Preface
This Internet resource guide was developed to provide helpful and informational resources for teachers and students in grades K through 12, undergraduate and graduate levels, in the areas of Science Fairs and Animals in Education and Research. Additionally, sections on Kids Pages and Animal Careers have been included as additional resources and for those interested in animals. This listing is not meant to be comprehensive but is intended to provide a starting point for information on the subjects listed. Many of the sites listed will also lead to additional related web sites. While web sites constantly change and can not be guaranteed, these web sites were all active at the time of publication. Information on how to request materials that are included in the collection of the National Agricultural Library (NAL) may be found on the Document Delivery Services Branch website at http://www.nal.usda.gov/ddsb

A-2. Authority, Composition and Functions
Each institution which falls under authority of the AWA and/or receives PHS support for research and teaching involving laboratory animals must operate a program with clear lines of authority and responsibility, a properly functioning Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), procedures for self monitoring, adequate veterinary care, a program of occupational health, sound animal husbandry practices, and appropriate maintenance of facilities for housing animals.
The IACUC also monitors the use of animals in teaching activities as specified in the USDA Regulations, but this does not come under the Policy, unless it is supported by PHS.

AMRC policy statement on the use of animals in research Association of Medical Research Charities have produced a collective position statement on the use of animals in medical research in relation to projects that its member charities might fund. The statement makes clear that all members share public concerns about animal welfare and any research that is funded is carefully planned to avoid duplication keeping the number of animals used to a minimum. The highest standards of welfare must be employed and all members strive to ensure that non-animal testing is used wherever possible. AMRC charities also support and comply with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 as well as further guidance which has been issued by the Home Office. ESOL "Fight For Literacy..." (1981) from Iranian Postage and Commemorative Stamp Gallery What's the difference between ESL (English as a second language) and ESOL (English for speakers of other languages)? For the purposes of LR/RI's work, ESOL is the preferred term as it does not assume that learners are necessarily taking on a second language (for many language learners, English is a third, fourth or even fifth language); it also shifts a sometimes invisible emphasis of the importance of English over that of other languages towards an explicit acknowledgement of the primacy of language and culture in all our lives. For a detailed discussion of the use of the terms ESL and ESOL see the strand archived on the NIFL-ESL Literacy Listserv [1997 archive] , (scroll down to ESL or ESOL ). Animals in Science
Frequently Asked Questions Links to Animal Sites Care of Classroom Pets Animals are used in science for many purposes. We study animals to learn about the animals themselves, and to learn about ourselves. The results of these studies are better health and well-being for both humans and animals. We may study animals by observation, or through experimentation, using the Scientific Method . Animals are used as models of a disease to find out which drugs are safe and effective against a disease. They are also used as a model of normal reactions to substances that may be harmful if ingested or contacted, so that we can use consumer products safely. Finally, animals are used to teach budding scientists and doctors how the body works. Animals used for these purposes are treated humanely. Several Federal agencies have established guidelines for humane care and use, and institutions using animals have their own set of rules and regulations, all geared toward minimizing discomfort to the animals, and ensuring that alternatives to animals are used whenever possible. About Minnesota AALAS The Minnesota Branch of the American Association for laboratory Animal Science Inc. was established in 1965 as an organization of laboratory animal professionals, including researchers, veterinarians, veterinary technicians and animal care technicians.

Their Future in Your Hands
An excellent introduction to animal rights . Ideal resource for stimulating discussion and debate. Rather than just a simple catalogue of the inhumanity of vivisection and factory farms, it is a film of hope, showing how we can all help to create a less violent world for humans, animals and the environment. Has been used extensively in hundreds of schools.
