Educational Programs and Materials Age-appropriate for high school: The Chihuahuan Desert Lab (CDL) is one of five National Park Labs models designed to enhance science, math, and technology studies at the high school level. CDL is a comprehensive program that includes a resource-based curriculum and provides opportunities for students to participate in resource monitoring and stewardship activities at Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks. Focus topics include Water Quality Monitoring of Human Impact, Cave Swallows, Reintroduction and Monitoring of Prairie Dog Populations, Revegetation of Chihuahuan Desert Grassland Ecosystem, and Geographical Information and Global Positioning Systems. For more information, contact the park education specialist at 505.785.3127. Our high school geology curriculum guide Age-appropriate for middle school: is a curriculum guide designed to assist in teaching about geology. While geared toward the geology of Carlsbad Caverns National Park, background material is provided to make it applicable to other parts of the country as well. The curriculum is broken into six units focusing on the development of the Delaware Basin and Capitan Reef, plate tectonics, uplift and mountain building, the role of anaerobic bacteria in the formation of caves in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, weathering and erosion, and the origin of various cave formations. A unit overview provides general information concerning the specific topic and follow-up activities supplement the lesson. Content standards and benchmarks (specific to New Mexico), a glossary, and additional resources are also provided.

Professional Commentary:
The activity described in this lesson presents students with an opportunity to simulate the uncontrolled spread of a disease through a population. The activity is a simple one in which the students mix the contents of their test tubes with those of several of their classmates. Most students begin the activity with distilled water. A few start with a weak sodium hydroxide solution. After the contents have been mixed each test tube is tested with phenolphthaleine to determine which of the students have been theoretically exposed to the disease. Students then engage in an epidemiological study to locate "patient zero." This activity can be used as part of a larger lesson or unit on disease transmission, disease prevention, or the functions of the immune system. It would also be appropriate to use this activity to build scientific inquiry skills. (ts)

What is Animal Science?
Animal Science is concerned with the science and business of producing domestic livestock species, including but not limited to beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, poultry, sheep, and swine. An animal scientist applies principles of the biological, physical, and social sciences to the problems associated with livestock production and management. Animal Science is also concerned with foods of animal origin: meat, dairy foods, and eggs. The food industry is one of the largest and most important industries in the United States. In addition, animal science is concerned with aspects of companion animals, including their nutrition, care, and welfare. If you are interested in efficient production of food animals, processing and consumption of high-quality meats and dairy products, use of companion animals for recreation or leisure purposes, or the maintenance of animal health and well-being, then a career in one of the many animal sciences fields may be your key to a rewarding future. Professional education and training in the animal sciences can prepare you for challenging career opportunities in such areas as animal production, breeding, health maintenance and disease control, marketing, processing, distribution, and numerous allied service industries. Additionally, it is a convenient major for biologists interested in animals and an eventual career after veterinary, medical, dental, or graduate school.

Introduction
The challenges faced by rural students do not respect state boundaries. Persistent poverty, historical dependence on natural resources, geographic isolation, underdeveloped infrastructure, low population, and limited economic opportunities are common. There has been a shift from the emphasis on natural resources to an emphasis on human resources. The goal of the education system is to facilitate response to this shift by focusing on its role in developing the needed human resources for economic growth and development in rural areas. Access to quality materials and facilities, community involvement and development, and leadership at the state, county, and school district levels are key to the success of improved rural education.
