Klamath County Animal Control
General Information Why should I purchase a license and have my dog wear it?
  • A lost dog can be identified by the license and brought home.
If you are not home and your dog is impounded, we can notify you.
If a dog bites and has a current rabies shot and license, it can be kept at home for observation, preventing costly impound fees.
If your dog is injured, and needs immediate authorization for medical procedures through a veterinarian, we can run your dog's license and contact you at the emergency number you provided us when you licensed the dog.
If you are traveling, and have a car accident, sometimes the dog is thrown clear, to end up lost in possibly another state. A dog license can be traced from anywhere, at any time. And with the emergency contact number you provided when you licensed the dog, we could contact someone to retrieve your dog.
Failure to license your dog can result in a citation. A license on your dog helps the state regulate the assured compliance of the Rabies Ordinance established for the health and welfare of your community.

Community Services Animal Control Animal Control Ordinance Highlights ... Veterans Service IT'S THE LAW: Sumter County Ordinance 2001-9 requires you to supply your dog with adequate shelter and sufficient water at all times. Chaining a dog to a tree, even in the shade, or leaving a dog in a fenced yard is no substitute for shelter. Failure to provide shelter or water is mistreatment of an animal and may result in your dog being impounded. You, as the owner, will be fined in increasing amounts daily until the violations are corrected. Please be considerate and provide your animal with a dog house to protect him from the sun, excessive heat and those sudden storms that are so common in Florida. Proper shelter is defined as: A structure with a roof, three closed sides and a bottom that protects an animal from the elements. The shelter must be available to the animal at all times, even if the animal doesn't use it. Water/Food: Each dog in your care must daily have clean fresh water, fresh wholesome food in a large bowl or bucket that cannot be turned over. Dog hair is like a fur coat, if the animal gets too hot it can easily suffer from a heat stroke or death if it doesn't have water to cool his system. Never leave a pet in a car even if the windows are left open, temperature can quickly rise and your pet will suffer a heat stroke or death. If the animal looks in distress or it is a deadly situation call 911. It is illegal in the state of Florida to leave your pet in a car.

General Information
The Coweta County Animal Control Department is the responsibility of the Warden of the Coweta County Prison, but day-to-day operations are under the supervision of the Lieutenant. The department has four enforcement officers and two full time secretaries. The day to day operations are handled by a supervisor who answers to the Warden of the Coweta County Prison as the department head.

The department is responsible for enforcing the county's Animal Control Ordinance, sometimes referred to as a "leash law". Citations issued by the enforcement officers are heard by the County Magistrate Court located in the County Administration Building, 22 East Broad Street, Newnan, Georgia 30263. Written warnings are also recorded at the Magistrate Court. Violation of the ordinance is considered a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment and/or a fine.
Presently, the county does not require the licensing of your pet, however, state law and county ordinance do require that your pet must be vaccinated and maintain rabies shots annually.
