2005 Fund Raiser - We need money NOW! Saga Humane Society buys land - Building project on the horizon! Another milestone was reached on Monday, June 13th, as Saga Humane Society handed over a check to purchase the land that houses their temporary animal shelter. A team of Saga directors was present for the land sale: Ramon Nuñez represented Mr. Richard Headrick (owner of Ramons Village Resort), while Alberto Villanueva Jr., represented Saga; Chairperson Eileen Jamison and Vice Chairperson Mary Hawthorne signed on behalf of the Humane Society for the property. A little over a year ago, Headrick offered the use of San Pedro Lot #745 to the Society. Soon after, work began on the shelter, which was established to house the many homeless dogs of San Pedro Town. On May 21st, 2004, nine dogs entered the gates of Fort Dog . Today, there are 20 dogs and puppies currently awaiting adoption at the site. Three irregular-sized lots were purchased, which sit on the northeast side of the airstrip fence, just west of the Island Supermarket. According to the Chairperson, the purchase of land has been a priority since Sagas inception in 1999, but it has been on hold for several years because of financial challenges and the ideal location. As soon as the land was offered for sale, directors went in search of funding and found a private sponsor who generously offered them a low-interest loan. Now that land is secured, the next phase will be a building project to relocate the Saga Society Veterinary Clinic.

Malta: a Small Island with a Big Heart
International Animal Rescue (Malta)
IVU News 2-97
The Malta branch of International Animal Rescue has achieved both national and international recognition. At home, their concerns have ranged from opposition to hunting and shooting to protection of marine mammals and the investigation of illegal imports and inadequate sanctuaries. Abroad, they have participated in international campaigns and have spent a lot of time sharing information and know-how with groups as far afield as Peru, Japan, the United States and Cyprus. Such has been the progress achieved that the society was chosen to co-ordinate arrangements for a film about birds in Malta as part of the popular UK television series, Absolutely Animals. A major problem has been the islands position on a number of bird migration routes and the appalling losses caused by shooting and netting vast numbers of birds. The situation has been exacerbated by the new Governments relaxation of the regulations after only three years in operation. The virtual doubling of the number of species allowed to be trapped and of the period during which wild birds may be killed has meant that vast numbers of birds are being killed just before the breeding season so that populations cannot make up their numbers. While the stringent regulations of 1993 allowed 203 days shooting per year, the new amendments allow an incredible 356 days, resulting in year-long carnage and considerable damage to species numbers.

Compendium of Animal Rabies Prevention and Control, 2000 The National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians (NASPHV) is pleased to provide the 2000 version of the Compendium of Animal Rabies Prevention and Control for distribution to practicing veterinarians and officials in animal control, public health, wildlife management, and agriculture in each state. Please note the addition of “prevention” to the title, a change that the Compendium Committee members and consultants believe is a more accurate reflection of the purpose for the document. This preface points out other changes that were made in the document this year and summarizes some of the discussions that took place during the Compendium meeting.
Compendium Changes
In Part I: B. Vaccine Selection, a change was made to address the issue of vaccines licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) between Compendium meetings. The Compendium document lists all rabies vaccines licensed by USDA and marketed in the United States so by default any vaccines licensed between meeting of the Compendium Committee should be considered part of the list. In Part I: C. Route of Inoculation, the reference to one site in the thigh was removed and replaced with the generic statement, “in accordance with the specifications of the product label or package insert” because each vaccine has its own recommendation. Information regarding where to report adverse reactions or vaccine failures was added to this section. The Compendium members and consultants believe that these data are critical to assessing vaccine efficacy and safety in the field and urge practitioners to be conscientious about reporting.

The purpose of this Compendium is to provide rabies information to veterinarians, public health officials, and others concerned with rabies prevention and control. These recommendations serve as the basis for animal rabies-control programs throughout the United States and facilitate standardization of procedures among jurisdictions, thereby contributing to an effective national rabies-control program. This document is reviewed annually and revised as necessary. Immunization procedure recommendations are contained in Part I; all animal rabies vaccines licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and marketed in the United States are listed in Part II; Part III details the principles of rabies control.
Part I: Recommendations for Parenteral Immunization Procedures
A. Vaccine Administration
All animal rabies vaccines should be restricted to use by, or under the direct supervision of, a veterinarian.

The mission of the Pet Rock Festival is to provide a venue where animal welfare organizations of all kinds (from those that fight to prevent cruelty in the courts to shelters to rescues to rehabilitation programs) can gather to fuse an even tighter network, and to also get the word out about their programs to the public.
