Dog lovers don red and black ribbons for breed

For more information, Patti L. Strand, (503) 761-1139; naia@involved.com

Portland, Oregon: The National Animal Interest Alliance urges dog lovers everywhere to wear red and black ribbons to show support for responsible dog ownership and opposition to Germany's breed bans and restrictions.
Citing dog training as a key element of responsible dog ownership and the sensible alternative to breed-specific laws, NAIA extends the red-and-black ribbon solidarity campaign to cities and towns all over America, especially where breed-specific bans have been proposed or already passed into law.

Rescue in Cyberspace
Welcome to the rewarding world of pet rescue!
Pet rescue is a growing private grassroots movement to rehome unwanted or abandoned companion animals. Volunteers working in organized groups or as individuals help take the load off animal shelters and lower euthanasia rates by providing foster homes, medical care, and placement services for homeless pets. Rescue services exist for most common pet animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, reptiles, horses, potbellied pigs, and even some farm animals. Most rescue volunteers are specialists, concentrating their energy and expertise on particular breeds or types of pets. Most dog rescue services, for example, specialize in one breed of dog. Reputable rescue services provide:
  • foster care for adoptable pets until suitable new homes can be found pre-adoption medical care such as spaying or neutering, vaccinations and treatment of injuries or illnesses. temperament testing to ensure the animal is appropriate for placement in a new home and to match it with an adopter that's well-suited for it.

    DOG celebrates 10 years
Changes in canine medicine, training, laws highlight the decade
    Introduction
In February 1991, we rolled out the first edition of Dog Owner’s Guide, 16 pages of articles and ads featuring the Labrador Retriever on the front page and articles on training, veterinary medicine, the West Highland White Terrier, dog sledding, a group profile on sighthounds, and information on shelters and adoptions. In July, 1995 we established this website with 65 pages. Now we has more than 350 pages, two million visits and five million page views a year. DOG has changed over the years, but not nearly as dramatically as advances in three areas we cover: veterinary medicine, dog training, and animal control laws. Ten years ago biological controls for fleas and ticks were almost unheard of; orthopedic surgery, canine cancer research and genetic research were in their infancies; alternative medicine was scorned; behavior modification was seldom considered as a problem-solving tool; and few dollars were directed towards research into canine diseases. Today veterinarians have better anesthetics and diagnostic tools; chemotherapy and radiology for cancer treatments; drugs for diseases common to older dogs; and more sophisticated treatments for dozens of diseases and injuries. There are more specialists in surgery, internal medicine, animal behavior, orthopedics, eye diseases, dentistry, and other areas, and more clinics practicing general veterinary medicine. Pharmaceutical firms have developed flea and tick controls that don’t involve bathing or dusting a pet with toxic chemicals and have fine-tuned heartworm prevention protocols so that only the necessary doses can be given.
