Main Page Animal Nutrition Animal Health ForumXTC - Strategic Nutrient Supplementation on Farm The Animal Nutrition and Health Division has launched a new product designed to help broiler producers maximise their profitability. Due to practical constraints in the mill, feed compounders are only able to supply a limited number of rations for broiler growers. The result is that at times broilers are supplied with insufficient amino acids to meet their requirements for optimum growth. (The Nutrient Gap).
Forum XTC is a liquid blend of amino acids and other nutrients, and is strategically applied to the feed, on farm, at a dose rate which ensures that the broilers' nutrient requirements are met on every day of the growth cycle. This is achieved using a unique precision dosing system which has been designed by Forum. For further details of ForumXTC and the Strategic Nutrient Supplementation concept, please contact our offices - details below - or use

Early on in my career as a holistic veterinarian, I had very little to offer my new clients, who came seeking natural solutions for health challenges in their animals. I had no special training in those days. All I knew were drug treatments and surgery, and these animals had often been through one or both without improving their health in any real sense. Their owners were wanting something better. Recommended Resources List. The First Step
I now had something substantial to offer my clients seeking natural care for their animals a raw diet. Often, with only that nutritional change, animals would get better from a variety of complaints, especially skin problems and ear infections that recurred frequently. Watching their response, it became obvious that they had been suffering from malnutrition. They were starving in the midst of plenty. Though these creatures never had days without food, what they were being fed was not meeting their nutritional needs in a fundamental, health building way.

Sodium Nutrition of Livestock and Poultry
by Larry L. Berger, Ph.D.
Professor, Animal Sciences
University of Illinois Animal nutritionists have recognized sodium as an essential nutrient for hundreds of years. Sodium is unique in that animals have a greater appetite for salt than the other nutrients. Even though the body only contains about 0.2% sodium, it is essential for life and is highly regulated. About half of the sodium in the body is in the soft tissues, and half in bone. Sodium makes up 93% of the basic mineral elements in the blood serum and is the chief cation regulating blood pH. Muscle contraction is dependent on proper sodium concentrations. Sodium plays an essential role in nerve impulse transmission and the rhythmic maintenance of heart action. Efficient absorption of amino acids and monosaccharides from the small intestine also requires adequate sodium. Producers of confined livestock and poultry often consider lowering the salt concentration in animal diets to reduce sodium and chloride levels in manure to maximize manure application rates. Owners of grazing livestock, trying to reduce costs, sometimes question the need for salt supplementation. The purpose of this article is to review recent research demonstrating the essentiality of sodium supplementation for optimal performance. In addition, new information on disease or management problems associated with suboptimal sodium nutrition will be discussed. In a recent review, Chiy and Phillips (1995) identified four conditions where sodium deficiency is most likely: 1) Lactating livestock which have high sodium losses in the milk; 2) Rapidly growing livestock and poultry with high sodium retention; 3) Grazing animals under heat stress conditions where forage sodium concentrations are low and there are large losses in sweat; and 4) Animals grazing fertilized pastures where potassium levels are high and sodium is low.

Pet shops commonly carry fish for home aquariums, small birds such as parakeets, small mammals such as fancy rats and hamsters, and small reptiles such as lizards and snakes. Mice, small goldfish, and other animals that serve to be live food (called feeders) for reptiles and fish are also usually sold. Puppies and kittens
Less common in pet stores are larger mammals such as dogs and cats. In part, these animals have become less popular in stores because pet stores have received considerable bad press for their inappropriate care of puppies and kittens, which need socialization and are vulnerable to illnesses, and for their purchasing the animals from puppy mills. Most shops that carry puppies and kittens charge inflated prices for them, far above the common rate for the same animal from a breeder.
As a result, it is usually easier and cheaper to acquire puppies and kittens from animal shelters, private breeders, or rescue groups than from pet stores. Exotic pets
Exotic pets like sugar gliders and large parrots are available at some pet shops. Because the care of these types of animals is difficult and expensive, usually only stores that specialize in exotic animals carry them as regular stock.

A newly revised comprehensive book on cat and dog nutrition contains more than just a cosmetic makeover. It looks at current nutritional fads and fallacies, and provides a road map for choosing food. It also considers the nutrient needs of neonatal puppies and kittens and such issues as diet and dental health and nutritional needs of pets with cancer. "Living with companion animals has become a national pastime, and taking care of dogs and cats is of great interest and concern to the many pet owners and professionals who work with these animals," said co-author Linda P. Case. "Along with proper health and medical attention, nutrition is an important component in the care of all dogs and pets." The second edition of "Canine and Feline Nutrition: A Resource for Companion Animal Professionals" was published in August by Mosby, a Harcourt Health Sciences company. The 592-page book was co-written with Daniel P. Carey and Leighann Daristotle, who are veterinarians for the Iams Co., and Diane A. Hirakawa, vice president for Iams research and development.
