Animal Welfare Animal welfare, which is caring for and meeting an animal's needs, is practiced as a matter of course in the sport of rodeo. We respect, admire, and want to take care of the animals that are so important to our way of life.
It's obvious that rodeo is not taxing for the huge, powerful bulls that toss cowboys around like rag dolls, but some people may wonder if roping is hard on calves. A calf has more than tripled its weight when it is first roped, which is at about 200 pounds on the Senior Pro Rodeo tour, and is a strong animal. It takes the special roping and handling skills exhibited by the rodeo cowboy to manage the strength of a calf whose instinct is to flee or fight rather than cuddle.
The roping contest is an extension of the necessary skills developed by ranch cowboys on the open range over the last 200 years, to help with doctoring, etc., without benefit of pens and corrals. The muscular structure of a calf and its hairy, thick hide allows prudent roping without harm. As is observed, immediately upon removal of the rope, calves trot out of the arena in a most unconcerned manner. Calves, who soon outgrow weight limits for the event, then fulfill the same purpose they would have in the dairy or beef industry, after their brief stint in the rodeo arena.
Bull riding has become rodeo's most popular contest. It is not related to any ranch task, but looking at it from the standpoint of the animals, bull riding serves the bull population. More female cattle than male cattle are required in both dairy operations and the building of beef herds. More male cattle are born than are needed for breeding purposes. Rather than send some of those male cattle to the beef packers, rodeo adds years to their lives. Injury to animals is infrequent with rates documented at a small part of 1%. The use of horses and bulls in rodeo is so undemanding that they stay healthy and perform well for many years. It is not unusual for a bucking horse to be kicking up its heels in fine fashion over the age of 25 and many bulls are still active buckers at 15 years of age. Veterinarians attribute it to the good care they receive which includes quality feed and adequate exercise.

Places that have good animal welfare have a manager who cares about welfare. Dr.Grandin comments on Specific animal welfare Issues
http://www.grandin.com/welfare/intro.welfare.html
Animal Welfare
Observations made on several hundred farms, ranches, feedlots, and slaughter plants indicates that the single most important factor which affects animal welfare is the attitude of management. Places that have good animal welfare have a manager who cares about welfare. Places where animal welfare is poor often have a manager who does not care. A good manager enforces standards to maintain good welfare. Employees are well trained and people who abuse animals are punished. I have observed that the most effective manager is involved enough in day to day operations to care but he or she is not so involved that they become numb and desensitized to animal suffering. People who handle hundreds of animals each day can become desensitized. They need a strong manager to serve as their conscience. Animals are not Things

RE-HOMING AN ANIMAL. TEN THINGS TO CONSIDER.
Our animal welfare centres are always looking for new loving homes for their animals but it is important they are placed with suitable and loving owners. Taking on an animal is a big commitment and owners must ensure that can look after the many needs of their new pet. At the Scottish SPCA we have many happy re-homing stories. However, we also sometimes see the same pet returning to our centres, which is very distressing for the animal. To try and prevent this from happening, we ask you to consider the following ten issues before you re-home a pet. 1. Accommodation - what is your accommodation like? Do you live in a flat or house? How much garden and/or grass space is available? If you want to re-home a dog make sure that you have enough room and plenty of opportunities for walks. Will you have to get permission from a landlord or your local council if you live in an authority-owned home? 2. Pets cost money!

Despite repeated denials that it never happens anymore, the animal welfare group In Defense of Animals goes and finds dogs caged up for human consumption and suffering in terrible conditions.

Overview Common Questions What IDA is doing ... Multimedia
In Defense of Animals (IDA) has learned that two million South Korean dogs are electrocuted, strangled, or bludgeoned to death each year. Then they're boiled, skinned, browned by a torch, chopped up and eaten.
All of this cruelty and suffering is enough to make you sick. Where do the dogs come from? Thirty percent are stolen from families that love them. Most are homeless dogs, captured by butchers and sold in open markets. The tragic reality is that authorities are giving the dog meat trade their silent blessing by turning a blind eye to this outrageous bloodbath even though Korean law forbids the sale and consumption of dog meat. The country's Animal Protection Law, which was passed in 1991 considers dogs to be "domestic pets." Let me assure you the eating of dog meat isn't based on any deeply rooted Korean tradition. Koreans have only eaten dogs when poverty has been widespread, as was the case during World War II. Even in those hard times, dogs were treated as companion animals. Now, however with the unspoken blessing of the government, greedy, unscrupulous dog traders in South Korea propagate the myth that canine meat increases male sexual prowess and general health. This illegal industry has organized itself well. It bribes government officials and police, hires thugs to intimidate animal welfare campaigners, and persuades newspapers to extol the "virtues" of dog meat.

Nebraska Becomes 41st State to Declare Animal Cruelty a Felony
Nebraska Governor Mike Johanns recently signed into law a bill that makes intentionally torturing or mutilating an animal, or conducting a cockfight or dogfight, a felony. The legislation also makes neglect or abandonment of an animal a Class I misdemeanor and requires employees of government-run child and adult protection and animal control agencies to report suspected abandonment, neglect and mistreatment of animals. "I can't imagine anyone being against something like that," said State Senator Ray Aguilar (D-Grand Island). Conducting a cockfight is legal only in Louisiana and New Mexico, and dogfights are prohibited throughout the United States.
State Sen. Ernie Chambers , who is a champion of animal welfare, introduced the original legislative bill. State Sens. Paul Hartnett Marian Price Elaine Stuhr and Dennis Byars introduced and/or co-sponsored correlating animal cruelty legislation that was merged into the final bill. They deserve credit for LB273, this session's often overlooked but welcome and compassionate law making animal cruelty a felony in Nebraska (send them a thank-you email by clicking their names, Sen. Animals in Science
Frequently Asked Questions Links to Animal Sites Care of Classroom Pets Animals are used in science for many purposes. We study animals to learn about the animals themselves, and to learn about ourselves. The results of these studies are better health and well-being for both humans and animals. We may study animals by observation, or through experimentation, using the Scientific Method . Animals are used as models of a disease to find out which drugs are safe and effective against a disease. They are also used as a model of normal reactions to substances that may be harmful if ingested or contacted, so that we can use consumer products safely. Finally, animals are used to teach budding scientists and doctors how the body works. Animals used for these purposes are treated humanely. Several Federal agencies have established guidelines for humane care and use, and institutions using animals have their own set of rules and regulations, all geared toward minimizing discomfort to the animals, and ensuring that alternatives to animals are used whenever possible. About Minnesota AALAS The Minnesota Branch of the American Association for laboratory Animal Science Inc. was established in 1965 as an organization of laboratory animal professionals, including researchers, veterinarians, veterinary technicians and animal care technicians.
