Exotic Animal Training and Management, Moorpark College
Have you always had a strong desire to care for animals? Have you been intrigued by the amazing performance of dolphins and killer whales in oceanariums? Do you want to help save wild animals from the threat of extinction? Do you want to teach others to love animals as much as you do? We can help you turn your dreams into reality. The Exotic Animal Training and Management (EATM) Program at Moorpark College is an unique vocational program offering education in the care and training of animals and the presentation of educational shows utilizing animals. Students receive instruction in modern techniques of zoo keeping including nutrition, restraint, and veterinary procedures. A variety of animal training procedures are presented, ranging from techniques applicable for confined zoo animals to methods used in working animals in the movie industry. The human elements of the animal industry are also covered in courses dealing with public relations, fund raising, planning, and supervision. At the college's animal facility, the students are able to put into action practices they have learned in the classroom. The EATM Program was established as a major at Moorpark College in 1974. The animal collection has gradually increased over the years as animals were acquired through donations and breeding loans from major zoos and research centers. This extraordinary collection has included exotic animals ranging from marmosets to an Asian elephant, blue-tongued skinks to alligators, button quail to ostrich.

Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Animal lovers get satisfaction in this occupation, but the work can be unpleasant and physically and emotionally demanding.
  • Most workers are trained on the job, but advancement depends on experience, formal training, and continuing education.
  • Good employment opportunities are expected for most positions; however, keen competition is expected for jobs as zookeepers.
  • Starting salaries are significantly lower than those in many other fields.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Kennel attendants care for pets while their owners are working or traveling out of town. Beginning attendants perform basic tasks, such as cleaning cages and dog runs, filling food and water dishes, and exercising animals. Experienced attendants may provide basic animal healthcare, as well as bathe animals, trim nails, and attend to other grooming needs. Attendants who work in kennels also may sell pet food and supplies, assist in obedience training, help with breeding, or prepare animals for shipping. groomers . Some groomers work in kennels, veterinary clinics, animal shelters, or pet-supply stores. Others operate their own grooming business, typically at a salon, or sometimes by making house calls. Groomers answer telephones, schedule appointments, discuss pets’ grooming needs with clients, and collect information on the pet’s disposition and its veterinarian. Groomers often are the first to notice a medical problem, such as an ear or skin infection, that requires veterinary care.

Vicki Hearne, Animal Trainer and Philosopher
By Elizabeth Hollander
We usually think of people who like animals as being nice, but niceness, with all its connotations of easy, low-stakes, indulgent behavior, is probably the human attribute Vicki Hearne least respected, especially in relation to animals. Most of the time she thought it downright damaging: “It is usually a diet of syrup, bribery, and choked rhetoric, rather than physical abuse, that creates character disorders such as viciousness and megalomania in a dog,” she wrote. “Biting is a response to incoherent authority.” This kind of writing earned Hearne a reputation among her detractors as a harsh trainer (undeserved) and a hothead (an understatement). Vicki Hearne was not nice, and she was certainly not tactful, but she was a uniquely gifted person – one who could both do something – and then talk about doing it, with equal authority, imagination, passion, and rigor. Victoria Elizabeth Hearne was born and reared in Texas, majored in English at the University of California at Riverside, and spent fifteen years in California as a horse and dog trainer and poet. In the early 80s she began to write about animal training, and the kinds of linguistic and philosophical puzzles that such work seemed to her to involve. In her most important work, Adam’s Task: Calling Animals by Name (1986), she attempted to account for the “highly anthropomorphic, morally loaded language” used by most trainers to talk about animals. She brought to bear her considerable academic experience in philosophy, linguistics, and behavioral psychology, disciplines that tabooed ascribing to animals the sorts of moral and intellectual capacities that animal trainers take for granted. In the end Hearn rejected the methods of philosophers and behaviorists; her ideas about training were greatly enlarged by science, linguistics, and most importantly literature.

Laboratory and Classroom Animal Training The following precautions are necessary to protect yourself and your family from disease while working with animals in classes or labs:
  • Gloves should be worn and hands washed after glove removal. Many zoonoses are spread by fecal-oral contamination.  To prevent this, no eating, drinking, applying cosmetics or contact lenses, or smoking is allowed in areas where animals or their excreta are present.  Lab coats, safety glasses, and other personal protective equipment (as indicated by the nature of the exposure) must be worn to prevent the spread of organisms to you or outside the class or lab (i.e., home to your family).  A normal, healthy adult may have only mild symptoms when infected with a zoonotic disease, but the same organisms can be fatal to infants, the elderly, and those with a weakened or suppressed immune system:

Wild Animal Training The following precautions are necessary to protect yourself and your family from disease while working with wild mammals: Gloves should be worn and hands washed after glove removal (and frequently throughout the day). Waterless hand cleaner can be used until soap and clean water are available. Many of the zoonoses are spread by fecal-oral contamination (their excreta into your mouth). To prevent this, don’t eat, drink, apply lip balm or make-up, or smoke while trapping or handling animals, their bedding, cages, or pens. Always wash your hands prior to eating, drinking, or smoking after handling these things. Avoid exposure to, or handling of, sick, dying, or dead animals. Designated protective clothing and shoes should be worn, and these should be bagged until they can be cleaned or laundered (separately) from other clothes. Zoonotic organisms are potentially hazardous to your family members. A normal, healthy adult may have only mild symptoms when infected with a zoonotic disease, but the same organisms can be fatal to infants, the elderly, and those with a weakened or suppressed immune system, such as the elderly, people without spleens, people taking cortisone and other medications, people on chemotherapy or radiation, those with cancer, diabetes, AIDS or renal failure, etc.

Holistic Health Care and
Energetic Healing for Pets
Does your pet have ear mites? As a wellness counselor, I primarily work with people but as an animal lover and one who respects the many gifts our non-human friends bring us, I have often also found myself called to help them during times of imbalance or pain. My approach is two-fold when asked to work with an animal. Of course, I am working to help the beloved pet to regain health and vitality. I have found that three products, above all others, work in the broadest range of conditions and levels of imbalance, pain, and health challenges with animals. They are Intrasound Neutralizer II and Willard Water . In addition to holistic suggestions for helping the animal to heal, I apply energy work and sometimes work in dreamtime with the animal. However, this is not what I consider the most important part of the work. What is even more vital in most cases, unless the animal is dangerously ill, is to bring awareness to the human friend and steward of that animal the fact that no injury or disease is random. If you pet is sick or hurt, there is a spiritual adjustment being made on your behalf and if you want to honor the "medicine", part of the healing involves learning what the imbalance was that required the sacrifice so freely given. This approach is certainly not for everyone. If it resonates, please read the two stories below which are personal experiences, and you can begin to understand the process:

The McGill University Animal Care Committee , in conjunction with the Office of the Vice Principal of Research , offers training in animal use for research and teaching as part of our institution's commitment to animal welfare when there are no alternatives but to include them in projects having scientific merit. Although our institution has been offering training since the 1970s, it is in January 2003, that the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) has made training mandatory for all individuals who are, or intend to, work with animals. This includes all research and teaching personnel from McGill and Affiliated Hospitals: investigators, post-doctoral fellows, research assistants, technicians and students. Everyone listed in an Animal Use Protocol form, is required to successfully pass the THEORY course The participant will need to know the material covered in this Web site and successfully pass a multiple choice test. If training was obtained from another institution, successfully passing the test is sufficient. If handling live animals, the person also needs to successfully pass the
