The study of live vertebrate animals is an integral part of Yale University's research and teaching missions. Yale falls under the authority of the Animal Welfare Act and receives Public Health Service (PHS) support for research and/or teaching involving live vertebrate animals. Therefore, the University must operate a program that includes a properly functioning Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The IACUC is guided by the U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research and Training The IACUC forms the foundation for effective self-regulation of animal care and use and is responsible for reviewing all protocols involving live vertebrate animals, ensuring compliance with federal regulations, inspecting animal facilities and laboratories and overseeing training and educational programs. The overall role of the IACUC is to ensure the humane and sensitive care and use of animals. The IACUC also provides assistance to investigators in fulfilling their obligation to plan and conduct animal experiments in accord with the highest scientific, humane, and ethical principles.

New from DOGTORS Research! The original BREAK-AWAY Thera-Leash for therapy dogs working with patients. This leash design allows the patient to 'walk' the dog, while the overall control is maintained by the team handler. This prevents the dog from pulling the patient regardless of what the dog or patient does. This is a necessary tool for those who work with therapy or with other patients or residents. Best of all, this break-away Thera-Leash is produced directly at DOGTORS and is available for $5. It is easy to use, works with all leads, collars and halters. It attaches in less than a second, and the easy-to-follow instructions are included.

New Age Animal Training
Innovation Or Marketing Strategy?

Recently being promoted has been a different way of approaching our training animal friends both in the domestic and exotic animal realm. Unfortunately, it is not a new approach at all and although what is being taught is a useful tool, it does not treat our animal friends with a holistic attitude nor does it use some of the vital skills and information about those animals as individuals or as a species or breed that have been gathered over the last hundred or so years. The "Click and Reward" method or the "Operant Conditioning" methods currently being promoted are useful. Probably their best use is that they can teach even the most unskilled owner or client how to begin to work with an animal successfully. Unfortunately, the nuances or trust bond of that training still remains elusive to most people. "Operant Conditioning", is a form of training that relies on food reward. Behavior is shaped slowly and systematically. Ideally food reward is immediately reduced resulting in higher response and criteria of behavior. So, an animal originally rewarded for a "Sit" is given different parameters surrounding the "Sit". For instance, now it will be the fastest, or the straightest, and perhaps a longer "Sit" with more distance from the trainer. The general public is probably familiar with this method as used with marine mammals in oceanariums. In the 1950's Marineland of the Pacific did shows and other work with those types of animals using operant training. Reading Lads before the Wind, or Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor has given many people the idea to use "Operant Conditioning" as a tool. In domestic animal work this has been called the "Click and Reward" method of dog training. However with the various breed specific traits and personalities of different dogs it should not be used exclusively. If an owner has a dog who is non-responsive in a high stress situation or who has no food drive they will need assistance in other avenues of approaching their problems.

We want our cats to leave some things alone. Ideal "cat persuasion" gives the cat a change of heart, does not harm the cat, and does not cause the cat to be afraid of us.
These hints can help your cat believe that the scowl of the Cat Behavior Gods , not you, takes the fun out of certain things. For instance, the cranky Cat Gods:
  • made the plant taste terrible (Bitter Apple)
  • rained on their parade if they scratch furniture (spray bottle with water
  • made a ruckus if they try to go outside (tin can with pebbles)
  • made the sofa smell terrible (Cat Away spray or vinegar) and the scratching post smell great (rub catnip on it)
...and you just confirm these signs from the Cat Gods with a firm "NO!" Praise costs nothing, pleases your pet, makes you smile, and reinforces good behavior. More Cat Stuff Back to CAWS Home Page Graciously Hosted by ViaWest Internet Services, www.viawest.net

Animal Communicator, Cindy Smith "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." Mohandas Gandhi How often have you wondered what your dog was trying to tell you with those long stares?
Working with an animal communicator allows you to have a two way conversation with your horse, dog , cat, or other animal friend.
One of the ways animals communicate is telepathically. This is simply a mind to mind communication. People have developed verbal and written skills and we've let our telepathic skills diminish. This ability can be rekindled.
In our session, I will give you tips about how to start this type communication yourself.
Telepathic communication gives you a mind-to-mind connection unlimited by geographic location. I work with people and their animals all over the United States, Canada, and Europe.
There are many ways to use a communication session.

THE PANEPINTO MICRO-MINIATURE PIG
We are the originators of the first true Micro/Miniature Pigs, which we have selectively bred for more than 2 decades. No one anywhere has been raising real micro-size pigs longer than our group. While others may claim to have "micro-size pigs," many of those will eventually exceed 80 kg in size. Panepinto Pigs are the real thing. Our work in genetic selection, humane methods and specialized husbandry is well documented and widely published, which a literature search keying on Panepinto will quickly confirm. Our pigs are the world's smallest, maturing at less than 12 kg and reaching a full adult weight under 40 kg. Their small size and exceptionally calm, friendly temperament make them ideal for children's zoos and other specialized applications where hands-on contact is important. Panepinto Pigs
7 months old - 14 kg We deliver all pigs door to door ourselves on deep bedding in air-conditioned comfort, avoiding the hassles of commercial air or ground transport. At delivery we are available for in-person facility review and other hands-on assistance or training if desired. Please contact us for all your Miniature or Micro/miniature pig needs.

T he Center for the Integrative Study of Animal Behavior receives many queries from individuals asking for information about potential careers in the field of animal behavior and about the type of training required. While we do not have the personnel necessary to answer each individual query, we hope you'll find the information offered here a useful starting place. The text below was written by the Education Committee of the Animal Behavior Society . Links to additional resources compiled by CISAB are located at the bottom of the page.
WHAT IS ANIMAL BEHAVIOR?
A nimal behavior is the scientific study of everything animals do, whether the animals are single-celled organisms, insects, birds, mammals, fish, or humans. However, human behavior is more often studied by psychologists, anthropologists, human ethologists, or other social scientists.
T he field of animal behavior is concerned with understanding the causes, functions, development, and evolution of behavior. The causes of behavior include all of the stimuli that affect behavior, whether external (food or predators) or internal (hormones or nervous system changes). The function of behavior include both the immediate effects of behavior on an animal (such as attracting a mate), and the adaptive significance of the behavior in a particular environment (such as huddling together in cold weather). The development of behavior is concerned with the ways in which behavior changes over the lifetime of an animal. The evolution of behavior is concerned with origins of behavior patterns and how these change over generations of animals.

BBC News Magazine
"Hero" squirrels get the close-ups Forty squirrels were trained to crack nuts in the new film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. How?
Even with sophisticated computer-generated technology available, director Tim Burton refused to take any short cuts with the famous Nut Room scene in Roald Dahl's novel. It had to be as life-like as possible, Burton decided, which meant squirrels cracking and sorting nuts on a conveyor belt. In the film, they are seen sitting on stools testing the quality of the nuts until their work is rudely interrupted by one of the humans, in an action they take strong exception to. Some of the squirrels were hand-reared and required bottled milk on set, and others came from squirrel rescues or private homes. Steve Vedmore, an animal trainer from Brynmawr, south Wales, worked for eight weeks on the film.

Adapting Your Dog's Training for Therapy Work - The "Recall"
  • Get your dog used to responding to both verbal commands and gestures "to come";
    • Use lots of encouragement Make gestures very obvious and enthusiastic in the beginning Practice having your dog come to you while you are seated insisting that they come close enough so that you can easily reach out to touch use 'treats' as needed; Do not allow the dog to jump on you. Have the animal sit when they approach you; Work at different distances. Many dogs are not used to doing a recall with a person seated close to them; Recruit someone to help with that person acting as "patient" so that the dog (and you) can get used to working with another person;
