MRI and spinal fractures in AS patients
A new Taiwanese study compares CT and MRI scans of spinal fractures in ankylosing spondylitis patients; it concludes that MRI "shows abnormalities in AS that may not be clear or even detectable by using other imaging methods" i.e., fractures, deformities and ligament tears. Vioxx lawsuit: $253 million
More on the COX-2 front. Once Vioxx was pulled from the market, the lawyers got busy. A plaintiff in Texas has won a $253-million (U.S.) judgment against Merck; her husband died of a heart attack while taking Vioxx in 2001. Her lawyer expects the final award to be reduced, and Merck is appealing. All told, Merck is facing $8 to $25 billion in potential liabilities from various lawsuits, which apparently number around 4,200. Posted by mcwetboy at 8:47 AM 0 comments

about options that may be available for your specific situation. BASIC INFORMATION DESCRIPTION Arthritis is the inflammation of one or more joints. It is characterized by pain, swelling, stiffness, deformity, and/or a diminished range of motion. More than 50 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and related conditions, such as fibromyalgia, gout, lupus, Lyme disease, psoriatic arthritis. Reiter's syndrome, Sjogren's syndrome, and ankylosing spondylitis. These conditions affect the body's movable, or synovial , joints. Joints of the body are found at the knees, wrists, elbows, fingers, toes, hips, and shoulders. The neck and the back also have joints between the bones of the spine. There are six different types of synovial joints (hinge, ball-and-socket, and so on), but although the types of motion they allow are different, their underlying physiological structure is essentially the same. Two or more adjoining movable bones, whose adjacent surfaces are covered with a layer of cartilage, are surrounded by a fluid-filled capsule made up of ligaments (tough, fibrous tissue). The third is secreted by a thin membrane, the synovial membrane, that lines the inside of the joint capsule. This viscous fluid along with the smooth, rubbery, blue-white cartilage that covers the ends of the bones normally work together to allow the bones within the join to glide smoothly past one another.

HSS Doctors Available to Comment on FDA's Approval of Celebrex for Spinal Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis
New York, NY, Aug. 2, 2005 — The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Cox-2 inhibitor Celebrex for use in treating a form of arthritis in the spine called ankylosing spondylitis. The disease affects more than 400,000 Americans, typically between the ages of 17 and 35, Pfizer said in a statement. Ankylosing spondylitis can also cause inflammation, pain and stiffness in the shoulders, knees, hips, ribs and feet. Whether patients are recovering from joint replacement surgery or sports injuries, or suffering from arthritis, osteoarthritis or lupus, they are looking to their healthcare practitioners to help them put this data into perspective and help them make the right treatment decisions. The following Hospital for Special Surgery doctors are available to comment on ankylosing spondylitis and treatments, including options other than Celebrex:

It took a while, but finally i decided there's no future in writing the same stuff each time to new contacts so better put it in a final form. I am glad wrote to so many people about AS, about the starch-free diet as discussed on the forum (LSD/NSD) and about my approach, problems, solutions and successes. Writing to people helped me learn and to clarify my thoughts and ideas so the interaction with new people was as cathartic as the interactions with the more knowledgable co-enquirers from the forums. Here's hoping it was of use to those newly diagnosed people i met. There's so much to know and learn about this stuff that one can only do it gradually. Luckily, much of it is just good natural health principles so it is universally useful, we may have been exposed to it before, and if not then we still acquire useful and real knowledge for life. Lucky for me that i was well resourced at my employment with internet, access to scientific papers and to various scientific disciplines. There is a lot of fellowship and support on the "main" forum and chemical info etc. on others. There is info on the diet - called the London Diet originally - and scientific papers.

has anyone with ankylosing spondylitis ever been cured?
Posted by Ian on May 28, 1999 at 01:02:24: Hi all: I am preparing to start the e-diet for myself in a quest to cure myself of sever chronic fatigue, light-headedness and autonomic problems. However, since the impetus for these diets was arthritic conditions, I am curious to know if anyone actually knows someone personally who has been cured of ankylosing spondylitis? My sister-in-law has this terrbile condition, and is currently resigning herself to 'pain management' classes, where she is being told that she will suffer tremendously for the rest of her life. It is a terrible ordeal for her and her family. Is there hope? How much relief is possible? Thanks for any input. Ian

Psoriatic spondyloarthropathy The Spondyloarthropathies are a group of disorders that share certain characteristics : 1. Arthritis - including peripheral arthritis and spinal involvement, usually involving also the sacroiliac joints. 2. They are Seronegative for Rheumatoid factor. 3. They may be involved with other medical problems - including... Psoriasis. Inflammatory bowel disease- ulcerative colitis or crohns disease. Post infective or reactive -to urogenital or gastrointestinal infections. Overlaps of these disorders may be seen. A strong genetic association with Class 1 HLA B27 gene (on chromosome 6) is described. Clinically they present with swelling of joints or an enthesopathy - inflammation of tendon insertions into bone. There is pain swelling and joint stiffness. The joint distribution depends on the subtype of the disease. Spinal involvement is characterised by sacroiliitis and inflammatory back pain. The latter consists of pain stiffness and progressive spinal restriction.

Spondylitis: Frequently Asked Questions
Quick links: What is spondylitis?
Spondylitis (pronounced spon-d-lie-tiss) is the name given to a group of chronic or long lasting diseases also called Spondyloarthritis (spon-dyl-oh-arthritis) or Spondyloarthopathy (spon-d-low-are-throp-ah-thee). These diseases are forms of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affect the spine, although other joints and organs can become involved. The group of diseases in the spondylitis family includes:
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) - Ankylosing spondylitis is the primary disease in the spondylitis family of diseases and is a form of chronic arthritis that primarily affects the spine, although other joints can become involved. Occurring primarily in young adults, (age of onset normally before age 35), AS causes inflammation of the spinal joints (vertebrae) that can lead to severe, chronic pain and discomfort.
    Undifferentiated Spondyloarthropathy (USpA)
    - Undifferentiated Spondyloarthropathy (USpA) is a term used to describe symptoms and signs of spondylitis in someone who does not meet the criteria for a definitive diagnosis of AS or related disease. Over time, some people with USpA will develop a well-defined form of spondylitis such as ankylosing spondylitis.
