Disaster Planning Tips for Pets, Livestock and Wildlife The Humane Society of the United States Offers Disaster Planning Tips for Pets, Livestock and WildlifeWhether it's a large-scale natural catastrophe or an unforeseen emergency that causes you to leave your home temporarily, everyone's family can benefit from having a household evacuation plan in place before disaster strikes. Every disaster plan must include your pets! The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) offers the following tips to pet owners designing an emergency safety plan:
  • If you evacuate your home, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS BEHIND! Pets most likely cannot survive on their own; and if by some remote chance they do, you may not be able to find them when you return.
    For public health reasons, many emergency shelters cannot accept pets. Find out which motels and hotels in your area allow pets well in advance of needing them. Include your local animal shelter's number in your list of emergency numbers they might be able to provide information concerning pets during a disaster.
    Make sure identification tags are up to date and securely fastened to your pet's collar. If possible, attach the address and/or phone number of your evacuation site. If your pet gets lost, his tag is his ticket home. Make sure you have a current photo of your pet for identification purposes.

    Rabies Introduction
    Although rabies among humans is rare in the United States, every year approximately 16,000-39,000 persons receive postexposure prophylaxis. To appropriately manage potential human exposures to rabies, the risk of infection must be accurately assessed. Administration of rabies postexposure prophylaxis is a medical urgency, not a medical emergency, but decisions must not be delayed. Systemic prophylactic treatments occasionally are complicated by adverse reaction, but these reactions are rarely severe. Data on the safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of active and passive rabies immunization have come from both human and animal studies. Although controlled human trials have not been performed, extensive field experience from many areas of the world indicates that postexposure prophylaxis wound treatment, passive immunization, and vaccination is uniformly effective when appropriately applied. However, rabies has occasionally developed among humans when key elements of the rabies postexposure prophylaxis regimens were omitted or incorrectly administered (see Treatment Outside the United States).

    by Daniel Simberloff Since our country was first colonized, several thousand foreign plant and animal species have established themselves in the U.S., as have hundreds of animal and plant disease agents, or pathogens. Many of these speciessuch as crop plants and some game animalsare beneficial, while otherssuch as most pets and ornamental plantsare harmless amenities. At the same time, some 15 percent of these interlopers have become invaders, causing widespread problems that can prove serious and exceedingly costly. They can devastate farms and forests, impede waterways, foul lakes and ponds, affect human health, and invade natural areas and replace native species. Introduced species cause disasters that one would never have foreseen. It might not seem surprising that the spread of fire-adapted, exotic plants that burn easily has increased the frequency and severity of fires, to the detriment of property, human safety, and native plants and animals. But would one have guessed that, in 1936, the town of Bandon, Oregon would be destroyed and eleven citizens killed by a fire propagated by gorse , a highly flammable plant introduced, seventy years earlier, from Europe? Or that dense, flammable plants such as

      Animal Control and Your Rights Every person has the right to protect any one of his rights which he feels has been violated. In defending himself against the tyranny of government, no matter how slight, he is preserving the rights of all of us, usually at great cost in money, effort and time. How do we defend these rights? The first step is knowing what those rights are.
        First things first, have no documentation stating they are wolf mixes. Such as vet records, city licensee's etc. Do not tell everyone they have wolf in them. Although there are no definitive tests that can prove wolf content, one's owns words can be used against them in court. Having wolf paraphernalia no more proves you have a wolfdog than having matches proves you are an arsonist. Be sure to know your local ordinances on animal control. You can gain these at your local library and/or the city/county clerks office. Read them, understand them, and you could even go as far as checking the constitutionality of them. Such as, do they provide for a hearing before seizure? One of our basic constitutional rights is the right of "Due Process" under the 14th amendment.
          No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

    All states have laws that prohibit cruelty to horses and other animals. Every state makes it a crime to engage in certain cruel acts toward animals. Most states permit the government to seize and destroy or sell an animal that has been found to have been cruelly treated. Many states give a special role to the Humane Society or Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Those states make officers of these private associations law enforcement officers, empowered to seek and execute search and arrest warrants, search private property for evidence of cruelty to animals and arrest persons whom they have reason to believe have committed an offense of cruelty to an animal. Many states have recently enacted legislation to protect research facilities from trespass to "liberate" animals in their custody. Other states have increased the punishments for abuse of police or service animals.
