On this page: Wikipedia Mentioned In Or search: - The Web - Images - News - Blogs - Shopping animal welfare Wikipedia animal welfare Animal welfare is the viewpoint that some or all animals, especially those under human care, should be treated in such a way that they do not suffer unnecessarily. This position usually focuses on the morality of human action (or inaction), as opposed to making deeper political or philosophical claims about the status of animals, as is the case for an animal rights viewpoint. For this reason animal welfare organizations may use the word humane in their title or position statements.
History of animal welfare
Concern for the well-being of other animals probably first arose as a system of thought in the Indus Valley Civilization as the religious belief that ancestors return in animal form, and that animals must therefore be treated with the respect due to a human. This belief is exemplified in the existing religion, Jainism , and in varieties of other south east Asian religions. Other religions, especially those with roots in the

Asilomar Accords
Guiding Principles
1. The mission of those involved in creating the Asilomar Accords is to work together to save the lives of all healthy and treatable companion animals.
2. We recognize that all stakeholders in the animal welfare community have a passion for and are dedicated to the mutual goal of saving animals' lives.
3. We acknowledge that the euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals is the sad responsibility of some animal welfare organizations that neither desired nor sought this task. We believe that the euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals is a community-wide problem requiring community-based solutions. We also recognize that animal welfare organizations can be leaders in bringing about a change in social and other factors that result in the euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals, including the compounding problems of some pet owners'/guardians' failure to spay and neuter; properly socialize and train; be tolerant of; provide veterinary care to; or take responsibility for companion animals.
4. We, as animal welfare stakeholders, agree to foster a mutual respect for one another. When discussing differences of policy and opinion, either publicly or within and among our own agencies, we agree to refrain from denigrating or speaking ill of one another. We will also encourage those other individuals and organizations in our sphere of influence to do the same.

Dhiman B ut for the relentless efforts being made by the animal welfare organisations, humane societies, charitable trusts, societies for prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA) and some kind-hearted individuals, the condition of animals would have been far worse that it is at present. It goes to the credit of these organisations that despite formidable odds, such as financial constrains and indifference of the government agencies, they are doing an excellent work to ameliorate the living conditions of the creatures in distress. D ifferent organizations focus on different aspects of animal welfare. Some of them profess vegetarianism and create public awareness for being kind to the animals. Some others are engaged in establishment of rescue homes, animal shelters, sanctuaries, pinjarpoles, and gaushalas, where animals and birds in distress stay under protection. M any organisations are running hospitals and health care centers for animals and birds, maintaining mobile dispensaries and keeping ambulance vans for transporting ill and injured animals. Sterilization of stray animals and offering pets for adoption are also amongst the activities of some of the organizations.

The George Washington University Law School Animal Welfare Project The Animal Welfare Project is an independent pro bono project associated with the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, a student organization devoted to researching and improving animal welfare laws in the District of Columbia. Overseen by Professors Mary Cheh and Joan Schaffner , the Animal Welfare Project works to increase awareness of issues regarding animal welfare and to foster community initiatives among the area's leaders in animal welfare organizations and activities.
The Project began in the fall of 2003 as a pro bono effort of students and faculty committed to improving the lives of area animals. Over 40 students participated in some part of the Project's efforts. Students researched all aspects of animal welfare including population numbers, laws and regulations, enforcement, and possibilities for reform. In March 2004, the Project hosted a panel discussion on the District's animal welfare laws and proposals for reform as part of the first-ever "Animal Law Summit: Reforming Animal Welfare Laws in the District of Columbia." The panelists were area leaders in animal protection who discussed the impact of current laws on their work and recommendations for strengthening the laws. In addition, the Summit was attended by representatives from numerous animal welfare organizations throughout the metropolitan area.
