We have made progress since our beginning in 1935, but much more work needs to be done. The Animal Welfare League is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that receives no city, state or federal funding and relies on private donations to continue with its mission of helping all animals. Our Mission Statement Prevent cruelty to animals Provide quality homes for animals through our adoption program Promote respect and compassion for all creatures through education Provide shelter and care for homeless and unwanted animals Reduce pet overpopulation through our low cost spay/neuter clinic Provide veterinary care for low income pet owners Relieve the suffering of all animals Make a donation now, using PayPal! Animal welfare organizations from Oregon, North Texas, Houston, as well as the LA/SPCA, HSUS and ASPCA, are only a few of the many groups who have benefited from their generosity. A massive effort is underway. Over 3000 animals are now located at the temporary shelter in Gonzales. More arrive daily. Volunteers are working at photographing each animal and posting their pictures on disaster.petfinder.org. If you are missing a pet, or know of one in need of rescue, please call (225) 647-0712
PLEASE do not e-mail information concerning an animal needing rescue. It's taking us several days to respond to our e-mails these days and your pet may not have several days.

Central Virginia Animal Organizations This web page began as a personal bookmark list that I used while working as a volunteer at my local animal shelter. While my volunteer career has taken another direction (see this ), so many people have found this page useful that I am committed to maintaining this list of animal-related organizations in my area, in order to assist local pet owners and would-be pet owners in finding the resources they need. Thank you very much to everyone who has emailed me over the past few years to help me keep this page as up-to-date as possible. Please Note: This list is for informational purposes only. Inclusion on this list does not imply my endorsement. In fact, my only contact with 99% of these organizations is by their email request to be listed. I am not a current shelter volunteer. If you are looking for a pet, try Petfinder . Many of the shelters and rescues below are members! If you know of a local organization that should be listed here, or if you have any updates or corrections, send e-mail to pawprints@virginia.edu

Welcome to the Animal Welfare section of the Defra website. Like many of you looking at this site, we recognise that animals are sentient beings - not merely commodities. It follows that the standards of animal welfare we apply are very important. The following pages are a guide to what Defra is doing to ensure priority is given to these standards for welfare of animals on-farm, during transport, at markets and at slaughter. The independent advisory body Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC) , provides advice for Ministers on these issues. Details of Government Responses to the FAWC reports are also available.
