Animal Rescue, Shelters, Society Sites Page 1 of 6 Can you place a price on friendship? Of course not, but many an animal does pay the price with his life, because of the lack of friendship. I have no problem with responsible breeders, its the hobbyist, and puppy/kitten mills and irresponsible owners I have a problem with. If you are looking for a new family member or just want to find a place to help, you should be able to find it in these pages. These sites include all types of animals from cute little hamsters, to lions. Most site's names indicate the type of animal(s) they work with, if not I try to give you an idea by a simple note next to the name. Since the majority of the groups handle cats and/or dogs, if nothing is noted this may be assumed. Below on this page you will find sites that deal at either a National or International level . Local locations may be found under their state or country. If you know of a group or shelter I have missed, please feel free to send me it's URL.
If your group would like to be listed, but does not have a website click here As of 4/9/99 there were 664 listings, I have now quit counting! However continue to add sites as I learn of them .

Humane shelters provide refuge for lost or unwanted animals.
Humane organizations are committed to ending the suffering of animals. To accomplish this goal, they work to educate the public, push for protective legislation, help enforce anti-cruelty laws, and provide refuge and a second chance for lost or unwanted animals. Some of these organizations are national or even international in scope; others groups are local or regional in nature. Animal Shelters on International Sled Dog Race Receive Pedigree Food for Dogs
Jackson, Wyoming-December 19, 2001 Pedigree ® Food for Dogs, title sponsor of the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race (IPSSSDR), is contributing one year’s worth of dog food to each of the communities on the race route announced Frank Teasley, Race Director. The communities on the 2002 route are Jackson Hole, Dubois, Pinedale, Lander, Evanston/Mountain View, Kemmerer and Alpine. The food is used by the communities as prizes during the festivities surrounding the IPSSSDR, and distributed to local animal shelters.
"We are thrilled to receive the Pedigree pet food contribution," said Corey Rybeck, Jackson Hole Animal Shelter. "We use it at the shelter and the doggies here love it"
The Pedigree brand actively supports a wide range of programs that promote responsible pet ownership and highlight the contributions dogs make to society. Such programs include Homeward Bound, a national pet adoption support program to encourage adoption of the nation’s 12 million homeless animals; the National Association for Search and Rescue; police canine units; and non-profit organizations that train and place service dogs for hearing and visually impaired people.

The communities included along the route are Jackson Hole, Dubois, Pinedale, Lander, Evanston/Mountain View, Kemmerer, Afton/Smoot, and Alpine. "It's wonderful that Pedigree has made this donation," says Corie Rybeck, at Jackson/Teton County Animal Shelter. "The dogs at the shelter always appreciate quality food."
Pedigree joined the International Rocky Mountain Stage Stop Sled Dog Race as title sponsor of the 2000 race. The IPSSSDR, the largest sled dog race in the lower 48 states, is slated for January 29 through February 9, 2000 beginning in Jackson Hole and traveling through 14 Wyoming communities. Founded in 1996 by Iditarod musher Frank Teasley, the IPSSSDR is also known as "Wyoming Pulling Together, The Race to Immunize," due to the event's efforts to promote awareness of the need for children, especially those under age two, to be vaccinated against preventable diseases. Race organizers are working to link the race to the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games as an exhibition or event. For more information on the race, visit the race Website at www.wyomingstagestop.org or call (307) 734-1163.

What The HSUS Does for Shelters
At The Humane Society of the United States, we receive numerous inquiries about our role with local shelters. The HSUS is not a parent organization for local humane societies, animal shelters, or animal care and control agencies. Each is an independent organization, governed by its own bylaws and board of directors (in the case of humane societies), or local ordinances and officials (in the case of animal care and control agencies). Funding for local humane societies largely comes from donations and bequests. Animal care and control programs are generally funded by the local government. While The HSUS does not operate or have direct control over any animal shelter, we do work on the national level to abolish large-scale abuses of animals, employing educational, investigative, and legislative means to eliminate cruelty and promote animal welfare. We produce literature, training materials, and other professional services for their use. We also provide financial assistance to animal shelters in special circumstances such as natural disasters, or through grants for special programs. The vast majority of our assistance to shelters is in the form of training and professional development, publications, program services, and campaigns. Here are some of the programs and services we offer to animal shelters and humane organizations.

19. Pet Essences
Such shelters have a policy of keeping animals until homes are found (with some Visit the international Fund for animal Welfare(UK) homepage.
http://www.floweressences.com.au/pets.htm
Flower essences and the Animal Kingdom:
The animal kingdom responds beautifully to flower essences. Like people, animals experience and exhibit a range of emotions. Many of these can be distressful and unpleasant.
Essences can be easily used for a variety of these emotional difficulties in animals / pets. Flower essences are especially wonderful for animals in that animals often can't analyse or rationalise what they are feeling. Unable to intellectualise their feelings in the way humans do, negative feelings can sometimes stay with them for periods of time, causing acute and chronic problems. Think of the dog who gets a harsh word because his owner has just lost his job and has taken out his anger on his pet.The dog of course isn't to know the cause of his owner's anger, and can find no relief for his/her confusion and hurt. So the hurt just sits with him/her, causing unnecessary anxiety and distress Flower essences help such negative feelings to ease/disappear. So rather then the dog suffering in this way, through the essences, he can be afforded relief. Pets / animals also tend to "sponge" up the mood in their immediate environment eg. yours! They tend to adopt our moods and any negativity they take on can linger. The stress etc they feel can be shifted by flower essences allowing them to remain more resilient to environmental influences.

HSI
... Programs Companion Animal Programs: Asia The rapid increase in the number of uncontrolled and street or “community” dogs which breed freely is a significant problem in developing countries around the world. The constant possibility of rabies outbreak and the cost of rabies treatment in cases of dog bite are serious public health issues. When rabies is present, or wherever international attention is drawn to stray dog problems in a country, the reaction is either to conduct massive extermination campaigns using strychnine poison or to shoot dogs in the street. In North America and Europe, the main approach to problems caused by too many dogs and cats and too few homes, has been to promote some version of “legislate, educate and sterilize.” However these areas of the world are affluent, and have well-developed veterinary professions. In developing countries, there are more strays, fewer resources and limited veterinary training. So there is a need to identify other options which can be adapted to meet the specific needs of any given region. Consequently key objectives of HSI’s companion animal program are to promote the human-animal bond, raise awareness of companion animal issues through humane education and to work with international bodies such as the World Health Organization (WHO) to design and implement effective and humane stray dog control programs.
