Inadequate calorie intake or excessive energy expenditure results in severe weight loss (see also bulimia and intentional weight loss Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top The exact cause of anorexia nervosa is not known, but social attitudes towards body appearance and family factors are believed to play a role in its development. The condition usually occurs in adolescence or young adulthood. It is more common in women, affecting 1-2% of the female population and only 0.1-0.2% of males. Anorexia nervosa is seen mainly in Caucasian women who are high academic achievers and have a goal-oriented family or personality. Some experts have suggested that conflicts within a family may contribute to this eating disorder. It is thought that anorexia is a way for a child to draw attention away from marital problems, for example, and bring the family back together.

Then she was off to a family dinner, where her parents praised her as the "perfect daughter." Toll of eating disorders Comments?

Anorexia Nervosa : Judy's Story
Hello! Welcome to my webpage. Let me begin by introducing myself to you. My name is Judy Sargent. I am 37 years-old and a recovered anorexic. I suffered from severe anorexia nervosa for 10 years, was hospitalized 26 times, and landed myself in intensive care units on multiple occasions. You would never guess any of these things looking at me today. Right now, I am a registered nurse with a Master of Science Degree in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing. I am in the process of completing Doctoral Studies in Nursing at a major university. In my spare time, I have written a book about my descent into anorexia and the subsequent recovery process. My book is titled, "The Long Road Back: A Survivor's Guide to Anorexia." I wrote the book with the hope that it will offer individuals currently suffering from an eating disorder, family members, friends, and therapists insight, compassionate understanding, and hope. My book provides a hopeful and uplifting journey through the recovery process. The links provided below will assist you in finding helpful information. Thank you for visiting this site.

Hayley used to love going to the food court with her friends, but now just the thought of it fills her with dread. Besides, she doesn't really even have time to hang with her friends anymore - she needs more time for her running and cardio. It feels like every time she looks in the mirror she looks fat, although the scale says she's losing weight. Hayley doesn't feel like herself anymore. She's having a hard time concentrating in school and she's always so tired. Hayley has an eating disorder. Eating disorders are common in America - between 5 and 10 million people have them, and experts estimate that 1% of American teens have an eating disorder. That means if your class has 400 students, probably about four of them have this condition. Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa
The two most common types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa , more commonly known as anorexia and bulimia. The two disorders can be difficult to distinguish from each other because they have similar characteristics: With both anorexia and bulimia, the person will have a distorted image of his or her body. That person will seem to be obsessed with what he or she eats. Both anorexia and bulimia tend to affect girls more than guys, but 10% of the people with eating disorders are guys. And, because we typically think of eating disorders as only affecting girls, they often go unrecognized in guys. Guys with eating disorders also tend to focus more on athletic appearance or success than on just looking thin.

and Atypical eating disorders in males Anorexia was first described in males by both Morton (57) and Gull (58). Anorexia in males accounted for approximately six percent of cases seen in an eating disorder clinic (38,59). Anorexia may be underdiagnosed because many physicians, as well as the anorectics themselves, are unaware that this condition occurs in both sexes. The mean age of onset of male anorexia has been reported ranging from as young as 17 years in a British series by Crisp and Burns (47) to 24 years (38,60). Crisp found that the illness was present an average of three and one-half years and that most patients were mildly obese (127.3 percent of ideal body weight, IBW) prior to the onset of illness. Minimal weight dropped to 67.3 percent of IBW (60) during the acute phase of illness. Apparently contrasting socioeconomic groups of origin for male anorectics may represent specific populations, seen in various programs. Andersen and Mickalide (48) found a high socioeconomic group at Johns Hopkins, while Herzog (38) in Boston and Verdereycken and Van den Broucke (59) in Belgium found an even socioeconomic distribution.

Anorexia nervosa Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by voluntary starvation and exercise stress. Anorexia nervosa is a complex disease, involving psychological sociological and physiological components. A person who is suffering from anorexia is referred to as 'anorexic' or (less commonly) 'anorectic'. The term is frequently but incorrectly shortened to anorexia , which simply refers to the medical symptom of lost appetite. Anorectic can also refer to appetite-suppressing drugs.

        Characteristics
The causes of anorexia are a matter of debate in medical circles and society in general. General perspectives fit between the poles of it being physiological or psychological (with the potential for sociological and cultural influences being a cause to various degrees) in origin. Many now take the opinion that it is a mix of both, in that it is a psychological condition which is often (though not inherently) borne of certain conducive neurophysiologic conditions. edit
        Physiological
The primary physiological characteristics of anorexia nervosa are voluntary starvation and exercise stress. In addition to intentional starvation, subjects will also take part in a high level of physical activity. Anorexia nervosa also has a negative impact on the

Anorexia Anorexia (deriving from the Greek (orexe) = appetite) is the decreased sensation of appetite . While the term in non-scientific publications is often used interchangably with one of its subtypes, anorexia nervosa , there are many possible causes for a decreased appetite, some of which may be harmless while others pose significant risk for the person. edit
    Causes
Common disorders that cause anorexia include anorexia nervosa, severe depression cancer dementia AIDS , and chronic renal disease Anorexia may also be seen in congestive heart failure , perhaps due to congestion of the liver with venous blood Although the presenting symptom (the one which prompts a patient to seek medical attention) in acute appendicitis is abdominal pain , the presence of anorexia is requisite to making the diagnosis Some medications, antidepressants for example, can have anorexia as a side effect. Most notoriously, however, chemicals that are a member of the phenethylamine family are known to have more intense anorectic properties. For this reason, many individuals suffering from anorexia nervosa seek to use these medications as a crutch. Such prescription medications include Ritalin Adderall , and Desoxyn . In some cases, these medications are prescribed to patients prior to undergoing an operation requiring general anesthesia. This is a prophylactic measure taken to ensure no food will back up into the esophagus and cause the patient to stop breathing during the procedure.
