Student Responsibilities
All first-year IDP students, regardless of whether or not they intend to work with animals, are required to attend an Animal Awareness Seminar as part of their orientation to biomedical research. Additional training is required for first-year graduate students who intend to do lab rotations that will involve animal contact. The training schedule has been developed to be compliant with current IACUC and ACS training requirements. Please note that there may be some restrictions on the types of animal research that IDP students can participate in during rotations. Animal training must be completed by the student prior to the beginning of the lab rotation involving animal contact. Copies of all forms, training certificates, e-mail confirmations of completed training, etc . must be turned in to the Office of Graduate Education. Record of all animal training will be maintained with each student's academic records in the Office of Graduate Education, which will then provide the PI's with the training information required for them to add the rotation student to relevant IACUC protocol(s) by addendum for each specific rotation period (see Faculty Responsibilities below).

Training The RSPCA commenced dog obedience classes in Queensland in 1986 with 69 students and their dogs completing the course that year. To date, over 20,000 students have completed courses with the RSPCA Animal Training and Behavioural Centre, now a nationally registered training organization. Highly trained staff continue to develop a range of obedience, agility and fun programs for all ages and levels of experience. In recent years, additional animal training centres have been established throughout Queensland, training an average of 3,500 students each year from “K9 kindergarten” to advanced training. Besides providing training facilities to encourage responsible dog ownership, the centres are involved in many education and community events including Million Paws Walks, World Animal Day, Open Days and the Australian Veterinary Association’s PetPEP program. Dogs and owners feature in “prevent-a-bite” demonstrations, “flyball” and agility courses. Dogs from the animal training program and their owners are always welcome visitors at nursing homes as part of a pet therapy program and also at child care centres. Special programs introduced by the Animal Training Centre include - special training classes for cruelty case dogs to enrich the life of these dogs; home training for dogs and students unable to attend a centre, and special intensive school holiday dog obedience courses for school students and their canine friends. The Society also provides hydrobath services for the public at several of the animal training centres throughout the State.

Dealing with problems and understanding the working of the feline mind.
http://animal.discovery.com/guides/cats/training/problemsintro.html
September 18, 2005 Certain behaviors are deeply rooted in the feline psyche and can't be altered. Chewing Litter Box Problems Scratching Main Menu Behavioral Problems Be realistic in your expectations. Certain behaviors are deeply rooted in the feline psyche and can't be altered. Nighttime romps and furniture climbing, for example, are carryovers from nocturnal hunting and territory surveillance in the wild. Out of respect for the feline nature, you will need to make some accommodations yourself. If your cat makes you up at night, try having a good play session with him before bedtime. Sleep with earplugs until the cat realizes you won't be roused in the middle of the night for an extra feeding. Don't simply scold the cat for scaling curtains and other household items. Satisfy the feline instincts to exercise and to survey the surroundings by investing in a cat tree. Behavior problems aren't as likely to arise if you understand the working of the feline mind. Understanding what underlies certain behavior will help you determine whether you should try conditioning your cat or whether you'll have to settle for changing your home environment or your own conduct. Modifying your cat's behavior will take consistent encouragement or discouragement, most likely a combination of both. Take a gradual approach and be patient, bearing in mind the feline's natural resistance to change.
