a grossly distorted self-image convinced that they are seriously overweight regardless of a physique often reminiscent of a victim of starvation, which is in fact the case. Sadly, as many as one in in ten women with AN began showing symptoms as early as the fourth grade. A profound calorie deficit in combination with poor nutrition sets the stage for chemical imbalances, especially potassium, that can cause fatal heart rhythms as well as protein deficiencies that can also be dangerous to the heart. These young women often feel that they have been raised in households with controlling and critical parents who are demanding and strive for perfection. Exterior looks are too highly prized and are the object of regular commentary, often at the time of life when young women are in the greatest need of encouragement and support. It is no help today that, more than ever, the fashion industry continues to emphasize the maintenance of an unreasonably thin physique. There are also fears around emerging sexuality that may play a role, and that parents should at least ask about.

Diagnosing Anorexia: Do You Have A Problem with Food? The first step toward a diagnosis is to admit the existence of an eating disorder. Often, the patient needs to be compelled by a parent or others to see a doctor because the patient may deny and resist the problem. Some patients may even self-diagnose their condition as an allergy to carbohydrates, because after being on a restricted diet, eating carbohydrates can produce gastrointestinal problems, dizziness, weakness, and palpitations. This may lead such people to restrict carbohydrates even more severely.

Trying to Understand Anorexia
an essay by Susie Thurmond
Once a vigorous, lithesome young girl, Susie lay quietly among an array of tubes and sterile machines. She was not hospitalized due to a tragic illness or from an accident. Rather, she exemplifies one of the many cases of self-inflicted starvation that sadly affects one percent of our nation's women. You may know or even be an anorexic. Why do these girls torture themselves by denying that most basic human need: food? Teenagers are supposed to have fun and eat ice cream, pizza, and jelly-belly's. Most do, but some become stuck in one of the most difficult psychological maladies to overcome. The answers are varied, but for now we will deal with the most common issue contributing to the disease: pressure. Pressures to be a "super-girl" begin at a very young age nowadays. Whether inflicted by demanding parents, the media, coaches or teachers, the result for the anorexic is a serious lack of self-confidence. There are very high expectations for these girls to achieve. They often equate achievement with love. They become people-pleasers in search of the love and acceptance they so desperately crave.

Already Perfect
NOT A PRO ANOREXIA SITE! A PRO RECOVERY SITE! Last Updated On June 1, 2003 I would like to take a moment and reflect on all the good and the bad that has happened to my life; events that I share in common with so many other people. Although we all come into this world on our own path, I think there are many similar affairs that we all struggle with. Becoming happy and content with ourselves is the hardest since we are all our own toughest critics. Even at the age of 15, 37, and 68 people are still trying to find who they truly are. I too am still searching for the balance of body, mind, and spirit. I have always felt that I can achieve anything that I set my mind to. Often, this leads to over achieving and stress upon myself. In the event of hunting to find my balance of self and family, and then throwing fun, accomplishments, and work into the mix, it becomes difficult for me to be easy on myself. I push until I am satisfied, which never seems to come soon enough. I hope that each of you are able to find your balance sooner than I. Until that happens, realize in your heart that you need not impress anyone or stress over the small things, because each and every one of us was born into this world Already Perfect. So, what did you think?

Anorexia is a severe emotional disorder that is increasingly common, especially among young women in industrialized countries where cultural expectations encourage women to be thin. Fueled by popular fixations with thin and lean bodies, anorexia is also affecting a growing number of men, particularly athletes and those in the military. People with anorexia are terrified of becoming obese and refuse to maintain a normal weight, putting themselves in danger of starvation. Anorexia rarely begins in people who are older than 40 years of age. It most commonly appears in the teenage years, affecting up to 3 in 100 adolescents. Although anorexia seldom emerges before puberty, associated mental conditions, such as depression and obsessive-compulsive behavior, are usually more severe when it does. The onset of anorexia is often preceded by a traumatic or stressful event and it is usually accompanied by other emotional difficulties. Anorexia is a life-threatening condition that can result in death from starvation, heart failure, electrolyte imbalance, or suicide.

Anorexia
Dr Rob Hicks Anorexia nervosa is a common eating disorder that often starts with normal dieting to lose weight, but turns into a form of intentional starvation, causing a person to become dangerously underweight.
In this article
Symptoms What happens to the body? Diagnosis and treatment Anorexia usually starts in the mid-teens, although it can start at a younger or older age. Women are more likely to have anorexia than men - bout 90 per cent of those affected are female. It's estimated that about three or four people in every 100 have anorexia. Most deny they have a problem and many have depression. It can run in families.
Symptoms
People with anorexia become obsessed with dieting and weight. They develop a fear of becoming fat and have a distorted image of their body, seeing themselves as fat, even when they're very thin. Under-eating, vigorous exercise, ritualistic food habits and abuse of laxatives cause excessive loss of weight. Most anorexic people have no history of being overweight.

ED-1002-2001
Trisha Rayner Anorexia nervosa is a devastating eating disorder in which those affected adopt patterns of behavior that in extreme cases, may lead to self-inflicted starvation. While men do succumb to anorexia nervosa, most cases are young, middle or upper class women. Researchers have estimated that this disorder affects approximately 1 in 200 young women in our society. Eating disorders, such as binge eating disorder specifically, have a high prevalence among college women. But the aforementioned diseases have narrow definitions. The problem of eating disorders must be seen as a continuum, starting from healthy on one end of the continuum to having the serious disease of anorexia or bulimia on the other end. Why is this such a problem among women? Culturally accepted norms of beauty and fitness are huge factors. Adolescence is a rapidly changing time in our lives and often we may feel that we have little control in the outcome of events around us. Control over our bodies and eating patterns (or lack thereof) is one way to exert power over the forces around us. Unfortunately, many become obsessive about it and develop eating disorders that distort and confuse their sense of how their body should and does look. The defining features of this disorder are: (a) an intense and irrational fear of body fat and weight gain, (b) a determination to become thinner and thinner, and (c) a misperception of body weight and shape to the extent that the person may feel or see "fat" even when starvation is clear to others. These psychological characteristics contribute to drastic weight loss and defiant refusal to maintain a healthy weight for height and age. Food, calories, fat grams, weight, and weight management dominate the person's life and attempts to help are often ignored or met with denial or anger.

How to spot an eating disorder
April 28, 2000 Web posted at: 3:09 PM EDT (1909 GMT) By Susan Chollar (WebMD) Five million Americans suffer from an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. Most of them are young women and teenage girls, although about 5 percent are male. Eating disorders can have devastating effects on health. As many as 1,000 girls and women die each year from the complications of anorexia.

Anorexia
Eating disorders have affected many women. In their quest to look beautiful and "stylishly" thin, they have put their lives in danger. Bulimia and anorexia have become all too common. Thinking they will help themselves look better, these women begin starving themselves or bingeing and purging. They often don't realize the health risks they face as a result. In fact, up to one-fifth of those who suffer from anorexia die, according to research at Louisiana State University. Knowing the facts can help you fight this damaging disorder that is plaguing America. People with anorexia starve themselves-literally. Although they suffer terribly from hunger pains, they deprive themselves because they are so afraid of gaining weight. Anorexia can be easier to spot than bulimia because of the severe weight loss - at least 15 percent below normal body weight. Although anorexics are rigid about eating, they are often obsessed with food.
Disbelief
The anorexic usually doesn't believe she is thin enough. The person with anorexia continues to think that she is overweight even when she is bone-thin. There are always a few more pounds that need to be lost.
