The Field
Animal Science students study the welfare, breeding, nutrition, physiology, pathology, behavior, management, and production of domestic and laboratory animals. Classes in Animal Science are designed to develop scientific awareness, critical and ethical thinking, laboratory and animal management skills, and verbal and written communication. These attributes are acquired through laboratory and lecture courses, independent studies in nationally and internationally recognized research programs, internships in the Equine and Livestock Studies programs, and participation in student and faculty-run programs at the department's Hadley and Deerfield farm complexes. Extensive facilities provide opportunities for students to work directly with animals in their classes and laboratories.

Since joining the department in 1971, he had taught or advised more than 15,000 undergraduate students. He taught introductory animal science, careers, animal production, agribusiness and equine science courses. "His life was all about caring and service, and his career revolved totally around students to make them the best they could be. He is irreplaceable in the department, and it would take four professors to accomplish his daily routine of activities associated with the care of the Kleberg Center and its students." Dr. Chris Skaggs, professor and one of Hesby's colleagues in the undergraduate student advising section, said, "It is impossible to capture what Dr. Hesby meant to the animal science department, our college and the university. I have never met a person with more genuine care and concern for the individual student." Hesby touched the lives of students through teaching, advising, career preparation and educational field trips, Skaggs said. He used his industry contacts to secure internship and post-graduation job opportunities.

Agricultural and Food Scientists
Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Almost 4 in 10 salaried agricultural and food scientists work for Federal, State, or local governments.
  • A bachelor’s degree in agricultural science is sufficient for some jobs in applied research; a master’s or doctoral degree is required for basic research.
  • Slower-than-average job growth is projected because of limited growth in the Federal Government and modest growth in State and local governments, the largest employers of these scientists.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top The work of agricultural and food scientists plays an important part in maintaining the Nation’s food supply by ensuring agricultural productivity and the safety of the food supply. Agricultural scientists study farm crops and animals, and develop ways of improving their quantity and quality. They look for ways to improve crop yield with less labor, control pests and weeds more safely and effectively, and conserve soil and water. They research methods of converting raw agricultural commodities into attractive and healthy food products for consumers. Agricultural science is closely related to biological science, and agricultural scientists use the principles of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and other sciences to solve problems in agriculture. They often work with biological scientists on basic biological research and on applying to agriculture the advances in knowledge brought about by biotechnology.

Program Information
The department offers graduate programs leading to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in behaviour, genetics, nutrition or physiology of farm animals. Research programs serve the animal industries by the application of basic sciences to current problems in the industry. Advanced training in the Department of Animal Science prepares M.Sc. and Ph.D. graduates for positions in animal industry organizations, government and academic institutions. Graduate programs in the Department of Animal Science may encompass a range of activities, and students should expect to receive experience in laboratory analysis, experimental design and analysis, and work with animals, depending on the research project. Research programs will frequently involve collaborative work with other Departments at the University of Manitoba, or with industry or government partners. The Department also participates in the Inter-departmental Ph.D. program in Food and Nutritional Sciences. There is a strong international orientation to graduate studies in the Department of Animal Science since many of students are from outside Canada. Fields of Research
Researchers in the Department of Animal Science conduct research with farm animals in a variety of subject areas, including behaviour, genetics, nutrition and physiology. Experimental species include cattle (beef and dairy), poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese), sheep, swine, laboratory animals (mice, rats, rabbits, quail) and wildlife animals. Studies may also involve feed and food safety, toxicology or more general fields of livestock and poultry production. This research is supported with funds from a variety of organizations including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), various provincial organizations including Agri-Food Research and Development Initiative (ARDI), as well as industry organizations such as the Canola Council, Manitoba Chicken Producer Board, Manitoba Milk Producers, Manitoba Pork and many others.

What is Animal Science?
Animal Science is concerned with the science and business of producing domestic livestock species, including but not limited to beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, poultry, sheep, and swine. An animal scientist applies principles of the biological, physical, and social sciences to the problems associated with livestock production and management. Animal Science is also concerned with foods of animal origin: meat, dairy foods, and eggs. The food industry is one of the largest and most important industries in the United States. In addition, animal science is concerned with aspects of companion animals, including their nutrition, care, and welfare. If you are interested in efficient production of food animals, processing and consumption of high-quality meats and dairy products, use of companion animals for recreation or leisure purposes, or the maintenance of animal health and well-being, then a career in one of the many animal sciences fields may be your key to a rewarding future. Professional education and training in the animal sciences can prepare you for challenging career opportunities in such areas as animal production, breeding, health maintenance and disease control, marketing, processing, distribution, and numerous allied service industries. Additionally, it is a convenient major for biologists interested in animals and an eventual career after veterinary, medical, dental, or graduate school.
