Animal Welfare League of Benzie County, Inc.
Michigan, USA Serving the animals and people of Benzie County since 1977
Home
The Animal Welfare League of Benzie County is a non-profit organization incorporated under Michigan Law in 1977. The activities of the League are supervised by 4 officers and a 6-member Board of Directors and are implemented entirely by volunteers. Funding is provided by membership fees, donations, memorials, canisters placed with local businesses, pancake breakfast, and yearly raffle, etc. All meetings of the Animal Welfare League of Benzie County are held at the Benzie Animal Shelter, U.S. 31, Beulah the first Wednesday of every month, 7 P.M. April through November.
WHAT WE DO:
NEUTER-SPAY : Overpopulation in terms of the sheer volume of suffering it causes, is one of the most serious issues in the field of animal protection. To help curb the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens in Benzie County we offer a twice yearly neuter-spay service whereby pet owners who find veterinary fees unaffordable are given financial assistance. The shelter covers 50% of surgery costs for shelter adoptees. EMERGENCY MEDICAL : To animals found sick or injured, the League provides emergency medical treatment until the owner can be located. Whenever possible, unclaimed animals are restored to health and offered for adoption.

Animal Welfare Position Statements
(Current as of June 2005) Table of Contents GUIDING PRINCIPLES Top The AVMA has a long-term concern for, and commitment to, the welfare, humane treatment, and care of animals. Consequently, the AVMA develops position statements for use by members of the profession, and to provide information for the general public, that address the well being of animals. Current scientific knowledge, professional judgment, and ethical, philosophical, and moral values inherent to the veterinary profession provide the basis for these positions.
The AVMA encourages all veterinarians to offer their time and special expertise to promote animal welfare. This may include the following:
  • Playing a key role in the development of guidelines and standards that ensure proper stewardship of animals, Providing high quality medical care of animals, and Participating in educational efforts aimed at promoting the well being of animals.
The Animal Welfare Committee will continue to monitor, study, and make recommendations on animal welfare issues, and the AVMA will take positions where there is adequate scientific basis and where veterinary medicine has a role.

SOL and the KITTENS One of the great things about working with animals is that every so aften a truly heart-warming story comes along to counter-balance all those cases of neglect, abuse, and abandonment. This one concerns a cat we named Sol, rescued by a young local boy from the bottom of a pit latrine. He was dehydrated and badly malnourished, and his whiskers had been cut (in Guatemala, folk wisdom says that cats with cut whiskers will not stray), The quicklime in the latrine had burnt all the fur off his paws. He looked bad, and smelled worse. We put him in the downstairs bathroom, and slowly he recovered over a period of a few weeks. Then our gardener found 3 kittens in a cardboard box, just sitting there by the side of the Pan American highway. So hey – what’s the guy going to do but pick up the box and bring it up to Hound Heights?

elcome to the official website for the Korea Animal Protection Society (KAPS) and its sister organization International Aid for Korean Animals (IAKA) . KAPS and IAKA are both Korean organizations dedicated to promoting animal welfare protection in Korea through education, stricter animal cruelty laws and the continued development of the KAPS Shelter. We are Koreans who have been working for over 15 years on behalf of Korean animals by upholding Korea's true values and traditions to create a more compassionate and just society. The plight of companion animals in South Korea (dogs and cats) is an especially urgent and neglected cause that we have chosen to focus most of all our energies upon these past decades. We strongly feel that the protection of companion animals in South Korea is an important foundation for the protection and welfare of all animals. That is why KAPS and IAKA have been committed to ending the dog and cat meat trade, teaching compassion towards animals, and enforcing strong animal protection laws in Korea. KAPS and IAKA were founded by Sunnan and Kyenan Kum, both sisters, who were born and raised in Korea. Growing up, they were inspired by their father who cared deeply for animals and was an herbal-medicine doctor. He believed in Korea's true dietary traditions for living a healthy and well-balanced life. Unfortunately, throughout Korea's history there have been far too many hardships, so that much of Korea's wildlife and wilderness disappeared by the 20th century. However, even during desperate times the consumption of dogs was never a dietary tradition in Korea. In the past, it was practiced by only a few people purely to avoid starvation like in almost every part of the world. Then dogs began to be consumed by a few older men for mythical health benefits regarding virility and sometimes for the frail and sick. It was just one of many obscure and marginal tonics that were different from Korea's common dietary traditions.
