Animal Rescue Groups Will Move Last of 39 Rescued Tigers Just Days Following Guilty Verdict For Man Responsible For Abuse; After Nearly Two Years of Care by The Fund for Animals, Tragic Story of Abused Tigers Has Happy Ending COLTON, CA February 25 The nearly two-year rescue effort of dozens of big cats from the worst cruelty case in history, which sparked international attention, ends this week as the final seven tigers four males and three females are moved to their permanent new home on Saturday, Feb. 26. The announcement was made by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), The Fund for Animals , and Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). The seven tigers will join 32 others at PAWS' ARK2000 sanctuary in San Andreas, Calif., where the once abused and malnourished cats will now live healthy and safe lives with trees, dens, and swimming pools. The final move comes just days after the verdict finding the man responsible for those conditions, John Weinhart, guilty of 56 counts in the tiger abuse case. According to Michael Markarian, executive vice president for External Affairs of The Humane Society of the United States, and president of The Fund for Animals, "We are gratified that the jury in the tiger abuse case took the animal cruelty crimes very seriously, and found Weinhart guilty of 56 counts, including 14 felonies. This verdict sends a strong message across the country that cruelty to animals will not be tolerated, whether the animals are wild or domestic, housecats or tigers. We hope that strong penalties are imposed when sentencing occurs on March 22."

Local shelter medicine experts to offer animal care expertise at shelters affected by 2004 tsunami
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Michael Bannasch, a registered veterinary technician and coordinator of the Shelter Medicine Program at the University of California, Davis and Richard Bachman, a Santa Rosa veterinarian with more than 20 years of shelter medicine expertise will visit the Visakha SPCA animal shelter in Visakhapatnam and the Blue Cross of India animal shelter in Chennai. Both of these facilities are located in coastal communities affected by the tsunami UAN is the primary sponsor of the mission, which was organized by the Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights (AVAR) , a Davis-based nonprofit organization with approximately 3,000 veterinary members throughout the United States. UAN is funding all travel expenses and the cost of certain medical equipment and supplies. In January of this year, UAN and AVAR collaborated to send two veterinarians to India in the immediate aftermath of the tsunami, whereupon they realized the shelters needed additional help to improve their animal care procedures, sanitation standards, surgical protocols and the quality of their supplies and equipment.

NEW! - Animal Control Snake Removal
Procedure - Since snakes are so common in Georgia and complaints can be numerous, Athens-Clarke County Animal Control typically responds only to complaints of snakes within the living area of a residence if the complainant currently sees the snake. Most of the time, if the complainant is unable to keep an eye on the snake, the officers cannot find it upon arrival. Animal Control also responds to complaints of venomous snakes whether indoors or outdoors. However, for non-venomous snakes outside a residence, callers are advised to leave the snake alone or call a licensed wildlife removal company.

Forest Health Technology Enterprise Team. FHTET-2003-08 A biological invasion of non-native plants is spreading into our nations' fields, pastures, forests, wetlands and waterways, natural areas, and right-of-ways. Variously referred to as exotic, nonnative, alien, noxious, or non-indigenous weeds, invasive plants impact native plant and animal communities by displacing native vegetation and disrupting habitats as they become established and spread over time. Drawing on recent publications by the USDA Forest Service, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA APHIS PPQ and the Southeast Exotic Pest Plant Council, this web site covers identification characteristics, distribution, and control options for 97 tree, shrub, vine, grass, fern, forb, and aquatic plant species that are invading the eastern United States. For each species, a menu of control options is presented, including mechanical treatments, specific herbicide prescriptions, and, for selected species, recent advances in biological control. While this is not an official list of "invasive" plants throughout the eastern United States, it includes Federal Noxious Weeds and those listed by State regulatory agencies, pest plant councils and other organizations. Some of the plants on this list are often found in ornamental plantings and landscapes. In fact, many non-native plants introduced for horticultural and agricultural use now pose a serious ecological threat in the absence of their natural predators and control agents. This publication will aid landowners, foresters, resource managers, and the general public in becoming familiar with invasive plants in their area to help protect our environment from the economic and ecological impacts of these biological pollutants.

Compendium of Animal Rabies Prevention and Control, 2000 The National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians (NASPHV) is pleased to provide the 2000 version of the Compendium of Animal Rabies Prevention and Control for distribution to practicing veterinarians and officials in animal control, public health, wildlife management, and agriculture in each state. Please note the addition of “prevention” to the title, a change that the Compendium Committee members and consultants believe is a more accurate reflection of the purpose for the document. This preface points out other changes that were made in the document this year and summarizes some of the discussions that took place during the Compendium meeting.
Compendium Changes
In Part I: B. Vaccine Selection, a change was made to address the issue of vaccines licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) between Compendium meetings. The Compendium document lists all rabies vaccines licensed by USDA and marketed in the United States so by default any vaccines licensed between meeting of the Compendium Committee should be considered part of the list. In Part I: C. Route of Inoculation, the reference to one site in the thigh was removed and replaced with the generic statement, “in accordance with the specifications of the product label or package insert” because each vaccine has its own recommendation. Information regarding where to report adverse reactions or vaccine failures was added to this section. The Compendium members and consultants believe that these data are critical to assessing vaccine efficacy and safety in the field and urge practitioners to be conscientious about reporting.

National Studies Reveal Why Pet Owners Take Animals To Shelters And How Many Find New Homes; Statistics Point to Epidemic
Note to editors: Statistical breakdowns of four regional surveys that characterize pet owners who surrendered their animals to shelters in 1994 are available through Dr. M.D. Salman at Colorado State University. The four regional surveys were conducted in Colorado; Kentucky and Tennessee; New Jersey and New York; and California and explain the main reasons why pet owners relinquished their pets to shelters in those areas. Charts and tables of the national shelter statistics survey are available by calling (970) 491-6432. FORT COLLINS America's mobile society is taking its toll on the nation's pets and often at the cost of the pets' lives, according to a pair of national studies coordinated by Colorado State University. The two studies, conducted by Colorado State veterinary epidemiologist Dr. M.D. Salman and sponsored by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, reveal that moving and other lifestyle issues were the main reasons given by pet owners when surrendering their animals to shelters. But the majority of those pets64 percentare euthanized instead of adopted into new homes. The studies also found that the majority of pet owners who surrender their animals to shelters are under 30 years of age and that more dogs are taken to shelters than cats and all other animals combined.

Animal Shelter Professionals from 11 States to Travel to Buffalo for HSUS Training Program
The Humane Society of the United States
Friday, 25 July 2003 The HSUS is bringing an innovative training program designed to help animals in shelters to Buffalo next week. The SPCA Serving Erie County will host The HSUS' second Pets for Life™ Regional Training Center program July 28 through August 1. This training is designed to give animal shelters the tools to keep people and their pets together for life by addressing the reasons why people give up their pets. The program covers animal behavior problems, human health issues (e.g. allergies to pets), restrictions in rental housing, unrealistic expectations and changes in the family lifestyle. The course at The SPCA Serving Erie County will consist of training for 45 new students as well as 15 students who have already received some training through this program. The graduate students, who will be in attendance for the entire five days, will learn to teach a three-day basic animal behavior course to other animal care and control professionals throughout their regions. New students take a three-day class from July 30 through August 1. Kerry Muhovich from the Dumb Friends League in Denver, Colorado will be the course instructor. Students for this training course represent animal shelters from Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, Virginia, Maryland and New York. The first regional training program was held in April at the Humane Society of Missouri in St. Louis. This program and other training efforts are a key component of The HSUS' Pets for Life program, which is giving pet owners the answers to many common pet problems.
