You are an animal expert and have been asked to teach second grade students about How does an animal become endangered? What animals are endangered?
http://www.websterschools.org/classrooms/dewittlibrary/webquest.htm
ENDANGERED SPECIES WEBQUEST
Teacher Tips!
Introduction: Your expertise is needed! "At the present rate of extinction as much a third of the world's species could be gone in the next twenty years." ( World Wildlife Fund )What can be done about this? As Wildlife experts you have been hired by the School District to inform the second grade about this problem. Task: The second graders have been studying animals. They are curious as to what endangered animals are. Our library materials on this subject are difficult for them to read and understand. You are an animal expert and have been asked to teach second grade students about endangered animals. It is important for the students to not only understand the problem but to be a part of the solution. You and two other experts will work together to create materials to help them understand the concept and plan an activity that students can do to help animals.
Process:
I. You will work in a team of three students. Brainstorm all you know about endangered species. Then create a list of questions that you need to answer to complete your task. Ideas to consider: What is biodiversity? What is an endangered animal? How does an animal become endangered? What animals are endangered? Where do they live? Are there any in your area? Does it really matter if a species disappears? What is being done to prevent extinction? Does more need to be done? You may have other ideas to add. Use notecards to keep track of the information you collect. You will have two periods in the media center to research and class time to finish your tasks. You may also work outside of school. You will present to the second grade in two weeks.

Endangered Species for Primary Grades
by Esther Perlman, Grade 2, Gladwyne Elementary School, Gladwyne, PA Each year, Esther Perlman's second graders learn about endangered animals. Over the past decade, her students have studied the brown bear, panda, mountain gorilla, tigers, rhinoceros, elephants, bald eagle, and whales. In 1997, her class studied alligators. Perlman's endangered species unit includes student research, zoo visits, and culminates with whole class and individual writing and art projects. Her students also become teachers by presenting what they have learned to their families. This exciting project gets the whole school community involved, including the Art teacher and class parents. Most significant, is the opportunity for Perlman's students to reach out to the larger community by presenting their model to the zoo, the NFL Eagles, and a homeless shelter. Projects like these stay with your students long after they have moved on from your classroom. They require careful planning and coordination, and Esther Perlman has provided the " Sequence of Events " for her unit of study and " Construction Aspects " to help you get started.

So Many Troubling Reasons Take a look at this graphic that shows reasons why an African animal may be on the endangered species list. Trouble On The Savannah!
Many African animals make their home on the savannah. Now the population of Africa is growing so rapidly that people must live and farm on these grasslands. A lot of animals need to live in game reserves and parks. Trouble makers
Poachers are people who shoot animals to get their fur and tusks. Most countries have outlawed poaching, but many still kill animals because of the huge amount of money they will get for the horns and tusks. The Trouble With Hunting When the Europeans came to Africa, they often hunted the native animals for sport and for their furs and tusks. Wars: Trouble For People; Trouble For Animals!
Europeans came to Africa and took over territory. Disputes arose about this and there was fighting. Many innocent people died in these wars. Other innocent victims of the fighting were the animals. Don't Get On This List! The official list of endangered animals is called The Red List. It is kept by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. This organization looks at the number of animals in the wild and what is happening to the animals' habitat. They look at environmental and predatory dangers that the species might be facing. At a meeting of the IUCN Council in November 1994, this organization set up guidelines to put animals in certain categories. These categories help people all over the world better understand what they must do to protect animals that are in danger of extinction. To find out more about The Red List you can go to

Middle level and above If you are looking for a program to teach your students about endangered wildlife, the CD-ROM program Discovering Endangered Wildlife could fit your needs. Both educational and fun, the program includes excellent pictures, audio and video clips. The many active screen buttons add to this program's success. The game portion of the program requires the user to participate actively, giving the multimedia program its great strength. It provides information on our planet's endangered wildlife in two very distinctive ways, through either The Discovery Game or The Discovery Tour. The Discovery Game begins with a picture selection of an endangered animal. A screen of empty squares follows this selection. The player aims to bring life to this screen by uncovering the chosen endangered animal in its entirety. When clicking on a square, the user must solve different puzzles, crosswords, and respond to cues that are provided through very good pictures, videos, and narration. Each solution adds to your knowledge about this animal. Solving each puzzle adds a piece toward completing the picture.

Description:
Common Name: Ocelot
Scientific Name: Leopardus pardalis The complexion of the Ocelot's fur is a sort-of peach colored background with many elegant black spots. Its tail has black rings all the way down which resembles the tail of a very shorthaired raccoon. The Ocelot has lines of black around its neck, long whiskers, and ears that have been covered in black. This scheme of dark colors helps the ocelot hide itself in the underbrush. The ocelot, like most felines, has incredible sight capabilities and is nocturnal. The ocelot can see six times as well as the average human. The ocelot has a very widespread, carnivorous diet of animals such as small deer, monkeys, mice, rats, birds, turtles, lizards, rabbits, and other animals smaller than itself. Females are pregnant for about 70 days and usually deliver around two kittens. Mothers are left to take care of their young primarily on their own.
Environment:
Ocelots have a wide range of habitats including jungles, rain forests, bushy areas, and yearly flooded areas, specifically wet areas such as riverbanks and marshlands. These diverse territories range from Argentina to southern Texas. These wet areas are usually chosen because ocelots are great swimmers. The advantage of swimming gives them the upper hand when defending or hunting in their wetland territory.

JAGUARS
by William Miller, Robbie Peter, Jennifer Butler, Derrick Gormley, and Thomas MacLean
Physical Description
The jaguar is the largest and most powerful wild cat in the Western Hemispere. The jaguar is larger then the leopard. The jaguar's coat has different colors, but they are usually yellow-brownish with black spots, like leopards. Some jaguars are even white. The jaguar's coat on its side and back is spotted with large black rosettes, each consisting of a circle of spots surrounding a central spot. The spots on its head, legs, and underside are solid black. An adult male jaguar may be four to seven feet long, excluding the long tail. Its tail is about 45 to 75 centimeters long. The jaguar stands about three feet high at the shoulder, and it weighs up to 300 pounds when full grown. The jaguar has heavily muscled forearms and shoulders that add strength for capturing its prey. It has a massive head, and long thick legs. The jaguar's hindlimbs are longer than its forelimbs to improve jumping. Its forepaws are equipped with long, retractile claws to help grab and hold its prey. The jaguar has a rough tongue that is designed for peeling the skin away from the flesh of its prey, and to peel the flesh away from its prey's bones. The jaguar has loose belly skin which allows the animal to be kicked by its prey with little chance of injury.
Habitat
Jaguars are found on the American continents; they live in Texas, in the Cerro Colorado Mountains in Arizona, the southern part of California, and New Mexico, in the United States, and are found in rain forests in Central and South America. The largest known population exists in the Amazon rain forests. Black jaguars live in South America. Jaguars are also found in Africa and Asia. Until the 1900s, they also roamed the Yukon, southern United States to Uruguay, and Iceland.
