Funsteps To Learning: Sample Curriculum
Funsteps Day 1
Unit: Dinosaur Days
Concepts To Teach Dinosaurs are animals that lived millions of years ago. There are no dinosaurs on the earth today. Scientists have made many discoveries about dinosaurs by studying their fossils. Dinosaurs were many sizes. Some were as small as chickens. Others were giants as big as three or four-story buildings. All dinosaurs were hatched from eggs. Some dinosaurs were meat-eaters. Some dinosaurs were plant-eaters. Some dinosaurs lived on land and other dinosaurs were swimmers or flyers. Preparing For The Unit Display pictures of dinosaurs throughout your facility. Set up learning center areas with dinosaur activities of various kinds, such as dinosaur puzzles, dinosaur games, toy dinosaurs, dinosaur activity books, and dinosaur coloring books. Use your library media center as a resource for films about dinosaurs appropriate for preschool age children. Set up a learning center area with picture books about dinosaurs of various kinds, for the children to look at. Take the children on a field trip to a science museum that has a display about dinosaurs, so the children can get a better understanding of the actual size of dinosaurs. Perhaps they will also be able to see some dinosaur fossils or fossil prints.

http://www.uky.edu/KGS/education/make_tracks.htm
KGS Home Earth Science Education
Making Tracks Stephen Greb , Kentucky Geological Survey Introduction Fossils are evidence of ancient life (usually) preserved in stone. When most people think about fossils, they think about bones and skeletons. Not all fossils, however, are the body parts of ancient organisms. A very important type of fossil is called a trace fossil (scientifically termed an “ichnofossil”). Trace fossils are the tracks or trails an organism leaves behind. In this activity, students will make trackways by running across sheets of paper, and then their classmates will determine what they can interpret from the trackways. Grade Level : Time : 15-30 minutes to make the tracks and then 30 minutes to interpret and discuss the tracks Materials
  • 100 feet of rolled paper. Can be black or white art paper, or meat-wrapping paper from grocery store. Any roll will do that is not waxy so that paint or chalk will stick to it, and that is firm enough not to tear when a student or students walk or run across the paper. Tape (to hold down the paper) Chalk (powdered and colored works best) or water-color paint to make footprints. Choose a color or colors that will contrast with the color of the paper chosen

Most animals and plants that die don't turn into fossils. Usually they're eaten by other animals or decay before they can be fossilized. But if a dying animal falls in the mud and is covered by more layers of mud, it will likely turn into a fossil. This how it works; the bones absorb minerals from the mud, and after a very long time, the mud turns to rock and the bones then become fossilized. The fossil is now made up of minerals. When paleontologists dig for fossils, they use tools such as trowels and brushes to gently unearth the fossil. Fossils are often fragile and must be handled gently. Paleontologists often make copies of fossilized bones using a special plastic so that they can reconstruct skeletons without damaging the fossils. The original fossils are then used for scientific study. Objective:
Students will get a sense of how fossils are uncovered and plaster molds are made.

Classroom activity: Interpreting the Tracks
Authors:
Brent Breithaupt and Judy Scotchmoor
Overview:
Students will discover the relationships among foot length, leg length, stride length and speed in bipedal animals. Data collected and graphed for a student population will be applied to track data from a research site in Wyoming to make inferences about dinosaur physiology and behavior. Trackways provide direct data in the form of foot length/size and stride length. These data can provide clues about dinosaur speed.
Grade Span:

A visit here provides the reality of the size and shape of these animals. It allows them to see what has excited scientists with so many examples of the skeletons, fossils, and representations of what life was like millions of years ago.
Curriculum Unit:
Grade K
Science Objectives: At the end of a 3-4 week on dinosaurs, the kindergarten student will: 1. Identify various dinosaurs and explain why they are different from other dinosaurs. (What they eat, their size, their body shape, their habitat). 2. Define the following words: Extinct, Paleontologist, Fossil. 3. Represent in art (painting, markers, journal drawing, stenciling) a scene in which dinosaurs are shown. 4. Identify animals that still exist today that lived with the dinosaurs.

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Dinosaur , one of a group of extinct reptiles that lived from about 230 million to about 65 million years ago. The word dinosaur was coined in 1842 by British anatomist Sir Richard Owen, derived from the Greek words deinos, meaning “marvelous” or “terrible,” and sauros, meaning “lizard.” For more than 140 million years, dinosaurs reigned as the dominant animals on land. Owen distinguished dinosaurs from other prehistoric reptiles by their upright rather than sprawling legs and by the presence of three or more vertebrae supporting the pelvis, or hipbone. Dinosaurs are classified into two orders according to differences in pelvic structure: Saurischia, or lizard-hipped dinosaurs, and Ornithischia, or bird-hipped dinosaurs. Dinosaur bones occur in sediments that were deposited during the
