These advances can also benefit work in human health and nutrition and biosecuritythrough a greater understanding of animal health and disease.

National Emphasis Area Overview CSREES funding contributes to the understanding and implementation of the latest advances in animal genetics and reproduction, nutrition, health, and well-being, as well as the business of food animals. This work will ensure a sustainable and healthy animal industry that can provide high-quality protein and other nutrients for human consumption, with minimal impact on the environment. These advances can also benefit work in human health and nutrition and biosecurity through a greater understanding of animal health and disease. Historically, it was easy to see the importance of animals in daily life for transportation, food, and clothing. Today, it may be difficult to see how our lives are still intertwined with animals because many of us rarely, if ever, come in contact with animals, wild or tame. The recent diagnosis in Washington state of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), also known as mad cow disease, and the outbreak of avian influenza in Asia, both tied to devastating human diseases, underscore the critical need for research to understand animals, their diseases, and how we can protect them and ourselves. Terrorism is a threat from which animals are not immune. Highly contagious animal diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, which devastated the European livestock industry a few short years ago, could happen in the United States, either from terrorists bent on harming us or inadvertently through tourism. Developing policies and regulations to prevent such events is matched only by the critical need to develop response plans for use if they occur. CSREES provides leadership in this critical process, as well as funds for research, discovery, and implementation.

DOGS
Pet Vitamin Researcher, Wendell Belfield, DVM, believes a number of pet diseases to be forms of sub clinical scurvy, the Vitamin C deficiency disease. Some of these in DOGS include:
  • Hip dysplasia lameness arthritis spinal myelopathy ruptured disc vital disease and skin problems.
CATS
In CATS, Wendell Belfield, DVM attribute killer viral disease in cluding:
  • Feline leukemia FUS (feline urologic syndrome) Fading kitten deaths Poor coat And general ill health to sub-clinical scurvy due to lack of Vitamin C.
The common wisdom is that humans, other primates, guinea pigs, and a few birds need to get vitamin C in their diets.
Since the rest of the animals produce it within their own bodies, they no doubt make enough, right? Well, maybe not. In this article, a doctor of veterinary medicine looks at the effects of vitamin C supplementation in dogs and its benefit in fighting arthritis, and other ailments. Dogs of all ages suffer with various joint and spinal disorders, including hip dysplasia, osteoarthritis, non-specific arthritis, osteochrondritis, spondylitis and spondylosis.
