With the ever-increasing human and pet population in our world today, it is vital to spread the important messages of the Animal Welfare Society: the importance of spaying and neutering pets, of long-term commitment to a pet, kind animal treatment, and the link between domestic violence, child abuse, elder abuse and animal abuse. In conjunction with Prevent Violence York County our shelter is working on the issues surrounding all forms of violence- for both humans and pets. The Director of LAC is the coordinator for the program.
  • On-Line Courses
The on-line training program is provided through courses offered by the ALAS Learning Library . The Director of LAC is the coordinator for the program and will determine the specific on-line courses each individual must pass. A core of specific on-line courses will be required of all animal research personnel. Additional courses will be added to address the specific needs of the research (e.g., specific species, surgery, biohazards). Animal care personnel will be assigned on-line courses related directly to their responsibilities and their facility’s species.
  • In-Facility Training
Training records will be kept in the LAC office and at the applicable facility. These will be reviewed at the time of protocol submittal to ensure that everyone listed on the protocol has received the necessary training. The facility will be responsible to ensure that all individuals working with animals have completed the necessary training.

These are students with a background in a relevant area of science such as animal behaviour, animal science, or veterinary medicine, or very occasionally students with a different background wanting to do a science-based graduate degree. These students will generally do a thesis in our core research area, namely animal welfare in relation to the housing and management of animals. Graduate education in animal welfare includes:
    • Thesis Completion . By researching, writing, and presenting a thesis, students acquire general skills in research design and methods, critical thinking and reading of relevant literature, detailed knowledge of the thesis area, and skills in writing and communicating.

    Careers in Animal Welfare
Career paths are highly dependant upon the individuals interests and background. However, general areas include:
    • Humane Movement . The humane movement is a significant employer, but until very recently there was little specialized university education that prepared people to work in this field. Students often develop research and communication skills together with broad exposure to animal welfare science, animal ethics, and current animal welfare issues. This makes an excellent preparation for a career in the humane movement.
    • Animal Industries or Related Government Positions . The animal industries and related government departments are facing an increasing need to deal with animal welfare issues, but few people in the animal industries have specialized education in animal welfare.

Courses deserving of special recognition could be those that, for example, a) bring the study of animals and society into new arenas, where these issues were not previously addressed,
    b) approach the study of animals and society from a novel perspective, or using novel teaching methods,
    c) provide exposure to participants who would not otherwise address academic issues relating to animals and society, or
    d) are tailed to participants whose learning experience will have a direct impact upon animals and /or animal protection. We now call for nominations for all three types of awards for 2005. Nominees may apply for one or more of the awards. The competition is open to courses offered worldwide. The prize money will be given to the institutional department in which the winning course is taught. To nominate a course for the award, follow the instructions below. No special forms are necessary. Canadian veterinarians:
Ensuring the welfare of animals used in research, education and testing in Canada
    By Dr. Ernest D. Olfert
Since the 1960s, in institutions across Canada where animals are used in biomedical research, education and testing, laboratory animal veterinarians have played a central role in the care, well-being and welfare of these animals. Over the years, the laboratory animal veterinarian's role has evolved considerably as a specialty within the practice of veterinary medicine. Statement of Adequate Veterinary Care for experimental animals. What exactly is "laboratory animal medicine"? Laboratory animal veterinarians are hired by universities, pharmaceutical companies, government facilities, and any biomedical research company where animals are used in research. But to answer the question more specifically, our professional association has defined what laboratory animal medicine is in our Statement of Adequate Veterinary Care . Disease control and prevention, diagnostic resources, handling and restraint, anesthesia, analgesia, and euthanasia, surgical and post-surgical care and laboratory animal welfare are all covered. How do you, as a laboratory animal veterinarian, get directly involved in the daily lives of research animals at your institution, and in their welfare?

Why do we need humane education?
Humane education can play an essential part in achieving an outlook based on human ethics and values that can overcome violence, poverty and environmental degradation.
Humane education encourages compassion and respect for people, animals and the environment and recognises interdependence of all living things. It is the basis for respect and understanding for other human beings and all life. Humane education raises the awareness of tomorrow`s consumers about food and farming, and helping to develop the consumer power which will influence food retailers and farmers to switch to animal friendly and sustainable farming methods. Brief overview and future objectives
It is for these reasons that the CIWF Trust supports various organisations around the world that carry out local humane education programmes. We support the production of national versions of our educational resources initiatives to include animal welfare in the school curriculum, organise school debates and student contests for various age groups on farm animal welfare and conferences for decision makers, teachers and curriculum developers around the world.

All sentient beings deserve to be free from pain. There are very easy things people can do every day that would eliminate unnecessary suffering for animals. Ask yourself if what you are doing hurts animals. If so, ask yourself if there is a better way that is cruelty-free.
Here are some examples of simple things you can do to help animals:
    1. Go vegetarian.
    2. Only buy products not tested on animals.
    3. Don't wear fur or leather.
    4. Adopt your next pet from an animal shelter - not a pet store.
