41. PROVET HEALTHCARE INFORMATION - Lutein
ProVet healtcare information article on lutein in companion animal nutrition.
http://www.provet.co.uk/health/diseases/lutein.htm
Back LUTEIN IN COMPANION ANIMAL NUTRITION First broadcast on www.provet.co.uk This information is provided by Provet for educational purposes only. You should seek the advice of your veterinarian if your pet is ill as only he or she can correctly advise on the diagnosis and recommend the treatment that is most appropriate for your pet. What is lutein ? Lutein (also known as xanthophyll) is one of a large group of over 600 compounds known as the carotenoid pigments.. These pigments give yellow, green or orange colouration to vegetables and fruits and they are precursors for Vitamin A. Lutein is naturally found in several plants including some flowers (eg marigolds), red peppers, kale, mustard and spinach. It is also found in egg yolk. In the eye lutein is found in the macula which lies in front of the cones in the retina, where it is believed to act as a yellow filter. Dietary lutein is thought to be an essential micronutrient for normal vision, and being fat-soluble deficiency may occur if fat digestion and absorption is impaired. Lutein supplementation may be beneficial in the management of macular degeneration which leads to a loss of central vision and colour vision. info@provet.co.uk

"A growing number of vets are stating that processed pet food is the main cause of illness and premature death in the modern dog and cat. In December 1995, the British Journal of Small Animal Practice published a paper contending that processed pet food suppresses the immune system and leads to liver, kidney, heart and other diseases. This research, initially conducted by Dr Tom Lonsdale, was researched further by the Australian Veterinary Association and proven to be correct." Canine Health Concern Dr. Kollath, of the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, headed a study done on animals. When young animals were fed cooked and processed foods they initially appeared to be healthy. However, as the animals reached adulthood, they began to age more quickly than normal and also developed chronic degenerative disease symptoms. A control group of animals raised on raw foods aged less quickly and were free of degenerative disease. In nature, we see another example of wild animals eating entirely enzyme rich raw foods being free of the degenerative diseases that afflict humans. Welcome to...

49. Canine Nutrition
Advice from a veterinarian.
http://www.bestfriends.org/members/health/dognutr.htm
Practical Canine Nutrition By Margaret Muns DVM Choosing the correct dog food can be very difficult. There is a huge variety of choices available, all with different nutritional claims. The manufacturing of pet foods is a huge and growing industry in the United States. Each pet food company and dog expert seems to have a different opinion about what the best food is for your dog. To make informed choices, dog owners and veterinarians need to wade through all of the pet food marketing information, but must rely on the science of pet nutrition. Pet Food Marketing All commercial dog foods are sold as having complete and balanced nutritional value. However, all of the commercial dog foods contain more fat and protein than is required. Pet food companies know that it is very easy to market and sell high protein, high fat foods. They know they must convince owners that a certain food is better than all the others, so they stress factors such as palatability, acceptability, cost, digestibility, and suitability. Dog owners have been conditioned to believe that high protein levels are necessary for maximum health. High fat and high protein foods lead to increased consumption by dogs and increased sales for a company, but also lead to a greatly increased risk of obesity for dogs. In fact, over nutrition and obesity have become the most common of nutritional disorders in dogs.

Is Your Pet Deficient In A Key Nutrient?
Richard J. Holliday, DVM - " Good nutrition can prevent disease. Good nutrition can cure disease." A groundswell of nutrition conscious veterinarians are beginning to recommend to their clients that they supplement their animals diet with a daily dose of flaxseed oil and other nutrients for optimum health and vitality. The food your animal eats should provide all of the nutritional components which are necessary for all organs and systems of a healthy body to perform in harmonious unison. A properly functioning body does an amazing job at preventing disease and healing itself, and to do this it requires the energies and nutrients of a well-balanced diet. In terms of finding the proper diet for our companions, this means learning to look beyond our own needs, opinions, and agendas to address the natural needs of the animals that we caretake. NUTRICEUTICALS CREATE A NEW ERA IN ANIMAL HEALTH AND NUTRITION
by: Stephen B. Blezinger

Ph.D, PAS
For years we have known that health and nutrition are “joined at the hip.” The presence of adequate or inadequate levels of any of the nutrients can have serious effects on the overall health of the cow or calf. Similarly health conditions such as disease can likewise affect nutrition, especially the animal's ability to absorb and/or metabolize many of the nutrients. In recent years, research and practice has emphasized the effect of numerous nutritionally based compounds to enhance health in cattle on a number of levels. A new term, “nutriceutical,” has been coined to describe any number of assorted nutrients, compounds and products which can stimulate immune response in the animal or seem to have a sort of therapeutic effect. A number of issues have come into play in recent years which have stimulated research in this area and overall interest in nutritionally-based compounds for use in health related applications. A field once the responsibility of veterinarians may be opening up to require the input of nutritionists, microbiologists and others as the animal health industry learns more about the affects that nutrition plays in health maintenance and the stimulation of immunity. Let's take a look at some of the implications of this trend and where potential advantages could lie for the cattleman.
