Anorexia nervosa
" Ik was nogal dik en had een beeld in mijn hoofd gevormd hoe ik er uit zou moeten zien om perfect te zijn. Via de t.v. en de bladen zag ik mooie, magere modellen. Zo slank wilde ik ook zijn. "Joanna vertelt over haar vermageringszucht (anorexia nervosa).

Recovery and getting help Anorexia explained What is anorexia? What the dictionary tells us: loss of appetite, a psychological disorder characterized by an aversion to eating and fear of gaining weight. The reality of anorexia nervosa: it is nothing to do with weight, calories or being "thin" - these are merely symptoms of an underlying cause. Anorexia nervosa is a condition in which the sufferer has a fear of weight gain and becoming "fat". However, the reality is that, like all eating disorders, anorexia is merely a mask covering other underlying problems. Eating disorders, particularly anorexia and bulimia, usually affect females but the number of male anorectics is on the increase. Remember, someone can develop anorexia at any age, in any place and in any situation.

    ANDREA GORDON
    Stamford Hospital/Columbia University
Dr. Gordon is Assistant Director, Family Practice Residency Program, Stamford Hospital/Columbia University, Stamford, Conn. If you are a practicing physician, you have patients with eating disorders. You may not be aware of the female patient who regularly binges on thousands of calories and then forces herself to vomit, or of the teenaged boy who aims to eat less than 400 calories a day while exercising rigorously. It is estimated that in the United States, five to ten million women and up to one million men have an eating disorder. These may be underestimates, especially if one takes into account the diagnosis of binge eating disorder that was introduced in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) of the American Psychiatric Association. Anorexia nervosa has the poorest prognosis of all the eating disorders; however, the prognosis is moderately improved if the disorder is detected and treated in its early stages. To that end, this article will highlight signs and symptoms that may be indicative of anorexia and interventions that are within the scope of the primary care physician. In addition, a brief description of some of the theories of anorexia's origins may help physicians to prevent the disorder in some patients.
    Etiology
Theories about the causes of anorexia nervosa include both the psychological and biologic. One psychological theory is that food intake and weight are areas that a young woman can control in a life otherwise dictated by an overly involved family, which may include a parent who is unduely concerned with weight or appearance.

The Truth About Pro-Anorexia Websites Pro-anorexia websites showcase disturbing photos, commandments on being skinny and more. They normalize and encourage dangerous behavior relating to eating disorders.
Extreme weight loss is applauded and female perfection is measured by the size of a girl's arms, legs and thighs. They offer tips on everything from how to avoid eating to "sport vomiting."
Holly Hoff, of the National Eating Disorders Association, has been fighting to get these sites removed from the Internet. Although Yahoo recently removed them from their search engine, these dangerous sites continue to resurface. If your daughter is visiting pro-anorexia sites, she could be in serious trouble and in need of help.

    Trilogy
The Spark of Life Trilogy may help save a loved one's life, or at the least, provide supporters a comforting calm by explaining all aspects of an effective new treatment for anorexia and bulimia sufferers. The author is a licensed counselor who successfully guided his soul mate toward a permanent spark of life through the pervasive dreary darkness of her severely incapacitating eating disorders. Read the amazing real life stories of how he helped his mate overcome the baffling bleakness of bulimia (book 1) over a few years and the absolute agony of severe anorexia (book 2) in a mere half year using his very own therapy (book 3). The third book provides an easily understood methodical explanation of how this dynamic new therapy was applied in the first book on bulimia and in the second on severe anorexia. The Trilogy is not a "war story" glorifying the horrors of eating disorders sufferers, but it is more a practical solution filled guide of what exactly should be done by those sufferers, their supporters, and therapists to effect the most affordable and longest lasting recovery possible. Amidst his prolonged assistance, the author was able to discover the

    http://www.selfhelpmagazine.com/articles/eating/other/anorexia.html
ANOREXIA: I'M NOT A CHILD AND I'M SO AFRAID
    by Joanna Poppink, M.F.C.C
Much is written about teen anorexia. But what about the anorexic teenagers who become young women in their twenties? Many fall in love, get married and try to build a life with their husbands just like other young women. The difference is that the anorexic young woman has anorexic thinking and feeling influencing every decision and action in her life. She is often very afraid. Most people in their mid-twenties go through a kind of developmental shock as they are confronted by new and different kinds of personal challenges in their lives. The woman is only recently no longer a young girl. There are new responsibilities to get hold of and has different expectations placed on her by others and herself. Whether she accepts those expectations or not, she still has to deal with them. This is a particularly stressful and often overwhelming time for an anorexic young woman. An anorexic who for years has been doing a 'good job' at being anorexic is hiding in plain sight all the time. She's thin, but not skeletal. According to fashion dictates, she is elegantly lean in a most feminine way. When friends and family see her they often see an attractive, dainty and feminine young woman who, in their eyes, might be a lovely model. She is a bit on the nervous side and does overreact to a few things, they think, but, they continue to themselves, she's still young. She'll outgrow it soon.
