Encountering the Idea
We have been learning many new things about dinosaurs. One thing we have not talked about is how new dinosaurs were born. What would you guess? How do you think dinosaurs were born? Do you think that they were born live from their mother, like kittens or puppies? Or do you think they hatched from eggs? (Pause for student responses and suggestions.) What does the name "dinosaur" mean? Yes, we said that it means "terrible lizard." So, how do you think lizards are born? We will discover more things about these dinosaurs in our lesson.

    • Students will explain the relationship between the shape of a tooth or toe bone and the animal's diet. (Meat-eater, herbivore, etc.)
    • Students will predict the overall size and shape of a dinosaur based on a single bone. (Is it large and bulky? Slim and fast?)
    • Students will understand the methodology of functional morphology, the study of why organisms have the shape they do. (Why does this animal have a tooth shaped like this? What type of food could best be cut by this shape of tooth?)
    • Students will interpret whether these animals were well adapted to their environment (e.g., "Survival of the Fittest"). (Is this the best possible shaped tooth/toe to help capture and eat a particular type of food? Does its predicted diet match with the known shape of the animal? How could the animal have been better shaped to obtain its type of food?)
    • Students will be introduced to basic concepts and methods of paleobiology, such as paleoecology and evolution.

    Students will understand the following:
The age when dinosaurs inhabited Earth (about 250 million years ago to about 65 million years ago) is called the Mesozoic age. The Mesozoic age is divided into three periods, from earliest to latest: the Triassic period, the Jurassic period, and the Cretaceous period. The plants and animals on Earth differed during these three periods. Changes in plant life affected the development of animal life. Materials For this lesson, you will need:

    Students' Guide
Tracking Dinosaurs is filled with interesting activities, games, and other resources that explore the world of dinosaurs. You may have noticed that most school books and science books list facts about dinosaur behavior and anatomy without explaining how the authors and scientists reached their conclusions. Tracking Dinosaurs goes beyond the facts. You'll experience the same process scientists undergo by observing, predicting, experimenting, and drawing conclusions about animals and events that happened millions of years ago. In this exploration you'll find three fun outdoor and indoor activities that you can do by yourself or with your friends and classmates. You can even ask your parents or teacher to join you.
Stamping Dinosaurs: In this activity you will learn how scientists compare animal anatomy from tracks while re-creating a life-size plaster cast of a dinosaur track. You can also construct an animal track rubber stamp. Tracking Dinosaur Behavior: In this activity you will learn how to make more accurate interpretations of fossil evidence by comparing tracks of known events with tracks from unknown events. The known events in this activity are your tracks. This activity also features a Mystery Track Game. Teams of students try to stump each other by interpreting their opponents' mysterious tracks.

Each step is described in detail as a paleontologist carefully removes the fossil from stone, prepares it for transport and ships it to a museum. The book explains how a scientist can put the fossilized bones back together to make a complete dinosaur skeleton for display. Activity Two: How Fossils Are Formed "Scientists who study things left from life long ago are called paleontologists. Many fossils from plants and animals have been found all over the world. The remains of plants and animals that have turned to stone over millions of years tell us what life was like back then. Fossils can tell us much about dinosaurs except their color and habits. A. Figure 2. Coal mine in the Kenilworth Coal, near Kenilworth, Utah, east of Helper, showing numerous overlapping round-bottomed dinosaur footprint casts extending down from the roof. Here, the roof's texture of irregular-shaped lumps extends down from the surface as far as 30 cm. Few distinguishable foot prints can be identified, but innumerable toes, heels and partial footprints overlap one another randomly. The swamp surface had been heavily bioturbated, or "dinoturbated".
Abstract Dinosaur footprint casts have been observed at three major horizons within coal mines in the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian) Blackhawk Formation near Price, Utah. These include the mine floor, the mine roof, and in sediment above the roof seen only in rock-fall areas. Carbonaceous sandstones in the floor were formed as brackish and subsequently freshwater swamps became established on foreshore sediment, close to the shoreline. A small, bipedal animal producing footprints 11cm long walked in one of these youthful swamps. Sediment exposed in the mine roof, after coal is removed, often has preserved in it thousands of footprint casts of numerous types and sizes of animals which had walked on the peat blanket of much older swamps. In certain areas the soft peat surface had been heavily bioturbated by dinosaur activities with many footprints partly overlapping and obscuring previous tracks. Fossil plants occur with many of these footprints.

Scientist have tests they can do to see how old the bones of a dinosaur are. They lived millions of years ago. What happened to the dinosaurs, and why aren't they living today? No one really knows the answers to these questions. Some say that their habitats changed making it hard for them to find food. In today's world, that is going on right now with our animal kingdom... there used to be 8 subspecies of Tigers... now there are only 5. It is important to help our animals live so they do not become extinct like the dinosaurs did. They are extinct... aren't they?
