    INTRODUCTION
Background: Colonized by English settlers from Saint Kitts in 1650, Anguilla was administered by Great Britain until the early 19th century, when the island - against the wishes of the inhabitants - was incorporated into a single British dependency along with Saint Kitts and Nevis. Several attempts at separation failed. In 1971, two years after a revolt, Anguilla was finally allowed to secede; this arrangement was formally recognized in 1980 with Anguilla becoming a separate British dependency. TOP OF PAGE

    Picnic at Prickly Pear
A day at Prickly Pear, a short boat ride away from Sandy Ground pier is the perfect spot for a beach outing with a touch of adventure. We packed some pelau (a one-pot dish made of chicken, rice and peas and various seasonings), a cooler of drinks and some snacks, and we were off on "Gotcha". Garfield, the boat captain, made his way across the waters in about fifteen minutes. There are two restaurants on the island, one run by Johnno's and the other by Zara's. They were closed the day of our visit, but we were grateful for their shade, tables and chairs, where we spread our picnic. The beach is gorgeous and the wildlife there seems to be flourishing. The kids had fun coaxing over a dozen bright finches and canaries to feed from their hands and looking for lizards. The coconut trees are quite robust and the natural vegetation is doing well. Various charter boats including Gotcha can arrange to carry you to Prickly Pear. The return boat trip cost us US$40 per person for our group.

    Anguillians Attend Remembrance Service
www.news.ai Site Map Click to enlarge pictures To: Daily Herald From: Brenda Carty Date: September 24, 2001 Anguillians attend remembrance service ANGUILLA-A large cross-section of the community was in attendance at the Service of Remembrance held on Monday evening, September 17 at the St Mary's Anglican Church. It was organized by the Government of Anguilla, the Anguilla Christian Council and the Anguilla Evangelical Association. Governor Peter Johnstone described the events in America as a horror movie that no one could believe but that gradually sank in as reality that had caused immense destruction and loss of life on a country that prides itself on homespun democracy. He described the enormous sadness, sympathy and effort to be with the people who have suffered, and the bravery that has followed. He suggested that Anguillians will need to be sensitive to visitors' feelings as so many of the tourists visiting the island are from the Eastern seaboard. He ended his talk with the words, "God bless America." The Chief Minister, Osbourne Fleming described the outpouring of love and togetherness that has resulted from the tragic events, noting that this is a lesson for everyone and we all need this outpouring of love. He described how the USA has touched the lives of everyone in some way or another and he thanks the US for all they have done and wants them to know that we are concerned. The repercussions on tourism and the economy were also included in the Chief Minister's brief talk. "When I look at what happened we are nothing," he said, "it behoves us to live as if each day is our last."

"Favorite Anguilla beaches?" That's a question we were asked a lot. You see, we had visited all 33 Anguilla beaches during the 30 days we were first here (since then, we've been frequent visitors).
It's amazing that such a teeny speck of a Caribbean island in the BWI (British West Indies), a mere 35 square miles, could have so much sand!. And I don't just mean that we saw the 33 Anguilla beaches. We walked them. We swam, snorkeled, and snoozed on them. Of course, we photographed every one of those spectacular Anguilla beaches... We fell in love with them, with the people, with this entire perfect little island. We watched terrific boat races (Anguilla's national sport, and August is the biggest month for boatracing). We ate at some wonderful restaurants on Anguilla beaches. And we slept every night in a serene, comfortable villa on a very secluded beach... Barnes Bay. (Even many lifelong Anguillians weren't sure where Barnes Bay was, so on an island that's considered secluded, that's really secluded!)

Anguilla has no golf courses as of yet. The Anguilla government, however, has reached an agreement providing for the construction of a $250 million golfing facility on the island with a scheduled completion of sometime in ‘2005. The Anguilla government undertook the project beginning in late 2002 and when finished the development will offer a world-class 18-hole championship course for Anguilla golf as well as a state of the art clubhouse and spa. There is great excitement from the Anguilla government over the completed courses projected contribution to the tourist industry. Anguilla-goers prepare for world class accomodations thanks to the Anguilla government's work. While the Anguilla government project finishes, there is a Pitch and Putt Course in Sandy Ground on Well Road (a nine-hole course) and there is access to St. Martin via the local ferry (a 40-minute journey to golf in St. Martin)

The Dutch built a small fort on Anguilla in 1631. Then, in the mid-17th Century, English settlers arrived and colonized the island.
Anguilla is known as a quiet, peaceful island, with miles and miles of white sand beaches, all ringed by crystal clear waters.
Tourism is the major industry, and visitors ( many coming to scuba dive ), arrive by air, while some take one of the convenient ferries linking Anguilla with Marigot, St. Martin.
Anguilla is mostly flat land, with the highest point only 213 ft. above sea level. There are no rivers or streams, and the average high temperature is near 80º.

Coccoloba Resort, at Barnes Bay in the western area of Anguilla, which changed ownership at various times since its inception in the mid-1980s, is to be demolished following its purchase from the Montreaux Group. In its place, and on additional land to the west and east of the existing property, will be erected a new project whose developers are the KOR Hotel Group of Los Angeles, California. The project is estimated at a minimum cost of 120 million US dollars including the price of the extra land.
“The benefits from it are colossal and we hope that the developers would recognise that we are partners in this project together,” Chief Minister and Minister of Tourism, Osbourne Fleming, said in announcing the new tourism development on October 21.
Chief Operating Officer with the KOR Reality Group, Jeffrey Smith, said the developers were very excited to bring their brand of hotel development to Anguilla. He stated that from their first visit, four years ago, they had recognised the natural beauty of the island, its beaches, waters and the friendliness of the people. “KOR looks forward to working hand in hand with the Government to create a first class destination resort,” he told the gathering, which included Ministers and other officials of Government, John Benjamin and Dennis Sheehan from Caribbean Juris Chambers and the media.
The KOR Group has holdings of about 3,000 residential units, eight hotels and six other residential properties in the United States currently in various phases of development. The Group is working on two prospective resort projects in Mexico and has been in real estate development business for over fifteen years. Mr. Smith said his Group had a successful track record of delivering hotels and residential resort projects.
