188. SIT STAY READ! - About SIT STAY READ!
Improves literacy skills and fosters a love of animals by partnering reading assistance dogs with children. Includes training and testing for pet and handler. How it works in Chicago. May not work for all browsers.
http://www.sitstayread.org/About.aspx
SIT STAY READ! is a volunteer reading assistance dog program for children in the Chicago area. Reading aloud is a critical component of early childhood literacy. Children who have difficulty reading have an especially hard time reading aloud in front of peers and adults. This affects their self-esteem as they struggle with a skill their classmates' easily master. SIT STAY READ! allows children to read aloud to specially trained and evaluated therapy dogs. Programs like SIT STAY READ! are showing that children are more likely to interact with an animal than another person. We’re On a Mission Our mission is to improve literacy skills and foster a love of animals by partnering reading assistance dogs with children in our community. During their interaction with the SIT STAY READ! dogs, the children forget their limitations. In addition, even children who are already skilled at reading enjoy reading aloud to the dogs. Dogs provide rapt attention and children can read aloud without fear of criticism or interruption. Children In Low-Income Families Especially at Risk A report funded by the Packard and MacArthur Foundations found that the average child growing up in a middle class family has been exposed to 1,000 to 1,700 hours of one-on-one picture book reading before entering school. The average child growing up in a low-income family has only been exposed to 25 hours of one-on-one reading aloud during this same time period.

Welcome to Gait Haven, specializing in the Tennessee Walking Horse.
Our training program is unique in that we focus on developement of the horse and rider, for show or pleasure. The Tennessee Walking Horse breed evolved from the Narragansett Pacer, Canadian, Morgan, Standardbred, Thoroughbred and American Saddlebred. This resulted in one of the best show and trail riding horses. The TWBEA Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' Exhibitor Association has registered more than 300,000 horses in the United states today. The Tennessee Walker is a gentle good natured horse and comes in a variety of colors. The Walking Horse performs three very distinct gaits: the flat foot walk, running walk and canter. These gaits, all of which are very smooth is what make the Tennessee Walking Horse so famous. The flat foot walk can reach speeds of 4 to 8 miles an hour. With the running walk they can reach speeds of 10 to 20 miles an hour, and the canter is so graceful it has been nicknamed the "Rocking Horse" gait.

Thinking the Way Animals Do
By Temple Grandin, Ph.D.
Department of Animal Science
Colorado State University Western Horseman, Nov. 1997, pp.140-145 Temple Grandin is an assistant professor of animal science at Colorado State University. She is the author of the book Thinking in Pictures. Television appearances include 20/20, CBS This Morning, and 48 Hours. Dr. Grandin has autism, and her experiences have helped her to understand animal behavior. She teaches a course in livestock handling at the university and consults on the design of livestock handling facilities.
Unique insights from a person with a singular understanding.
As a person with autism, it is easy for me to understand how animals think because my thinking processes are like an animal's. Autism is a neurological disorder that some people are born with. Scientists who study autism believe that the disorder is cause d by immature development of certain brain circuits, and over development of other brain circuits. Autism is a complex disorder that ranges in severity from a mild form (such as mine), to a very serious handicap where the child never learns to talk. The m ovie Rain Man depicts a man with a fairly severe form of the disorder. I have no language-based thoughts at all. My thoughts are in pictures, like videotapes in my mind. When I recall something from my memory, I see only pictures. I used to think that everybody thought this way until I started talking to people on how they t hought. I learned that there is a whole continuum of thinking styles, from totally visual thinkers like me, to the totally verbal thinkers. Artists, engineers, and good animal trainers are often highly visual thinkers, and accountants, bankers, and people who trade in the futures market tend to be highly verbal thinkers with few pictures in their minds.
