Information for: Information on: Integrated Marine Resource Management and Coastal Tourism - Anguilla Summer Semester (US) May 11 - June 1, 2003 Summer 2004 not running College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Department of Park, Recreation and Tourism Resources Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Arranged through the Office of Study Abroad (OSA) What's this program about? This three-week field school is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide students from multiple disciplines (e.g., park, recreation and tourism resources; fisheries and wildlife; marine biology; anthropology; resource development; geology; geography; business/hospitality services; or other relevant fields) with marketable skills critical to conducting integrated marine resource management that addresses social, economic, and cultural dimensions. Students will explore the reefs, shipwrecks and fish of Anguillan waters to integrate research, planning, development and management of marine resources of this small island nation. They will interact with the local people; tour the island's cultural resources; assess the health of coral reefs and fish populations; learn to document and photograph shipwrecks; meet with tourism professionals; and develop plans for a marine park, tourism opportunities and interpretive materials. Applying knowledge and skills from these experiences, students will be involved in projects that contribute directly to Anguilla's efforts to monitor resource health and address management challenges related to multiple use. Also, students will be involved in a community service project. | |
