The Department of Animal Science and the Department of Veterinary Sciences have combined their efforts to offer several degree options leading to the bachelor of science degree in animal and veterinary sciences (ANVS). Courses in animal science, food science and pathobiology are the core offerings in the various options. Agriculture, in its broadest definition, is the nation's largest industry. Livestock production is Wyoming's largest agricultural enterprise. Animal agriculture and its associated industries offer many opportunities for the interested student. Whether a student is interested in production livestock, allied fields such as meat science, business or animal health, or wants to apply to a college of veterinary medicine, the degree tracks offered will form the basis for a challenging career in animal agriculture/biology. Writing across the curriculum: putting theory into practice in animal science courses

Department of Animal Sciences, University of Kentucky, Lexington 40546-0215, USA. Founded on the premise that "learning to write" and "writing to learn" are parallel processes, Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) programs advocate the use of writing activities to enhance learning in subject matter courses across the university curriculum. Application of WAC theory to creating assignments and evaluating writing in undergraduate animal science courses is the primary focus of this paper. Although a variety of writing-to-learn

Why Animal Science? People love animals. Their devotion and companionship grasp our hearts, making animals a popular career choice for many people. But beyond their roles as pets, animals provide us with service, food, clothing, medicines, and valuable scientific information. They play an important role in our economy and in our everyday lives. Because of this role, Animal Science is often the discipline of choice for those with a passion for animals and a desire to understand how they work. Using biology, chemistry and applied sciences, Animal Science focuses on understanding the physiology, behavior, health and management of domesticated animals. Hands-On and By-the-Book
Animal Science offers a unique opportunity to combine classroom lectures and book-learning with hands-on work with animals. Both in the lab and on our farm, students begin working with animals right away. While the first year includes courses in chemistry, math, computers, and English, students also take an introductory animal science course that takes them out of the classroom and into a world of live animals. Freshmen also take a course in anatomy and physiology, which teaches fundamental lab skills through in-depth laboratory exercises. Choosing a Concentration
Because animal science majors have diverse interests, we offer four areas of focus in the major. Each concentration has the same core requirements, including lots of science courses, some math, and elective courses in literature, arts, social sciences, and humanities. Additionally, all concentrations include the Animal Science core, which includes courses in diseases, physiology, nutrition, genetics and production. These core courses are what constitute the General Animal Science concentration, which is the most basic and most flexible of the four options. Students who choose this option tend to have a broad interest in Animal Science and often wish to double major in another program. The other three concentrationsAnimal Biotechnology, Applied Animal Science, and Pre-Veterinary Medicinerequire additional courses specifically related to these areas.

Animal Science Specialization
Animal Science students can choose either the Production or Pre-Veterinary Option . Students enrolled in either curriculum can receive a Bachelor of Science degree. Both options emphasize a practical curriculum made up of courses in agriculture, animal science, communications, and biological and physical sciences. Ani-mal Science courses integrate genetics, health, housing, management, nutrition, physiology, reproduction, and live- stock evaluation. To complement classroom instruction, The College of Agriculture maintains cattle, goats, quail, sheep, swine, and rabbits on the UHH Agriculture Farm Labo- ratory. The animals are used during lab periods to provide hands-on experience for students to help translate classroom instruction into real life situations.
P roduction Option : Students enrolled in this program are preparing for careers related to production, processing or marketing of livestock. Graduates often take positions as managers or herdsmen at farms, ranches and governmental stations. Animal care positions also exist at equestrian centers, hotels, veterinary clinics and zoos. Graduates take positions in meat processing, livestock buying, artifi- cial insemination, laboratory analysis, feed mill manage- ment, and representative of livestock and farm organiza- tions. Other positions include sales of equipment, feed, meat, semen and pharmaceuticals.
