Introduction
Animal Science is a diverse and complex field, covering not only the traditional production and management areas of livestock production, but also the basic sciences such as reproduction, genetics, and nutrition which are crucial to the success of animal production and management. Many students are interested in work beyond their Bachelor or Science degree (i.e., veterinary school, graduate school). Others are interested in production, allied industry, and any of the many support fields which make up animal agriculture. We are confident that our undergraduate program can prepare our students to be competitive in any of those fields.
Career Opportunities
Course Work/Curriculum
As an Animal Science undergraduate major at North Carolina State University, you can earn an Associate or a Bachelor of Science degree. In the four-year baccalaureate program, the science curriculum (SAS) is designed for students with interest in advanced study in disciplines such as physiology, nutrition and genetics. Many students in pre-veterinary medicine (SPV) are enrolled in this curriculum pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. The

26. Animal Science Study Options - Oklahoma State University
In addition to animal science courses in livestock production and management, this option also utilizes a number of supportive courses in forage production,
http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/information/options.htm
ANIMAL SCIENCE STUDY OPTIONS
Undergraduate students majoring in Animal Science may choose one of eleven different options. Within each of these options, students specialize in one or more of the six species groups by choosing appropriate production courses.
The Business option is designed for students interested in modern livestock production, management and business. The current economic climate in agriculture demands that graduates be well-trained in both the business aspects of livestock production and modern livestock management. Students who combine good livestock skills with a sense of business management will be uniquely qualified for management of livestock operations; sales, promotion and management of support industries such as feed, health products or agricultural chemicals; involvement in financial institutions and many other opportunities. The Production option prepares students for intensive livestock management as required by modern poultry, swine and dairy operations. In addition to courses related to the principles of genetic improvement, feeding and reproduction, students learn about pest management, business management and crop production. Consequently, students in the Production option participate in a balanced educational program that prepares them for intensive livestock management. The Ranch Operations option is designed for those with a specific interest in ranching and beef cattle production, particularly cow-calf and stocker operations. In addition to Animal Science courses in livestock production and management, this option also utilizes a number of supportive courses in forage production, including range management. If elective hours are utilized for business courses, this option combines three important aspects of successful ranch operation: livestock management, forage production and business.

Animal Science
Subject Outline
Growing threats to the global environment have resulted in an increasing loss of biodiversity and elevated rates of extinction. Changes in public perceptions and legislation, including a commitment by the EU to halt biodiversity loss by 2010, have led to an increase in the demand for staff with the knowledge and skills to manage the conservation of animal species to reduce and in some cases reverse the decline in biodiversity. The overarching rationale of the animal conservation science courses is to provide animal conservation science industries with a skilled and motivated workforce, capable of carrying out animal conservation in a scientific and professional manner. Graduates would be prepared for careers with government agencies, industry, private consultancies and national and international charities or enter into postgraduate education.
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Teaching is a combination of lectures, tutorials and small group seminars, backed up by appropriate laboratory and field work and work experience. Assessment is undertaken through coursework, which includes reports, case studies essays and presentations, and examinations. A substantial project is undertaken in the final year which allows students to specialise in a topic of their own choice.

Undergraduates at the University of Georgia may direct up to 20 hours of their electives within the animal science program to the areas of business, production, meat science, or science. The business option allows animal science majors to take advanced courses in agriculture economics, computer science, accounting, finance, and other areas pertaining to business. The production option is designed for the student destined for on-the-farm work and management positions and includes advanced courses in management, medical microbiology, agronomy, agricultural economics, and accounting. Opportunities within the meats industry are numerous and this option includes food safety, microbiology, and advanced meat science courses. Students seeking admission to veterinary or graduate schools select the science option which includes microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, zoology, and the advanced animal science courses. Within the business, production, and science options of the Animal Science program, students may concentrate their studies in the horse area. Students selecting the horse emphasis option take Light Horse Evaluation, Horse Production, and either Beef, Swine, or Dairy Production. The Animal Science Department also offers Management of Horses for Pleasure, Advanced Light Horse Evaluation, Operant Conditioning and Training of Horses and an advanced Equine Reproduction course. A description of each course is provided.
