The two studies, conducted by Colorado State veterinary epidemiologist Dr. M.D. Salman and sponsored by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, reveal that moving and other lifestyle issues were the main reasons given by pet owners when surrendering their animals to shelters. But the majority of those pets64 percentare euthanized instead of adopted into new homes.
The studies also found that the majority of pet owners who surrender their animals to shelters are under 30 years of age and that more dogs are taken to shelters than cats and all other animals combined.
"Euthanasia of domestic pets in the United States is an epidemic," Salman said. "These studies give us the first glimpse of why so many pets are entering shelters and what happens once they are surrendered by their owners."
About 1,000 shelters in the United States responding as part of Shelter Statistics Survey accepted an estimated 4 million pets each year in 1994, 1995 and 1996. Of those sent to the reporting shelters that participated in the study, about 64 percentor 8.2 million petswere euthanized.
The survey also revealed that, on average, 42.5 percent of pets that entered animal shelters were submitted by animal control authorities and nearly 30 percent were surrendered by their owners. The remainder were relinquished by other sources. Twenty-four percent, or 3 million, of the animals taken to shelters over the three-year period were adopted by new families. Only 10 percent, or 1.2 million, were reclaimed by their owners.

Where to Find a Dog?
Animal Shelters
Animal shelters are excellent places to find a new pet. Shelters are usually run by local governments, or by caring citizens who form private non-profit groups. Shelters can be found under many different names, such as: humane societies, animal protection leagues, the pound, the cruelty society, animal care and control, foster homes, etc. There are several national organizations that help to promote the good work that is done on behalf of abandoned pets:
With the very real problem of pet overpopulation in the United States, shelters are bulging with large numbers of cats and dogs that are in need of a good home. These are animals that have been turned-in by their owners for one reason or another, or have entered as strays, with no one to claim them. Unfortunately, with limited space and resources, the majority of pets that enter a shelter must be put to death unless they are adopted by a new owner. Certain shelters are able to stretch their resources and have a "no-kill" policy in place, but tragically most facilities are unable to maintain this type of policy.
The good news is that you can make a real difference by bringing a shelter pet into your home. The cost is usually minimal, typically ranging from $15 to $75. The fees may already include shots and/or neutering. Sometimes the first veterinarian visit is also included in the fee, and if the pet hasn't already been spayed or neutered, you will be strongly advised or required to do so.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ADOPTING A PET FROM SHELTERS/ FOSTER GROUPS
In virtually every community across the United States, public and private shelters are filled with animals. Some are lost pets whose owners can't be found. Others are pets whose owners can no longer keep them. There are puppies, kittens, older animals, mixed breeds, and purebreds, as well as other types of pets available for adoption. They all have at least one thing in common. Each is hoping for a permanent and loving home. Unfortunately, for most of these animals there will be no new home. Why? The answer is simple: there are too many animals and not enough homes. The solution to this tragic problem starts with you. When you're ready to add a pet to your family, visit your local animal shelter. Questions most frequently asked of shelter staff: Are animals healthy and well-adjusted?

A new focus and time to say "Good-Bye"..... Rescuers.com was created in an era when it was only the minority of rescue groups and shelters that were privileged to have web pages. The public, seeking to adopt a purebred dog, often had great difficulty locating breed rescue groups. I had first-hand experience in 1997 when looking for rescues in my own search to adopt a Golden Retriever. In this quest for a golden of my own, Rescuers.com was born. At it's origin, the site was dedicated to southern California shelters and rescues only, but soon expanded to include the entire state! Over 1,000 rescues and 250 animal shelters were included in the directory, always free of charge. Since Rescuers.com's

The percentage of CB herps available today dwarfs what we had just ten years ago, and is already making up a significant proportion of herps sold in pet shops. If you add to that the number of offspring of stray and abandoned animals, the total becomes even more staggering. Every year, between 8 and 12 million animals enter shelters in the United States. Some 4 to 6 million of these animals are destroyed because there are not enough homes for them. Some people refuse to spay or neuter their pet because they mistakenly think that it would be nice for their pet to have puppies or kittens. But what they don't realize is that each responsible home that is found for these puppies and kittens means one less home that is available for the thousands of shelter animals that are waiting to be adopted. Every day, animal shelters across the United States are forced to destroy thousands of animals for lack of responsible homes.

What to do if Your Cat or Dog is Missing
Contact the Animal Control Department as soon as possible and leave your name, address, home phone number, work phone number, and a description of your animal.
Remember, you are your pet's best friend. Provide identification. If your pet ever does get loose, the license can help ensure a safe return. A cat or dog picked up and placed in the City Animal Control Impound Facility that is not wearing a current license is deemed unowned. An unowned animal or "stray" is held for 72 hours (three days) and is then open for adoption. Note: Over 12 million cats and dogs were turned in to animal shelters last year. Only one in ten found a home. If the animal is not adopted at this time, the animal then undergoes a "painless death" (euthanasia).

Significant Points
  • Animal lovers get satisfaction in this occupation, but the work can be unpleasant and physically and emotionally demanding.
  • Most workers are trained on the job, but advancement depends on experience, formal training, and continuing education.
  • Good employment opportunities are expected for most positions; however, keen competition is expected for jobs as zookeepers.
  • Starting salaries are significantly lower than those in many other fields.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Kennel attendants care for pets while their owners are working or traveling out of town. Beginning attendants perform basic tasks, such as cleaning cages and dog runs, filling food and water dishes, and exercising animals. Experienced attendants may provide basic animal healthcare, as well as bathe animals, trim nails, and attend to other grooming needs. Attendants who work in kennels also may sell pet food and supplies, assist in obedience training, help with breeding, or prepare animals for shipping. groomers . Some groomers work in kennels, veterinary clinics, animal shelters, or pet-supply stores. Others operate their own grooming business, typically at a salon, or sometimes by making house calls. Groomers answer telephones, schedule appointments, discuss pets’ grooming needs with clients, and collect information on the pet’s disposition and its veterinarian. Groomers often are the first to notice a medical problem, such as an ear or skin infection, that requires veterinary care.
