166. Operant Conditioning, Part 2
animal trainers will often create a special secondary reinforcer they call a bridge. Use a positive reinforcement to train an animal to do something.
http://www.wagntrain.com/OC/Part2.htm
An Animal Trainer's Introduction To
Operant and Classical Conditioning: Part Two Stacy Braslau-Schneck, MA Return to Part One Positive Reinforcement This is possibly the easiest, most effective consequence for a trainer to control (and easy to understand, too!). Positive reinforcement means starting or adding Something Good, something the animal likes or enjoys. Because the animal wants to gain that Good Thing again, it will repeat the behavior that seems to cause that consequence. Examples of positive reinforcement: The dolphin gets a fish for doing a trick. The worker gets a paycheck for working. The dog gets a piece of liver for returning when called. The cat gets comfort for sleeping on the bed. The wolf gets a meal for hunting the deer. The child gets dessert for eating her vegetables. The dog gets attention from his people when he barks. The elephant seal gets a chance to mate for fighting off rivals. The child gets ice cream for begging incessantly. The toddler gets picked up and comforted for screaming. The dog gets to play in the park for pulling her owner there. The snacker gets a candy bar for putting money in the machine. Secondary positive reinforcers and Bridges A primary positive reinforcer is something that the animal does not have to learn to like. It comes naturally, no experience necessary. Primary R+s usually include food, often include sex (the chance to mate), the chance to engage in instinctive behaviors, and for social animals, the chance to interact with others.

HURR ICANE KATRINA DISASTER RELIEF for PETS and PET OWNERS!! Animals at Heart has been advised to wait 3-4 weeks and then we will be traveling to pick up animals from the affected areas and bring them back for fostering and/or permanent placement. We thank everyone for their generous outpouring of support, but we still need more help! Our plan of assistance has now branched out to cover three critical areas - 1) we are providing help for evacuees whose pets need fostering; 2) we are expecting to receive anywhere from 60 to 100 animals from the affected areas; and 3) we are expecting to bring back another 40 to 60 animals that will also need homes. The animals we are helping were pulled off of rooftops and out of the water, and many of them survived even though their families did not. We need crates, collars, leashes, and towels! Most importantly we need foster homes, permanent homes to place them into, and monetary donations to cover vet costs! Help us spread the word Nationwide! Get on your mailing lists, chatrooms, users groups, and discussion forums online. Tell everyone you know that Animals at Heart is desperately seeking resources to help supply the hurricane survivors once they are reunited with their pets and to help care for and place animals who were orphaned by the storm. Animal trainer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
An animal trainer is a person who trains animals to perform specific acts in response to conditions or stimuli. Training may be for the purpose of companionship, detection, protection, or entertainment. An animal trainer will usually use the control of food or other rewards desired by the animal to condition to the animal to respond in a desired way. Generally, animals are selected for training to make maximum advantage of their natural attributes, sometimes far in excess of those of humans. For example, the very sensitive olfactory (sense of smell) abilities make dogs excellent candidates to train for hunting or search and rescue functions. Seeing eye dogs , and other types of service dogs , are carefully trained to utilize both their sensory skills and the protective instincts of dogs (as pack animals) to bond with a human and help that person to offset a disability in daily life. The use of service animals, especially dogs, is an every-growing field, with wide range of special adaptations. Organizations such as the American Humane Association monitor the training and use of animals such as those used in the entertainment industry. The

About Hearing Dogs
HEARING DOGS
Hearing Dogs assist deaf and hard of hearing individuals by alerting them to a variety of household sounds such as a door knock or doorbell, alarm clock, oven buzzer, telephone, baby cry, name call or smoke alarm. Dogs are trained to make physical contact and lead their deaf partners to the source of the sound. Hearing Dogs are generally mixed breeds acquired from animal shelters and are small to medium in size. Prior to formal audio response training, the younger adoptees are raised and socialized by volunteer puppy raisers. Hearing Dogs are identified by an orange collar and leash and/or vest.
