FarmAnimalShelters.org is hosted by Farm Sanctuary. Shelter and rescue group listings are provided to facilitate farmed animal rescue and shelter networking. Shelters and rescue groups listed are not sponsored by, affiliated or endorsed by Farm Sanctuary and/or other organizations listed.
Farmed animal shelters vary considerably in their policies, procedures and animal care standards and listing does not imply any shelter adheres to Farm Sanctuary or any other standards of operation. FarmAnimalShelters.org will not list shelters or rescue groups if the organization:
1. Promotes the consumption of farmed animals by serving animal products (meat, dairy, eggs) at its events and functions.
2. Breeds or sells farmed animals.

What to do if Your Cat or Dog is Missing
Contact the Animal Control Department as soon as possible and leave your name, address, home phone number, work phone number, and a description of your animal.
Remember, you are your pet's best friend. Provide identification. If your pet ever does get loose, the license can help ensure a safe return. A cat or dog picked up and placed in the City Animal Control Impound Facility that is not wearing a current license is deemed unowned. An unowned animal or "stray" is held for 72 hours (three days) and is then open for adoption. Note: Over 12 million cats and dogs were turned in to animal shelters last year. Only one in ten found a home. If the animal is not adopted at this time, the animal then undergoes a "painless death" (euthanasia).

Because we do not discriminate against these issues, We are seeing more and more elderly dogs coming into our rescue. While we would love to be able to help each and everyone of them. We cannot, due to lack of adequate funds. An older and / or injured animal can run medical costs of $400.00 plus in a blink of an eye. While we feel each and every life is truly priceless, We do have to take the rescue into consideration as a whole. If you are in a postion to donate, then please consider them as a wonderful cause. If you have an older and or injured animal that you want to surrender to us, please consider donating towards their general care. There are many various ways to donate and the links and the information is provided throughout our site. Click here for free on-line quote! Note: Always check first with a shelter to insure that it is currently " No-Kill ". The status of a given shelter or rescue group is subject to change without notice. Some of these shelters DO practice euthansia when it is medically indicated or they may refer an aggressive animal to animal control. In general, the "No-Kill" philosophy refers to finding an alternative to euthanasia as a means of controlling the pet population for otherwise healthy animals. Please contact TheDogPack@DogPack.com if you have additional information about new shelters or a change in shelter status. General Tips and FAQs
Local shelters provide much more than comfort and care for Maine's unwanted animals. Animal shelters can provide the necessary information pet owners need to help keep pets and their families together. Here are
a few things you can do to help shelters and the animals in their care:
1. Don't purchase your companion from a pet store or breeder. Encourage friends and family to visit a shelter when choosing to become a pet owner. Hundreds of dogs and cats in all shapes and colors are desperately waiting for good, loving homes. Potential owners can get information about which pet is best suited for their family and lifestyle.
2. Be a responsible pet owner. Always keep current identification on your dog or cat. Keep your pets secured and supervised. In addition to food, water, shelter and veterinary care be sure to spend quality time with your pet every day.
3. Don't adopt or acquire a pet for a young child. Many animals arrive in shelters because the children they were intended for lost interest after the pet matured. Teach children how to care for animals by your example. Remember, adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment.
