No other organization does more for the health and welfare of cats than The Cat Fanciers' Association. Consider the far-reaching effects of the health studies financed by the Winn Feline Foundation . Consider the effect of our cattery inspection program , and our committment, worldwide, to rescue and aid cats displaced durings disasters . On top of that add in our Trap, Test, Vaccinate, Alter, Identify and Release Program for managed feral cat colonies, our promotion of responsible pet ownership and public education , our dedication to present the most beautiful cats in the world to the public, and our quest to constantly do the "right thing". Education is one of our priorities, and we are working on proposals for ethics and education. Pamphlets are being drafted, in conjunction with the animal health committee, for buyer education and youth education regarding responsible pet ownership. A new program will see vet students receive copies of our breed profiles, Winn Feline Foundation information, and a presentation on our CFA recognized breeds, cattery management, the CFA Inspection program, disaster relief, and a discussion of breeder/veterinarian relationships. CFA has been an integral part of the disaster rescue picture . At the Disaster Summit hosted by the American Humane Association, CFA was recognized as the expert in cat rescue and aid, and will be a vital participant in any future disaster rescue mission as warranted. Our goal is to provide the appropriate level of resourcing based on the disaster, be it money, personnel, supplies, and/or equipment.

    Animal Behaviour and Welfare
UCAS Code D390 Public interest in animal behaviour and animal welfare continues to grow, with widespread implications for the way in which animals are treated, used and included in society. In response, we have designed a unique new degree programme which is aimed at students who have an interest in the scientific assessment of animal welfare, and who wish to study animal behaviour in depth. This programme will provide students with a thorough scientific education to enable them to assess the welfare of nonhuman animals and to design improved housing and management practices for farm, laboratory and companion animals. It will also demonstrate how animal behaviour can be applied in a variety of different contexts, including conservation, animal production and the management of wild or feral animal populations. This programme is unique in the UK in the depth of its underpinning science. In Year 1 of the programme students will be based in Bristol, and will be taught alongside students pursuing programmes in Biological Sciences. In Years 2 and 3, students will be based in the School of Veterinary Sciences at Langford, some 14 miles south-west of Bristol. The area is in the heart of the Mendips with easy access to theatres, restaurants and cultural attractions in Bristol, Bath and Wells. The environs offer such outdoor activities as walking, rock-climbing, caving, riding and sailing. A new state-of-the art teaching facility is being constructed at Langford, providing lecture and seminar facilities of the highest quality.

It is important that students entering the animal industries are well prepared to provide sound, science-based advice on animal welfare practices to industry, interest groups and the public. The AWSC offers a number of teaching and training programs delivered via University subjects and courses, including the following:
    • Graduate Certificate in Animal Welfare (Monash University)
The Graduate certificate in Animal Welfare (GAW) is offered by the Department of Psychology at Monash University as a fourth year certificate. It is taught in the off-campus learning mode and students are required to attend a one day on-campus workshop per unit. The GAW offers professionals the oppurtunity to further their education and personal development in the area of animal welfare. In particular, the course aims to provide valuble and relevant training in animal welfare issues for people working in areas of animal husbanry, animal training and veterinary care, and to provide graduates with knowledge and skills necessary to manage the ethical, biological, behavioural and human challenges relevant to animal welfare issues. Undergraduate subjects on Animal Welfare (The University of Melbourne)
"Animal Welfare" is currently offered as a complete subject at the University of Melbourne. In addition, the subjects "Animals in Society" and "Applied Animal Behaviour" are offered together with the subject "Animal Welfare" to undergraduate students in the degree Bachelor of Animal Science Management in the Institute of Land and Food Resources at The University of Melbourne.

    HUMANE EDUCATION PROJECT
AWT has initiated a project to help foster and implement the inclusion of humane and character education project into the curriculum of New York City public schools. This project will enable schools to meet requirements of both Character and Humane Education laws of New York State. The first step in this project was the sponsorship of a Humane Education Symposium which was held in New York City in September of 2004. This forum was attended by experts in the field of Humane Education and resulted in a valuable discussion as to the best way to proceed with this project. AWT is currently supporting efforts to write curriculum for what is expected to be a two year pilot program which will reach approximately 200 students. We expect to begin introducing this program in January of 2006. Upon the conclusion of this pilot project it is expected that the program will be rolled out more broadly in the New York City area. It is hoped that this effort can be a prototype that can be expanded to other cities across the state and the nation. AWT views its role in this project as one of providing initial leadership and sponsorship. The objective, however, is to structure this project as an independent tax exempt organization in the second half of 2005.

    Review of 2004
Last September, AWT had a board retreat where we re-examined our major strategies in terms of achieving our overall mission to alleviate animal suffering and to foster respect for animals. Essentially, we reaffirmed the organization’s three pronged approach by supporting farm animal reform humane education , and vegetarianism , both through direct projects as well as through our grant program. With respect to our grant program, in 2004 we gave out $105,500 in grants to fifteen organizations. The grants ranged in size from $1,500 to $20,000. Details can be found under the grant program section of this site. On the project side, we have continued to formulate and develop active projects in each of these broad areas. The most advanced of these projects is in the vegetarian category with our sponsorship of the New York Coalition for Healthy School Lunches. In 2004 AWT established The Coalition as an independent 501(c)(3) corporation and gave the new organization $30,000 in start up funding. The organization has made exciting progress in promoting plant based daily lunch options to public school students. Further information on The Coaltion can be found at web site at www.healthylunches.org

Animal rights, animal welfare: which is it?
Throughout the first half of the 20th Century, animal owners improved standards of care for their livestock, lab animals, and pets, tossing out harsh, ineffective, and inefficient methods and embracing a kinder, gentler stewardship of animals. Some people talked about the “rights” of animals to food, water, shelter, and care, but the emphasis was on improving our relationship with animals, not tossing it to the winds. However, in the 1960s, talk of animal rights took on new and more sinister meaning; today animal rights advocates shout in the marketplace of ideas about animals, and they poison the climate with their rhetoric. The noise they generate confuses the public about both animal welfare and animal rights, so NAIA offers this assessment of the differences between the two. Animal welfare celebrates the bond between animals and humans; animal rights wants to sever that bond. "It is time we demand an end to the misguided and abusive concept of animal ownership. The first step on this long, but just, road would be ending the concept of pet ownership."

Observations made on several hundred farms, ranches, feedlots, and slaughter plants indicates that the single most important factor which affects animal welfare is the attitude of management. Places that have good animal welfare have a manager who cares about welfare. Places where animal welfare is poor often have a manager who does not care. A good manager enforces standards to maintain good welfare. Employees are well trained and people who abuse animals are punished. I have observed that the most effective manager is involved enough in day to day operations to care but he or she is not so involved that they become numb and desensitized to animal suffering. People who handle hundreds of animals each day can become desensitized. They need a strong manager to serve as their conscience. Animals are not Things
