Anorexia Nervosa
SYMPTOMS
People who intentionally starve themselves suffer from an eating disorder called anorexia nervosa. The disorder, which usually begins in young people around the time of puberty, involves extreme weight lossat least 15 percent below the individual's normal body weight. Many people with the disorder look emaciated but are convinced they are overweight. Sometimes they must be hospitalized to prevent starvation. People with anorexia typically starve themselves, even though they suffer terribly from hunger pains. One of the most frightening aspects of the disorder is that people with anorexia continue to think they are overweight even when they are bone-thin. For reasons not yet understood, they become terrified of gaining any weight. Food and weight become obsessions. For some, the compulsiveness shows up in strange eating rituals or the refusal to eat in front of others. It is not uncommon for people with anorexia to collect recipes and prepare gourmet feasts for family and friends, but not partake in the meals themselves. They may adhere to strict exercise routines to keep off weight. Loss of monthly menstrual periods is typical in women with the disorder. Men with anorexia often become impotent. Specific Symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa:
A person who suffers from this disorder is typically characterized by their refusal to maintain a body weight which is consistent with their build, age and height. Specifically, a person's

Stopping
Anorexic
Madness
Hello everyone out there. My name is Megan, and I am anorexic. I have been for about three years now. I decided, after a recent conflict with my boyfriend Josh over this, to create this web page and hopefully completely stop this anorexic madness...hence the name of this page. Josh, may I mention, is such a great guy. He's always been there and I love him so much, and he said that it hurts him when I hurt myself, so in an effort to not force him to break up with me, I am doing my best to get myself back on the right track, and I am hoping that it will work.
In 7th and 8th grade, I looked in the mirror, and I hated what I saw. A fat, ugly, disgusting piece of white trash. Don't argue with that if you didn't know me then. I was severely overweight for my age. Though it pains me to say this, I was 175 pounds when I was 13. And I hated that so much. So, after dozens of sleepless nights and crying and feeling sorry for myself, I decided I was going to do something about that. I didn't want to feel like that forever. Now, as I look back, maybe what I decided to do wasn't the bestest of choices, but it did seem to help me as much as many of you don't think it did. I mean, in just a few months I lost 30 pounds, and I guess it was after then that I though, "Ya know, this is seemingly working. Maybe I should continue." But now, I think I just got some sense knocked into me, and I am making a sincere effort to do whatever I possibly can to end this. But it will take time...

Anorexia Nervosa
What is anorexia?
Anorexia nervosa is often considered to be a type of eating disorder in an entire spectrum of eating disorders. It is also, and more importantly, a psychological disorder. It is a condition that goes beyond out-of-control dieting. The person with anorexia initially begins dieting to lose weight. Over time, the weight loss becomes a sign of mastery and control. The drive to become thinner is actually secondary to concerns about control and/or fears relating to one's body. The individual continues the endless cycle of restrictive eating, often to a point close to starvation, in order to feel a sense of control over the body. This becomes an obsession and is similar to an addiction to any type of drug or substance. Anorexia generally affects females, but can affect males as well. And while anorexia typically begins to manifest itself during early adolescence, it is also seen in young children and adults.

What is anorexia nervosa?
Anorexia nervosa (anorexia) is an eating disorder with both physical and emotional traits. A person with anorexia is very underweight, yet the person severely limits the amount of food he or she eats, has a distorted body image , cannot maintain a healthy body weight, and is intensely afraid of gaining weight. Long-term or severe anorexia can lead to starvation, serious health problems, and even death. Anorexia can become a lifelong illness, although it is possible to fully recover with proper treatment.

Sjogren's syndrome and anorexia
Editor's Note: Dr. Sanjay Gupta answers medical questions submitted by e-mail at 2:30 p.m. ET Saturdays on "Your Health." The questions and answers are available on CNN.com after the show. Q: What is Sjogren's syndrome? C. Martin in Georgia A: Sjogren's Syndrome is an autoimmune disease in which the disease-fighting cells attack the glands that produce tears and saliva, resulting in dry mouth and dry eyes. Other symptoms may include dry skin, skin rashes, thyroid problems, joint and muscle pain and pneumonia. Between 1 million and 4 million Americans suffer from Sjogren's syndrome. More than 90 percent of people affected are women. The exact cause of the abnormal immune response is unknown. There is no cure for Sjogren's syndrome, but the symptoms can be treated and controlled by decreasing discomfort and reducing the harmful effects of dryness. E-MAIL DR. GUPTA

http://www.edreferral.com/anorexia_nervosa.htm
International Eating Disorder Referral Organization Anorexia Nervosa Defining characteristics of Anorexia Nervosa: Individuals with anorexia nervosa are unwilling or unable to maintain a body weight that is normal or expectable for their age and height (most clinicians use 85% of normal weight as a guide). Individuals with anorexia nervosa typically display a pronounced fear of weight gain and a dread of becoming fat although they are dramatically underweight. Concerns and perceptions about their weight have a extremely powerful influence and impact on their self-evaluation. The seriousness of the weight loss and its physical effects is minimized or denied (women with the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa have missed at least three consecutive menstrual cycles). Diagnostic criteria of anorexia nervosa include two subtypes of the disorder that describe two distinct behavioral patterns. Individuals with the Restricting Type maintain their low body weight purely by restricting food intake and increased activity (i.e. compulsive exercise). Those with the Binge-Eating/Purging Type usually restrict their food intake but also regularly engage in binge eating and/or purging behaviors (i.e. self-induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics or enemas). Binge-Eating/Purging Type of Anorexia Nervosa is also frequently associated with other impulse control problems and mood disorders. People who suffer from anorexia often have low self-esteem and a tremendous need to control their surroundings and emotions. The eating disorder is often a reaction to external and internal conflicts (i.e. anxiety, stress, and unhappiness can be leading factors).
